Questions about getting a cut-in

Never when to get a piece cut-in yet and just wondering how it works.
Do most people shave their own head and attach the piece before heading over there?

Can you get a piece cut-in properly without having the piece attached to your head??

1, you simply ask the stylist over the phone should i come in with the piece on or off?
2,the cut in off your head is a basic cut in, which may require some blending at the end point's
