Steve,

How did you cut the hair at the very front where it spikes up ? Is the front couple of inches cut the same length ?
Did you use robocut ?

Thanks

Alicia in Anahiem cuts the piece in for Steve.

Stay tuned to the forum, Steve is getting a piece made from the very thin skin material with the 10 day ordering and he his going to try to pull off something special in regards to a hairpiece. He his also going to get one of Jills custom fronts so photos will follow in the next couple of weeks.

Regards BA.

Very nice cut in. I wonder how short his hair is on the top thats blending into his sides. Granted he has a lot of side hair to work with

That is an excellent job! Can you tell me if that is a standard contour front or if you design your own.

Re: Steve L - Great Photos of Short Style

Hey everyone,

To NYwig.. yes it's the faux mohawk lol. I have been trying to get that style for the longest time and its about70% to how I am trying to get it.

Someone mentioned about my sides being good. My sides have actually thinned out a lot and I sometimes use DermMatch. In these photos I am not wearing the DermMatch. The sides are okay for now but they are slowly thinning.

I have lowered the density to about 60% on my pieces whereas I used to be 75% when I first started ordering from toplace 4 years ago. I always order on the low side because if I need more hair added it is so much easier to add hair than it is to remove it.

I also have created a widows peak since I have gone so short . With a very short haircut I can not have a straight across or even slightly curved hairline because my side temple hair does not come out far enough.
With the "curtains style" I used to wear I wouldnt have to worry about a straight across hairline because my temple points were covered.

For me like I have said many times is that I have to match up the density absolutely perfect to my own hair for the short style to work.

The piece picture here is all SFS about 60% density.. It's over a year and half old

Steve

Steve,
Super job and a good choice on the density.
Could actually go another 5% less I bet and it would still look super.
Great idea with the widows peak.
I don't like the straight across hairline myself and yours looks great.
Good job.

Great work Steve!

It looks really good! Inspires me to try it! And your advice on dropping density to match is very helpful! And posting pictures is the best help you can give too!

Thankyou!

James

well it looks great. yeah your side hair still looks nice. What i really mean is how high up it goes. Actually your system is blended so good i really cant tell where the system starts and whats ur real hair. Im assuming your hair system is real small/narrow and most of it is ur real hair?

Wow, that looks amazing!

Can I achieve something like this, bearing in mind I have no side hair but good back hair?

Xeon... There is a picture on the front of the Toplace page with me holding up a piece, and a pic of me with my head shaved so you can get an idea of how big my piece is and how much shaved area there is.
I do still have a decent amount of sides in terms of area I guess but it's thinning.

2baldlygo... If you have next to no side hair but a lot of hair in the back I am not sure exactly how you would go that short other than using a product like DermMatch on your sides to fill in your thin side hair. DermMatch does work but there is a lot of work putting it on and off daily.
Ba has gone the route of permanent tattoo color on his sides but that isn't for everyone.
I am not sure how short full caps can go but that might be an option.

Steve, do you have a contour that you designed for the front? I would love to see the shape of your front hairline. I am trying to figure the best way to re-shape mine as to have that widows peak. thanks.

Re: Steve L - Great Photos of Short Style

January 11 2008, 10:15 PM

Rod,

I had Alicia do a template (the plastic covering my head) and then I just sort of drew a line on the plastic as to how I wanted the front to look.
I sent BA a new template for my new pieces and I might have even put a bit more recession in it. BA would have my template which would show the contour.

I am trying to keep a youthful look like with the faux mowhawk or the spikey front but also trying to stay age appropriate with some recession and a better balance between my temple points and my forehead.

Steve L

These photos are a real inspiration.

I have wanted to go with the short style, but I just didn’t think that it was achievable.

Awesome effort – Something that I will try to achieve. Until now, I didn’t think that it was possible to get rid of the “curtains”

Thanks Mate.
Craig.

Great job Steve....you've been a legend on here since the beginning. They even named your first style the "SteveL"! Are you liking the styling ease of a short cut much better than your previous longer style?

LOL @ the legend comment. That title should go to MB. He had some awesome pictures as well as his great video.
I think we along with many others have just worn for awhile and have gotten down our densities, color, style, template etc which gives some good results..along with great toplaces pieces of course.

I really do like the short style.. the curtains style was easier for quick styles without regards to the temples. With the short style I have to have my density perfect with my sides which is much trickier when ordering but once I get that spot on then I really love the look and feel of wearing super short.
It's also not a traditional hairpiece style which I like.

My wife definitely likes the short style better too so I do plan to keep it for as long as I can while my sides hold up.

Steve

Looks awesome. Did you say you use concealers on the sides? If yes, which ones?

I sometimes use concealers..usually when my side hair gets too gray. In these pictures I am not using any concealers. My sides are still decent as of now but I have noticed a thinning the last 5-7 years or so.
I recommend Dermatch.. that stuff seems to really work well.

Excellent photos Steve! You are one of the people who inspired me to wear hair initially

Do you mind me asking, how old are you? I'm 27 and my sides are very similar to yours in terms of density (based on looking at the pics). I'm just wondering do they get worse over time?

I know people who have been getting thinner and balder on top all through their lives, but the sides get to a certain point, and then seem to stop thinning / receding.

My Dad is 66 and still has decent sides. But his top hair is totally gone now!

Re: Steve L - Great Photos of Short Style

Hey Colin,

I do believe my sides have "thinned" over the last several years. My dad too has very decent sides at age 69..in fact he has probably 60% of his hair on top of his head too. I hope I keep my sides like my father. My mom's father went bald early so it's possible I have inherited some of his baldness pattern although I do see a lot of similarities of my thinning/balding and my fathers.

I am 41 but because of the hair people think I am in my 30's.
I am on blood pressure meds and one side effect is thinning hair so that may play a role in the thinning but its hard to know for sure

Because I am getting really gray..like my dad did ...I think gray sides can make it look thinner so when I color my sides back to dark brown they look thicker.

Anyway I am just hoping to hang on to the sides. If it were to get severely bad to where I didn't think I could match up anymore I am not sure I would go the full cap route.. in that case it would be possible that I would shave it.

Hey SteveL what the exact density of that. Any graduation or staggering? Is it all 60%.

Did you somehow did anything to your template? Rebuilt Recession or make your template bigger in the side & back area. Asking because you went with a shorter style then what you had before in toplace frontpage.

I like shorter style but it more unforgiving then with medium length.

Hey Ace,

The density is about 60 % all over I think on this one..could have been 65.

The piece was slightly bigger than the one on the front page. I did put a some recession on the template for this one.

You're right about shorter hair being unforgiving. I have to make sure my hairpiece hair is basically the exact density of my side hair otherwise it wont work.

Steve

I really like these shorter styles that guys like Steve L and Kev M are trying. They just look such normal, modern in style that the word wig would never enter your mind. Great job.
