More Shedding (Could it Be Salt Air?)

April 8 2008 at 10:16 PM

I made a joke about my shedding and that it must be the radiation in the air.  Then it I got to thinking.

  1. I live on an island (literally surrounded by the ocean on all four sides).
  2. If I look out my front window the water is no more than 40 feet from my house (I'm not rich, just live in a cove).
  3. I determined that the hair that sheds is breaking (nothing to do with the knots).  Breaking would suggest hair is damaged or dry hair.
  4. If you saw my grill you'd see the damage that salted air can do in no time at all.

So... I wonder if it's the salt air where I live.  It's not something I would ever have been able to test elsewhere because I'm always here.  Has anyone else experienced shedding similar to this who lives that close to the ocean?

I'm jealous of your location!!!!!!!!

I would try two products, first try getting some Paul Mitchell WaxWorks.

You saw my write up but there was a lot of additional info about the protective ingredients in this product I researched and didn't go that deep in my review.

And everyone here that has tried agrees that nothing leaves the hair quite as soft.

Second, I would try Nexus Exxtra Hold Gel. This stuff is like body armour for hair.

Third I would try the silicone spray.

Hope this helps.

I will also add that I have been without my products and picked up some fructis stuff, doesn't look like there are any bad ingredients,
but suddenly, I'm seeing breakage in a piece that was just fine until I ran out of WaxWorks, TeaTree, Joico and Nexus.

Literally after using some other products for like 10 days a piece that was fine suddenly started having hairs break.

I picked up some WW 3 days ago and the piece on my head, the hairs aren't breaking anymore when I pull on them.

Weird for sure, the hair breaking because I just have not seen that since last year before I discovered my fave hair products.

I started doing AGs pull test the other night and the hair was breaking.

Now, after 3 days of using WaxWorks the same piece still on my head, the hairs aren't breaking when I pull on them.

Agent Smith, how's you pieces holding up? (AS uses WaxWorks)

I have the same problem rob....mine usually last 2 - 3 weeks before they shed....my first system lasted months and never had a problem but since this year ive gone through alot of units as the shedding has been crazy and ruins my hairline

Right now one side of my hair in the front is thin and the other side is thick as can be lol....wouldnt be much of an issue if I was older but because i'm young (21) it does look a bit strange

I think it's my order preferences, so with my latest order i've changed it up a bit to see if thats the problem..you may want to try the same thing

BA also offered to add hair to the systems that shed by sending them back to the factory...problem is I only have one system in my new color so I need to wait until my next order comes first lol

Hi caz, since we see the same issue I'm wondering if there is a similarity... something that is causing this.  Do you happen to live near the ocean?  Salt water can dry the hair and cause it to break.

The shedding I am seeing is not at the knot, its because the hair is breaking.  What typ of shedding are you seeing?

hey rob

mine seems to be breaking off the same way as yours, not at the root

I dont live close enough to the beach to have the salt affect it though

How do you style your hair usually?

I use a mousse in the front and that's about it.  I brush it up in the front so it's kind of a spikey look.  The mousse I use is alcohol free.

Has to be something here that is preventing us from getting any duration out of these.

I brush mine up in the front too....hmm I just cant put my finger on it

I have to resort to the brushed down front look after about 3 weeks because the front just thins on me and it ends up looking kind of patchy

Has to be something we are both doing. I wash the hair about 2 - 3 times per week using nanoworks.

I'm going to test my next unit which I ordered a little higher in density and see how that goes..i'm hoping that will be my solution

Yes, I have found that I have to do the same thing. Brush it down in the front but more at the 4-5 week time frame.

Too much brushing, gel, washing all that stuff will take a toll on the hair.....I use nothing on my piece, only water...wash it only when i release....and i use a wide tooth comb.....no shedding here......going on 3 months

Be gentle

I saw this thread and I had to respond...I am going on 8 months...and I can't say enough about Debbies knot sealer ...it has stood the test of time...I sleep/shower everyday and style the unit...I don't use the fancy shampoos or conditioners and Nearly Natural...Go figure...I've lost maybe a few hairs but not much at all or at least you can't tell it...just received 2 new units and will keep this one for back up.Cheers

Breaking not the Knots

April 16 2008, 5:44 PM

Thanks for the reply guys,

I've tried the knot sealer and it didn't work for me.  In our situation the hairs are breaking rather than coming loose at the knot.

If you only use water on your unit, how do you get it clear?

When i say i only use water, thats on a daily basis, spray some water on my hair in the morning and i am off.I do clean it once a week after a release with conditioner and it stays clean all week for me.I do wash the sides and back daily in the shower though.

Like i said before and this is just my opinion for myself.....I think that too much brushing, gel and washing of the unit takes a toll on it.And yes, knot sealer is a must.
