I'm young and going for the spikey look. I have good side and back. I'm have no balding area or recessiong and thinning everywhere on top. I been using propecia for a while but my hair still thinning out at a slow rate. I does not regrow hair for me just slow it down. I feel that if i ever stop taking propecia, that i would lose my good density on the side & back. So i will continue to use it while wearing my piece.
I don't want the balding looking in the crown or hairline with hair products. Atleast not yet.. .. So i order around 71-70% density, but density photos been looking thick lately. ESniper do you still wear your hair in high density. I know at what time you needed 73% for the short spikey look. Are you currently working with 70% density now. What specs do you wear now, how long, what style? Do you have any recent pics your could post style with products and without products. Maybe jsut a glimpse. It seems like Colins and Jake, all drop down in density now. Seen some old post before pics from before and density look thinner and seen some of the most recent and the density got thicker. Not sure if they were gel, wetted, or dry, which could make the difference in the photos.
Anybody else can jump in for advise or photos for the spikey-look.
Mine are still pretty much the same. As BA says, density aint no science. And I think there may be a difference in the old factory and new one. Before, my max was 70 and I might have a 75 front, that was the beginning, as I tweaked my systems, I have found that 68 or so, which is still pretty much 70, works well for laces, or knots.
You have to know or remember that, densities for a knotted piece, ie laces, are not teh same as for skin pieces, injected. The knots make for a thicker feeling piece, whereas injections lies a little better. So when you drop the density on a lace, even a few percetages, you can maintain the look with the hair being more manageable and having a more realistic feel to it because they are not so close together on a knotted piece.
Does this make sense?
Also, here is the link for the slideshow I put together that has over 60 pics of my pieces, you may or may not have seen,
Some have product some dont, different bases, I think youll like the ones towards the end.
For some reason I want to sing "through the years" by kenny rogers when I look at this...lol

I know you do ES , just wanted to give him some pics he may have missed and a frame of reference.
Those last ones are the 68% all french/64 bases...btw Freestyle - I ordered #2 and colored it and my own hair with wella to match...in the event the question comes up, thats why the a couple of the precut longer pieces appear lighter, same piece just not colored yet.
If 68% is the magic number for the short hair style, i'll just stick around this number and maneuver from there. So i guess i'm safe. i be able to tweet it if needed and drop down when i start thinning out somemore.
As a side note on Density, i just recieved to what i think is a 60% density. I'm quite impressed w/ it, but i should note its an all sfs though and scalp looks good through it.. My only experience is w/ 65% Density. 65 worked for me o.k., but looked its best w/ the wet look because it toned the density and the "poofyness" ( as we americans say ). Looking at the average man though, say between 35-60 yrs. old, that 60 density , would work for quite a number of them, not all them of course, but a good many, especially 60-65% imho . Im anxious to attach and see how this 60 looks on. Good Luck w/ your Spikey, Ace Hair!

I will be reducing my density to probably 55% the next order to equal everything out.
Actually, I forgot it...After a couple weeks, the piece starts "mellowing out".
The piece in the pic is only two day's old.
My last one was about 3 months old and looked like crap when in was off my head but was perfect on. It was 65% when new so I figure it might be about 55% now...that's how I'm figuring it.
The best piece might be a half-way worn out one .
Cant win for loosin'
For what it's worth.

Not really what i had in mine, but the pic help. Its more of the messy spikes. I thinking more of like the pull-back spikey pourcipine look. Not sure this is doable, haven't seen it done yet. But low density seems really natural and undectable. I may go this route soon and start going lower on my density. I guess i went high because i miss my hair, miss styling it and good side/ back for the moment. It better now then later. I may end up going through this route, and start slowly lowering my dense with time. What hair product(Gel, promade, wax, putty, mud, etc.) is better in making high density less and firm if my density is too high to match my back/side?
OK so my effort on my slideshow which includes EXACTLY what you are referring to went all for not. Watch the entire thing ACE. I even mentioned that towards the end are some pics you may wish to see, I posted this to answer on differeing bases, gels pomades waxes, some with, some without, its all in that slideshow bro.
There isnt a style I really have shown in my pics, it may not look exactly is some pics, just how different people style, even my long uncut pieces show longer style potentials.

Jake you been very informative in helping me and others throughout the forums. So im thankful. Really i just others to join these post and give there experience instead of being spectators. Reading one experience can only give one guidance.
I understand that, you stated that you did not see any pics of the look, and I gave them to you. Honestly, most will not post pictures, they do not feel comfortable, and as I can be seen as one of the foremost experts on this sort of style and you mentioned myself and why I have gone lower, I explained it, and that you can get what you need. Many who read may see my response, have no other comment to make or just do not prefer to comment.
But my comment after the fact was more for the pics as you say you havent seen any of the porcupine, spikey, messy, and there are some in that slideshow was all.
Honestly you will end up getting more of a concurrence with my responses than not, particularly due to your age, style you wish to achieve and such, but I always ALWAYS, encourage others to respond and have that person make their own decisions. If they err for some reason, my email is always open to help if needed.
Thats all I meant, styles are easy they dont effect the look of a "wig" so to speak, and I show they all can be accomplished, as have others. The real issues are what base works with these styles, making sure it matches your exisitng hair or you can color it to match, in addition to the right density. These style can be achieved with lower densities with more scalp showing and even more when wet or with product, just depends on the look you want.
For example, a skin piece may not be best suited for a newbie DIYer for shorter styles particularly as you go down in density. But with what you want and your goals, you seem to have it well in hand.
That was from several years ago. The specs were=
Color 1B
Density 63% with 35% grey
All Swiss lace (at the time, there was no SFS lace, just regular old Swiss)
Style= flatback
Wave/curl- bodywave.
That was my first ever Swiss lace piece. I wore it for 9 weeks. The lace was just a little frayed. I was still useable, but I like to keep new ones around an experiment alot so I took it off after that time and sent it in to be studied.
Jake you should use a different slide show. There are ones where u can stop or fast forward, or just select the pic u want to see. I think it would be a better idea, i wish i could go back to some photos.
Btw there is this picture on there, that u have lil boxes and captions, I think explaining what you did to cut it in, Would u mind showing me that pic?
