New here.. a few questions

Hello,

I'll admit that this is a very difficult thing to talk about. I'm a late 20's female who inherited really terrible hair from my mother (it started to fall out in my early 20's). I see that most of this forum is male, and I really hope it isn't a problem that I post here. To be honest, that made the decision to post here even more difficult.

I recently started wearing a hair-thing (I don't know the proper term for what I have), and a woman in the Boston area is the one who does all of the ordering/maintenance for me. Met her through my mom, who has been her customer for the past 12 years, or even longer.. I don't remember. Anyway, right now I need maintenance every 4-6 weeks.

The problem is that I am really unhappy with the hairline - after browsing the pictures on this site I realize that it could look so much better. I don't know anything about how to get started, who to talk to, or anything.

I don't want to interfere with the maintenance I'm already having done - but I would like to work on the hairline a bit. All I know is she puts tape on the thing, then uses some sort of "OnRite" glue that takes a good 20+ minutes to become tacky enough to put everything back on. She leaves like a half-inch of space between the glue and the edge of the piece, so I'd like to work with that.

Any advice would be appreciated - like I said I'm a total newbie with this stuff. I'm just glad I found other people who are actively dealing with the same issue I am.

Hi there,

I am a woman and have the same problem as you...I inherited mpb (male pattern baldness). My dad's genes must have been more dominant than mom's, gee thanks dad!)

I have been wearing for several years and used to go to a stylist like you, but it soon became too cost-prohibitive, and luckily I found this site by accident and read all I could, then tried doing an attachment myself and yes there was a learning curve but you will get through that. All the guys here and Debbie have been extremely helpful, supportive, and always willing to give advice or share their experiences. It makes it less scary when you know you are among friends!

If you are going to a stylist now, can't she make the hairline the way you want?

You can contact me directly if you'd like at tstorin@aol.com

Tina

I am Debbie, the toplace stylist. I am located about 4 hours drive from Boston in Bangor/Brewer, Maine. If you wanted to set up an appointment with me, we could go over how to do things on your own. You will learn how to attach, remove, clean etc., it would save you the 4 week service charge you are paying now.
otherwise, my advise would be to talk to the stylist you are seeing now and let her know that you want a more realistic looking hairline.......a flawless hairline CAN be achieved, but you must know how to do it.
my email is splitends805@roadrunner.com if you need some information or help with anything, don't hesitate to email me.

Thanks for the responses - sorry I took so long to write back (work). I don't really want my boss or coworkers to notice the sites that I go to.

Tina, I was basically told that I would never be able to have a natural hairline. That bummed me out because I have to be really careful when I pull my hair back into a ponytail. I do like that what I have now can survive stuff like showering and swimming, though.

Debbie, I'd like to contact you once I can figure out a day and time that is good for both me and my mother - it will be a great help to learn how to do all of that stuff on my own. I hate feeling helpless - especially when it's with something as personal as the top of my head!

I'm not sure if she says the natural hairline is impossible because I don't have the clear lace stuff in the front or what. I don't really understand enough about hairpieces to know what's what.

It's amazing the ignorance of people who are supposed to be "in the business"

I walked into a traditional wig shop to buy a cheap wig for a costume, and the ladies that worked there were blown away by my toplace piece.

My stylist, Betsy, wants me to stop by her work one day and talk to her boss without telling her that I have a full head of fake hair that is stylishly cut by her employee, since most traditional stylists have no clue about this stuff. The only one I have met who did know anything about it was a stylist who has worked with celebs and been around hair related stuff his entire life, since both his parents were celebrity stylists.
