In the past I reported that I had some trouble getting a natural looking crown. (E.g., hairs would end up criss-crossed in funny ways in the crown, or it would end up being a funny shape, etc., and consequently, it wouldn't look natural.) A while back, I figured out that the secret was to get some "lift" into the crown hair, but for me that required some "poncing" to accomplish. More recently, I've figured out an easier way.
Here's how to accomplish this with a minimum of poncing: Comb your hair straight up when you get out of the shower. Unlike my natural hair, the hairpiece hair will actually do this, even when the hair is several inches long. Then you let it dry like this until it just a bit damp. (As an extra added bonus, the hair dries much faster when it is standing on end like this.) Then, when the hair has dried to the point of being only a bit damp, it is ready to style, and there's no tell-tale crown.
Darius you're turning this into a science, thats a bit fatal in hairwearing. Many before you have gone down this route & the result is 'Im happy with my shaved head' (not)
I check the front hairline is looking good, the crown is never a concern for me as I never show a crown. My hair is brushed back & the crown is covered. Just be happy you have hair & don't complicate things by stressing about an artificial crown.
BTW, please don't quote me as I will not read it, I don't have the time
With all due respect, Shaun, you don't know what you're talking about, and you know nothing about my disposition. I comb my hair forward, and therefore my crown is very visible. People stand over my shoulder all the time at work, looking directly down at the top of my head.
Trust me, on a couple of occasions, the crown was a dead giveaway because I screwed it up and it looked completely awful. Not a little wrong, like some criticisms about crowns that are too far forward, as I can live with that. The crown was utterly and completely wrong.
And now I know how to do it right, and it's quick and easy and simple to do. (But not terribly obvious how to do right easily. I've been doing it right with a bit more effort for quite some time now.) The road that you suggest is the road to shaving my head, since if I'm not happy with the way that I look, and then what's the point of wearing hear at all?
The road I follow is to objectively observe what needs improvement and to figure out how to make it right.
Besides, what's the point of this forum, if not to figure out how to make your hair look as natural as possible? If you think you can just slap the thing on your head and be done, and you don't give a sh*t if anyone is laughing at you behind your back, then you don't really need any forum, do you? In that case, don't worry, be happy.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much about the crown at all. I once had a PSB piece, and it had a very unrealistic crown. But to be honest, nobody batted an eyelid. In fact, nobody but myself + a mirror could see it
Even if people are above and behind you, the chances of them thinking "unrealistic crown" are very slim.
I would prefer to concentrate on getting the blend correct at the back. I think that is the biggest challenge sometimes, esp. if you have a high density piece....

How could you possibly know this without eyes in the back of your head?
I sit at lectures and if the lecture is boring, I sometimes have nothing better to do than observe the pattern of the crown of the person sitting in front of me, or check out which people in front of me are getting bald spots.
I understand that there's no way that I'm going to achieve a perfect crown, nor do I think I need to. What I want to avoid, and now succeed in avoiding using almost no effort, is a crown that doesn't completely suck.
When I get out of the shower and my hair is wet, I brush it all into place so that it dries styled generally the way I want. This includes the crown. I like for my hair to look good from all angles. Just because I can't see it doesn't mean others can't. To not make the back/crown look good is kind of like not ironing the back of your shirt because you don't see it in the mirror ! LOL!

Yes but that is because you have an interest in hair.
Other people get bored in lectures, and start looking at the ceiling or the floor. Honestly, the last thing they are interested in is hair.
But I take your point that you don't want it to look like a dolls hair, and look totally fake. And I agree, it's best to style it a bit! But having gone from an ultra-realistic crown in my i-lace, to having a pretty fake one in my PSB, I don't know if it made a huge difference to most people. Ecept for myself, I really thought the i-lace one was magic...
One thing I've noticed about guys with a natural full head of hair is that nearly all (80% +) of them have some sort of crown. Very few guys with a full head of hair don't have some sort of crown.
I think it keeps the odds in our favor to have a good looking crown.
