skyscrapers: giants of te city

People call it "Big John": The John Hancock Center in Chicago, U.S.A. It´s only one of the world´s tallest building and it keeps Charlie Lomas busy. Here he works about 320 meters above Chicago. you can see him repairing a cable on a television antenna. Lomas is one of millions of people who go up in the world every day. They live or work in towering buildings called skyscrapers.
In ancient times, tall structures made of stone or brick honored gods and kings, but they never rose much more than 45 meters.
About a hundred years ago, builders learnt to use steel skeletons, which supported the weight of tall stone buildings and Elisha Otis invented an elevator with automatic brakes.
Today, skyscrapers continue to challenge the people who desig and build them;for example, engineers are designing windows that resit strong winds and structure that can survive earthquakes.
Many experts say that life in a skyscraper will get better-and safer- year by year.
in thefuture, more and more people will live and work in high buildings like these.
