      He put the postcard in there because it was an apology by Berlin that Gale did not rape her.

      Gale wanted to include it so that his wife and son would know that he was innocent, (He says near the beginning that he doesn't want his son to remember him as a rapist and murderer) and to further his cause that an innocent man was executed.
