Jake so I had my piece cut in and the did the thing where she staggered the lengths--however it still feels too long to me and doesn't look exactly like the look I wanted to achieve. She was staggering an all SFS Freestyle at around 2 inches 2 and 1/4 inches...if I stand the spikes up they seem to fricken tall so I just pust the hair forward. What lenght have you found works for your Jake look that doesn't expose too much of the base? I had a problem one time when I went below 1.5 inches because without gel the hair would stand on end.
Basically I just have it on my head spray some water on it, brush the front and top straight up and cut it with shears til I like the length, I do it incrementally so as not to go too short.
I know what you mean about too short, but if you do a little each time, you can get it down to where you want it without going too much, I dont really know what it would be inch wise - EDIT - with a ruler looks like the front is about EDIT 1.5 with the top about EDIT 1.25/1 inches, some areas a little more/less...So I would try 1.5 throughout first, brush it out, style it with water, or even product and see how you like it, I typically do it within a day or so, then the following day I might cut it down a little more, which is what I did with this one.
I also runs some thinning shears over the top to kind of get a layered type feel, not necessarily throughout just angle the thinning shears and throughout randomly cut and brush out.
Your eyes in the mirror will be your best on how it looks, I do a little at a time, brush it, I also like to try and brush it different directions, like the comb down, to the side, etc...to see how it looks with those style as well.
Just come it all on the top and front straight up do some cuts, brush it back and comb it up again to get the loose hairs out. I usually angle the shears very slightly to as not to get a straight cut. I also make sure the front is angle so the middle has the highest point.
Your eyes will be the best judge, a good rule of thumb I use is to use my two fingers on one hand holding the hairs to be cut a little bit up from the base with the hair brushed straight up and cut the tips, go to another spot, and do the same, brush it some to get lose ends out, and bursh it straight up and continue until the top (crown forward is cut) try to keep it a little longer than you normally would until your done. Wash it and your hair (I do it with it on)...wait a day and come back to it, and tweak as necessary
Make sense?

Now way would I do all that myself...since I am not good at cutting hair--but I am going to have my barber go down to 1.5 inches so it does not have those long sides that curl around and I am going to have her take some length off the top. I will repost when I get the results tomorrow.
I agree also, the second (new piece) looks alot better than the first. I would maybe cut the front just a tad shorter but I would not mess with the top. Wear it for a couple weeks first before you cut the top. With the longer length you can try different styles.

Second pic looks much better & looks very realistic. As I have learnt (& probably you have also) if its ok then just leave it alone, don't mess about with it!
I think I am going to just have the front sides done a bit shorter--just the very front ledge and leave the rest alone....too short might be a problem, but right now the sides are curling around in my temples area and a girl last night asked if I got my hair permed! haah I showed another friend today and they said to shorten the sides.
