Greetings!!
Does anyone know the "official" status of this book?? It truely is becoming a saga.....
Last time I talked to the publishers (several months ago) they refused to talk about it, but I had heard that Larry had definately promised a completion by this year's reunion.
Anyone know anything??
Thanks,
Reagan Page (son of William Page)

I served with your Dad in WW11 in the Phillipines and Okinawa. We are no closer to receiving our Book than we were two years ago. Having said that there is one positive thing that has happened since the reunion of 2002. Al Kennedy of the 71st and I sat down in Colorado Springs with Hickey and talked him out of his stash of 6 large filing boxs containing the photos, stories, diarys and the data he had from Maxwell Field. Al Kennedy who is a publisher in his own right ( tests etc.)took them home and using his staff has digitised the contents of the 6 filing boxs. He has 5,500 photos on 12 CDs and 2,250 pages of text on another CD. The data and photos are arranged in a chronological order and may be accessed by either the date or by name. We are hoping that all members of the 38th BOMB GROUP ASSOC.WW2 will each receive a copy of the disks when they have been completed. We hope that there will be enough information on the disks for a compitent writer to produce a history even if it is not in our life time. Say hello to your Dad when you see him. I hope this answers your question. Sincerely,Orland Gage 823rd SQ.

I would like very much to find out how to get in touch with Al Kennedy and find out how to get a copy of the CD's with the history to the 38th on them. I am trying to put together the history of my father, Barney Johnson who flew with the 38th Bomb Group from August 1942 through December 1943. Can you help me?
Sincerely,
Wayne

The CDs that Al Kennedy has are incomplete at this point. Preliminary copies have been made for a committee of 38th BG Association officers to review pending being able to incorporate the balance of the information we have received from Larry Hickey.
I just sent you a message with respect to your response on another 38th BG.
As I said, get in touch with me.

The latest information on THE BOOK is that Hickey has assigned a new man to be VP of publications and this man has responded to our President in the last couple of weeks. He has assured us that he is now in control, has assigned two writers to complete the book, has provided us with a status chart and has promised to give us an update every two weeks.
He says he understands our past treatment and considers it totally unsatisfactory. He has "promised" to do everything possible to have our book finished and ready for delivery by our reunion date, Sept. 28-30, 2006.
Since this a recent action, I, personally, am not holding my breath and am witholding further judgement either way until I see the reports over the next 60 days. I am somewhat skeptical, having seen the status chart but I have to give the gentleman credit for his forthrightness and candor. It appears that the arrangement is such that Hickey cannot do to much damage unless he kicks this man across the state line. The above reflects the status our President has given me to put in the May issue of our newsletter which will be distributed within the next three weeks if I hold up my end of the job.
Anyone can get updates by keeping in touch with me.

We have just been advised in the last few days that a new man on he scene has assumed the position of VP for publications and is responsible for finishing our book as well as that of the 22nd Bomb Group and the 43rd Bomb Group. The 22nd BG book is said to be ready for printing within the next three weeks. The 38th BG book is said to be on schedule for printing before the end of the year. Two writers are said to have been assigned to work on the book full time.
Having seen the status of work finished and yet to be finished, it seems to me to be hopeful thinking at best. We should have more information within the month.
Please get in touch with me directly if you wish to keep up to date on this subject.

I am the niece of Harold P Tiddens, and have been trying for years to get copies of the book for my Dad, Roger, and my son. What a legacy to pass on, if the story is ever told........

Why isn't your Dad a member of the 38th BG Association. We have a few hundred men who were members of the 38th BG during WW II. We will be having our reunion in Mesa, Ariz. September 28-30 and would like to see him there. You are welcome, also. If you want the information, get in touch with me directly. I do not have anything more recent than the posting on this site as to the status of the book.

Dear Sir:
I am one of the writers currently working on your book.
I was recruited specifically to make sure that the job
gets done and done right. I can't speak for what has transpired
before I came on board, but my co-writer and I have been going
at it non-stop since September 2005. The research material and
photographs are fantastic and have been providing an incredible
foundation for the telling of your group's story. I have strong
feelings about this project and have personally relinquished much
in order to see this work to its completeion, however I feel that it
is worth the cost. A tentative manuscript will be presented at
the reunion in September, but my team and I will continue working
on the final draft until the last possible moment. There are so many
compelling tales and courageous actions, that we are just trying
to do justice to the events in which your unit played a part. I am
grateful to have been able to take part in telling your story and I
am sure that everyone will be extremely happy with the finished product.
I wish that this book could have been produced many years ago, and
although I had no control over that, I can control what happens now.
Your members will surely see this book in print very soon, on that
you have my word. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to
contact me at ussbowfin@yahoo.com
Sincerely,
Stuart

I am the other writer working on your project, and am responsible for covering the initiation of the Group through the end of 1943. Any questions you may have regarding that time period I am more than happy to answer to the best of my ability. Stuart (the other author) is responsible for the years 1944 and 1945, and as he has mentioned, he too welcomes any questions/concerns.
Here is some basic background regarding Stuart and I and "Saga of the Sun Setters." I hope it clarifies some questions/concerns you may have.
I began working on the project in June, 2005. This is before our current VP was with the company. Thus, the responses on this forum which state that Stuart and I were assigned when our VP took the position are untrue. We have been working on the project longer than that suggests, which hopefully allays some of your concern regarding the recent timeframe of the project.
Allow me now to clarify that the book WILL NOT be complete by the reunion, but the majority of the mauscript will be. On a final note, I wish to confirm what Stuart has said in that both of us are working very hard to get the project done. Again, both of us are happy to address any questions you have about the project or anything related to the 38th BG. I can be reached via email at: mark.janko@colorado.edu.
-Respectfully,
Mark M. Janko
