Hello Sunsetters! I have been researching my uncle for 2 years. His name was 1st Lt. James A. Hungerpiller and he flew with the 71st Bomb Squadron. His B-25 was shot down over Simpson Harbor on 2Nov43. He and his crew were killed in the action and not recovered. I've been quite successful in finding information about him from local newspaper archives and some info my grandfather had. This site is great and the pictures are wonderful. I've also been reading the 475th FG website which flew cover for the raid (http://www.475thfghf.org/). Please feel free to email me or post with any info or stories about him or his crew. I am really interested if any members remember Jim or the Rabaul raid in November 43. Thanks Chris for this venue!

Danny,
Doug Thropp was flying with Thomas McGuire the day he went down. They were both members of the 475th FG. Mr Thropp lives just down the road from me and will be riding with me in about another hour to hear Gen. Paul Tibbets (Enola Gay) give a speech at the aviation museum. I'll ask him about that raid to see if he flew on it.

Chris,
My mother found an old picture of Jim and I would like to forward the scanned image to you to have you post it on the website. Maybe it will bring in some information for me. Let me know where to send it. Thanks, Danny

Danny,

My father was with the 71st Squadron of the 38th and participated in the raid. I have a copy of the book issued by Headquarters, Army Air Forces prepared as a tribute to the men. If you don't already have one and would like a copy, I would be happy to scan it and make it available to you.

My uncle was with Lt. J. Hungerpiller in "Sleepy-Time Gal" when it was shot down in Simpson Harbor. I am interested in getting any documentation possible. I do have some newspaper clippings about the raid on Rabaul.

Danny and Darryl,

I returned from the 38th BG 2004 reunion in St. Louis last night. The best news is that the Association will not be disbanding. We have scheduled our next reunion to be held in Phoenix in 2006, probably in mid-October.

At the reunion, I was made aware of a large file of information about the 38th that will become available to me in the near future. When I receive that CD, I will search for further information for you and get in touch.

I would appreciate receiving an e-mail from you so that I may contact you more directly.

I will be the new editor for our Association news letter. We may be able to make this available to you electronically. When we get that set up, I will let you know if you have contacted me by e-mail.

David Gunn
