Yes, I too felt sorry for him. We were supposed to feel sorry for him. It was a perfect rendition of something that could happen to any of us. I think we all put ourselves into that same situation and wonder how we would react if our parents suddenly died when we were that age. I think a great scene was the one when his food supply had run out and he finally found the house empty. He immediately went to the refrigerator and starting devouring food.
I believe the whole subplot of his drawings of Atranta was a great way to provide a sympathetic feeling from the audience.
