I agree, it was given to them to ensure his kid's future. However, I believe the money came from the news agency she (Winslet) worked for which was supposed to go to Gale (and/or his Lawyer)for granting them the story. His lawyer was in on it the whole time and was instructed by Gale to ensure the money was forwarded to his kid.
