SCANNING, SKIMMING
To find a friend's name in the phone book or lo review your history lesson, you should use two different kinds of reading. This lesson will help you know what kind of reading is best for getting the information you need.
You probably don't realize it, but you read different kinds of material in different ways. Have you ever looked at a TV listing to see if there is a show you might like to watch? The first thing you probably did was scan to find the time period you had in mind. Then you may have scanned the names of the shows that were on at that time. Finally, you skimmed the description of each show to see if it was something you might like to watch.
SCANNING
Scanning is a way of quickly finding facts from something that is printed. When you scan, you move your eyes over the words without stopping. You look for a special word or fact. Usually, you know what word or fact you are looking for before you begin. Let's say you want to go to a movie called Space Adventures. You would locate the movie section of your newspaper. Next you would quickly look over the words on the page until you found the words Space Adventures. Then you would read more slowly to find out where it was showing and at what time.
Sometimes you may need to find a special word or fact in a story, book, or article. You can scan a paragraph just as you scan a list. When you scan a paragraph, you do not read every word. Since scanning is used to find a name, date, number, or another special fact, you will quickly move your eyes over the words until you find that special fact.
