I don't wear yet but I bet you could at least blow dry it on the cool setting from the underside so as not to push the hairs through the lace.
This reminds me of a topic I've been meaning to start about straightening and curling irons...

As seen on the HCM commercial ...

July 16 2008, 12:09 PM

On the infamous HCM commercial .. one of
the hairwearers (or they could just be paid
actors like most of the infomercials) ..
says ...

I shower with it ... I blow dry it ....
Just as if it was growing from my scalp ..

Is that possible? I only ask because
I don't know if you have to blowdry and
style the piece BEFORE you put it on ..
or after ...

I'm getting a longer piece to start with
as I have a bit of a ponytail ... and
I blow my natural hair ... just wondering
if once it is attached .. I have to take it
off again ....

What's your experience ...

Thanks in advance ...

Put it on a styro head and let it sit in front of a fan. It dries fairly quickly this way, and the hair doesn't have to be completely dry to attach. Just hit the base with some alcohol and a warm hair dryer once the hair itself is fairly dry.

once again,

i am going to chime in because heres yet ANOTHER ridicolous post!!

can you blow dry a hair piece? its hair tied to a net! why wouldnt you be able too?

everyone think about this? think about what it is! its hair tied to a net!! nothing more!!

someone commented that you should put it on the cold setting.. put it on whatever setting you want! its REAL HAIR!! it drys with heat!!

treat it like your own hair!! i assure you its not that different!

wash it, dry it, shampoo it, condition it, play with it in the water, jump in a pool, go kayaking, run, DO WHATEVER! its not going to break!!

i know most of the hardcore people are the ones on the forums and the newbies but take some words of advice, stop thinking about every little thing!! dont let the hair run your life!!!!

all you need is the right color, a proper cut in and what else is there to worry about? attach it! even on some of my earliest and worst attachments to my standards of today, i never had an accident!!

i treat them rough, i wash, comb style gel hairspray!!

i dont know what else there is to say about it.. its just a net of hair!!!! attached to your head!! not a computer chip with a brain!

anything you can do to your real hair you can to do your hairpiece!!! i assure you, if you pull too hard even real hair will get pulled out just like a piece!!!

end of story!!!

hope i wasnt too harsh but i think some people on this forum need some wake up calls!! life shouldnt be ruled by a hairpiece! otherwise dont wear!! SIMPLE!

Haha Dom, I like your post and I agree with you.

Of course I understand most newbies because I used to be one myself but still, it looks to me that the more we have information available to them (with this forum and by email) the more some of them get entrenched in "immobility" and/or they are looking for complete scripts with all steps in details without leaving room for some personal initiative & thinking and so months and even years can pass by and... they remain newbies.

Several of us on this forum started when there was no internet, no forums and no emails to get info from and nobody to share this stuff with. And yet, we made it, we relied on ourselves.

Those who don't agree with me can bring this subject up to me at the upcoming Windsor convention, I'm always game for some honest man to man talks haha...

But there are some encouraging news too.... I also noticed some newbies becoming leaders in this field and even regularly giving advice now on this very forum !

Hans

You disagree with many of your fellow old-timers, Dom. Many of them say that if you want to get a long life out of your SFS unit, treat it with TLC.

Personally, I'd rather live my life the way you say, and just buy units more frequently. But those who are tighter on cash may want to be more careful, in order to extend the lives of their hairpieces.

Of course, it's always possible that your fellow old-timers, the ones who recommend TLC, they might just be passing on superstition for all I know. I'm pretty skeptical that a water-filter on one's shower would make much difference, for instance, unless you have really hard water. Even, I should think the occasional shampoo would deal with that. Then again, I've been wrong before.

You are able to blow dry. Just keep it on a cool setting (this is especially important if the hair is synthetic.)

Have to agree with Dom.

Though for complete newbies i can understand they are afraid to ruin a unit maybe for whatever reason.

But seriously.. some of the things i have read make my head spin faster than a bloody merry-go-round on drugs.

This is not aimed at homer in any regard, I just think a lot of this hair wearing stuff relies on common sense, and unfortunately that has become a somewhat rare commodity nowadays.

Oh and I agree with Sester, my post wasn't aimed at you either Homer, your question is legitimate and never be shy to ask questions here.

I was answering Dom's funny message which reminded me the 'common sense' and 'personal initiative' things that I dwelled upon a bit here lately haha

An occasional blow-dry with hot air shouldn't be too bad as long as you use common sense and not hold the the blower over one spot for too long. HEAT DOES DAMAGE HAIR so blow drying with hot air every day will shorten the life of the piece since it doesn't get the conditioning and protecting benefits of natural oils from the scalp like real growing hair does.

Re: As seen on the HCM commercial ...

July 17 2008, 10:35 AM

heh heh ... so now I get it ....
dumb questions on this forum get 12 replies
from members and all the time needed for
someone to get overly worked up
over it to sit down and write a long winded
criticism ....subtly venting their misdirected
anger and castigating the poor guy ..

and the serious questions sit there
in limbo ...

I love it...
Those critical comments certainly keep me in business
because those people to whom you made them too ..will
remember them years after you even forgot you said
them ...

Where I grew up in NYC's Little Italy .. those guys
would never forget a word you said ... even years
later ...I remember one of the mob bosses pointing
his finger at me as a kid saying
"Loose Lips .. Broken Hips!"

Remember when your parents criticized you ..??
Betcha those are still your limitations today ..
what you say to yourself in those quiet times

I sure hope those good ole boys at Nasa ask a
lot of dumb questions before they send the next
rocket up ... because relying on good ole
common sense can surely get someone killed ..
especially when there really is no definition
of common sense ... it's only common to that
particular person's belief system and how
they grew up.

So ... words like common sense .. normal .. ??
Beats me

The definition of Normal: The similar interests,
qualities, behaviors that at least 50 percent
of the surveyed group being polled or which
they all agree to.

Which means if you are at a party of transvestite
dominatrix queens ... If you do what is considered
'normal' in this group .. you may wake up with a
limp and a very sore, welted butt in the morning !

I look at forums like this ... The old timers stick
around because they sincerely want to help the newbies
... giving them the benefit of their experience ..

And the newbies are on here .. because they have
a sincere excitement, and many .. not all .. at
least the smart ones, want to learn from other's
experience instead of making costly mistakes ...

To me .. it's like the difference between the
government and private industry ...

In this city, a private company can put up
a luxury skyscraper in 6 months ..

meanwhile NYC local projects .. like digging
up a street .. or NYC's antiquated transit system
.. or even the WTC project fiasco ... even the
simpliest project ...runs millions over budget
.. there's no clear plan ...
no body knows what's going on ...

I guess they work on 'common sense'.

Ya gotta love it ...
I can't wait for the nasty little replies ...
I hope I haven't pulled any wings off any little
flies

Homer .. you can make my head spin anytime you
want .. because I know it is my choice whether
to read something .. or ignore it ...after all ..
with the millions of informational nuggets
bombarding our brains throughout a day ...
we can't pay attention to everything .. but
we can choose ...

Re: As seen on the HCM commercial ...

July 17 2008, 12:02 PM

guys i never said it was a dumb question. i didnt mean for the post to come off as pompous and what not..

and i mean no disrespect to anyone at all from my post. old timers and new timers.. this forum is what got me into wearing and i asked alot of questions too..i even wwent to BA's house the first time to get clued up..

but the best advice you can give to a newbie which should answer almost any question is that..

just about anything you can do to your regular hair you can do to a piece.

with regards to the blow drying issue.. i jut havent seen the hair get damaged from it.. i blow dry the piece every single day after the shower on the hot setting. every day! i blow dry it before i attach it as well so its nice and dry! and my pieces last easy 4-6 months.

the water issue that was also mentioned.. maybe it does effect the piece.. i just havent seen that either in my own experience. the ocean water the water from pools.. there just doesnt seem to be any drastic effects on the hair.. the color fades a little over time..

in my case this summer color faded after one month because i spent 5 out of 7 days in the sun, was in the salt water 2x a week and swimming in a heavliy chlorinated pool 3x over the corse of that month..so think about it after alll that abuse.. the color only faded a little and it took 15 minutes to recolor it with the stuff you buy in the store.. just find the brand and # which matches your hair and you will never have to worry again!!

just use a quality conditioner and a nice color friendly shampoo and you should be fine!

in my opinion the only styling aid you cant use on a piece that you can with regular hair is a comb! use a brush.. but thats it.

and for the guy who was mentioning nasa and astronauts... hairpieces just are not rocket science! dont make it into rocket science!!! its hair attached to a net.. not the next spaceship entering space!

Re: As seen on the HCM commercial ...

We can debate all day long about what is good or bad for hair, but it's a proven fact that heat dries out hair. Once in a awhile? No big deal. But use moderate heat. Processed hair can be conditioned to make it soft, but it does not receive sebum as your growing hair would that helps protect it from losing moisture.

I have found that cotton pillows (or other porous cloth) sucks the moisture right out of the hair. Certain styling products do the same. And enough heat is also going to dry the hair to an extent. Some say the chlorine and such in non-filtered water will also dry the hair.

I am am still tweaking my Blue Max Climate Control Serum, but soon you will be able to worry a lot less about heat, styling products, and other things that come in contact with your hair that could potentially dry it out. It coats the hair shaft to lock in moisture and keep the bad stuff out.

Blue Max

JRob .. is the Blue Max product your design ?

And something you mentioned which I asked about
in a previous post which no one answered.

You wrote that cotton pillows sucked the
moisture out of the hair.

I read years ago .. when I first started researching
the clubs, etc .. that if you wore your hair at
night .. best to use a silk pillow case.

Just wondering .... Thanks in advance.

Re: Blue Max

Count-

Yes, the Blue Max product is something I have developed. If you are going to be at the Windsor convention I'll make sure you get a sample.

I got tired of my hair being dry all the time, so I took some suggestions of people on the forum and tried silicone based products which did more to help the hair retain moisture than anything else I tried. My formula is a silicone base with natural oils that are chemically very similar to sebum (your body's natural hair/skin protective fluid). A few drops applied to damp hair after you wash and condition and the hair retains moisture MUCH longer than it normally would. It's especially useful if you use styling products which can be very drying to the hair, even if they are alcohol free.

And about the pillow cases, several people use satin and swear by them. My main sheets are made of a palm fiber which I don't believe is as absorbent as cotton, but I have experimented with removing the piece before I go to sleep and there is DEFINITELY a correlation between the hair touching the fabric and the level of moisture the hair retains. Even my pillow cases wick moisture out of the hair. I don't have a meter that allows me to test exact moisture levels, but the touch test doesn't lie.....absorbent pillow cases DO suck moisture from the hair.
