just got my first toplace and the hair is pretty long (> 3").. obviously i need to cut in... i just don't trust anyone now i m thinking to do the cut-in myself... anybody has similar experiences? any tips?
do u know if all i need to do is to cut the hair uniformly over the whole unit to the same length and thats it? (if so, that should be pretty easy!).

when I was wearing toppers, I used a Robo to cut a couple of units in, and although the hair was CUT, it wasn't cut with a STYLE. So to keep from looking like an actor from a bad 70's cop show, I had to do extra work styling the unit before I left the house.

It might have been partly due to the fact that I didn't have much experience cutting it in myself, but if you ask me there is just no substitute for having a trained stylist give you a good cut-in.

Now that I am rockin' the full caps, it's a no brainer. I just slap the unit on my head and with a few simple pointers any stylist can cut it, since the only blending needed is at the sideburns.

I'm 36 but I like to wear styles that younger guys wear, and for that you need a proper cut-in by a stylist who knows how to shape and texturize.

but there have been some people on here using robocutters and such pulling off very modern, trendy styles.

Im in the same boat as you. I try different stylists here and there, and now im gonna try to send a unit to debbie and see how that goes. I hope it goes well, cause then i can always send her the units for a cut in, and she does it for a lot less money then some stylists charge who specialize in this stuff.

I mean if you cut your hair with the robo to like 2 inches lets say. If u spike ur hair up, u might look like a military man. But if u comb the hair forward and spike up only the front, then it would probably look good. U could always take a pair of thinning sheers and lightly cut the top of the hairs after the robo to give an uneven look.

There are a lot of do it yourselvers out there pulling off amazing styles. In fact the best styles i have seen on this forum have come from people doing it themselves.

emery: I do my own hair-cuts (real hair and hairpiece) myself with a robocut and with some practice I developed so many tricks and artistic ways of doing everything myself.

Also, I don't agree with those who say that the robocut doesn't cut the hair with style. A robocut is held with our human hands which are controlled with our brain and when we add some creativity to it, we can become just a good as the best hairstylist in the world.

There are also some helpful and necessary 'attachments' with it which help you with your creativity.

It's been 20 years now that I haven't stepped into a hairsalon and my haircuts are as good and even better than all my friends I know and I say this with modesty and a realistic mind. I even attended 3 TL conventions without shame haha...

A robocut will only do what you want it to do

Hans

I have to agree with Hans. anyone that has met Hans at the conventions can vouch that his haircuts look second to none.
But here is the difference....not everyone has the confidence or the will to do these things on their own, so this is where the stylist comes in.
There are many different types of people in the world...and some are willing to take the do-it-yourself thing only so far. And that is fine, in fact for me...its great . I am glad there are those people as It keeps me in business... thank Goodness!!
Its like me with my car. sure, I feel like I am smart enough and have a good enough understanding of the automobile that I could probably learn, with minimal effort, to change the oil myself, . but do I WANT to change the oil myself....no way!! I would rather just pay someone that knows exactly what they are doing to do that for me. Now if an oil change cost me hundreds of dollars...well you can bet that I would learn to do it myself.
so its an individual thing......and I'm glad that some of you still want me to do your cuts for you....I appreciate the business for sure. But I can also appreciate that there are those like Hans who are totally self sufficient and can master these things on his own....and he looks fabulous doing so!!

And I totally agree with Debbie also, very good points.

And having seen her work at all 3 conventions, she's extremely talented and understanding regarding our needs as hairwearers.

A person like Debbie is rare.Shes at the top in her field.Toplace is about freedom.
When you find Toplace its like getting out of hair jail. You can now call the shots.
You can cut and style a hair unit with very good results but it takes time.
Robo unit gets you in the ball park but getting on base takes skill. If you have any
doubts,STOP!You will screw it up.Send it to Debbie or find a Debbie in your area.
I am just being honest and not trying to scare anyone.Mich Baldy has a current video
that is great.

thanks all... i will get a robocut to do my side and back... specially after watching the hairdirect video... (btw, they hve some very amazing self-help videos!)

i have just downloaded an ebook "cut your hair at home like a pro"... it covers the basics, but have given me enough confident to cut my own TP.

just thinking how short i should go now.

I think its cool to do things on your own. but do regular, non balding people worry about such things as cutting their own hair? no. Because they can get a good haircut for 8, 10, 15, ok maybe even 20 dollars from a good salon.

But for us its kind of sucky. Its hard to go into a regular place and explain everything in front of people, and if you go to people who specialize in it, (with the exception of debbie), they wanna charge you 100 dollars or more.

I think finding a good stylist who doesnt specialize in hair systems is almost as good as doing it yourself sometimes.
