I have had clinical depression since I was 17 years old. I am now 23 and have been experiencing PMDD for the past year and a half. It is absolutely awful. It ruins my life for the 2 weeks of every month it hits. I think that since I have clinical depression, I am more prone to PMDD. I did notice that my PMDD hit during a stressful time in my life (working on a campaign 10 hours a day) and I was not healthy at all through college. I have been on Paxil for almost a year now, but the symptoms still came with the second half of my cycle and I was fine for the first. I was prescribed Paxil CR which worked wonderfully for the good part of the month, but I still have the PMDD. The physical symptoms are awful, but it is the mental symptoms that are devastating. I find it hard to come to work, to wake up in the morning, and to exericise (which I do a lot during the good part of the month) just to name a few things. I am extremely irritable towards everyone. My relationships with my roommates completely suffer as well as my co-workers. I am anti-social during this time, and going out is a huge part of my life and something I normally enjoy very much here in this big city as a young person. I am just NOT myself at all - I am usually a very laid-back, funny person, but at this time, I am irritable, mean, and NO fun to be around.
I have read this very helpful website after searching “PMDD” on a search engine. I take Optivite vitamins daily which are for the specific purpose of helping premenstrual tension. As I said, I am also on a pretty high dosage of anti-depressants which work great for the first two weeks of every cycle (curing the chronic clinical depression), but not helping very much with the PMDD. It is very frustrating and exhausting to go through every month knowing that at a certain time I will crash. I looked at the hydration cure, but it just seems too simple. I have ordered the book you suggested to get further information. I am going to start drinking water (9 glasses a day) today. Is the salt part really necessary? If I am good about it, will I notice improvement relatively soon? I will also start to exercise every day, including the bad days, even though it is MUCH harder during this time. I really appreciate all of your help with this website. It just might make the difference!
