My 16 year old daughter has been experiencing more and more difficulties as she moves through her teen age years. In tracking her behavior patterns, it has become very apparent that they are related to her monthly cycle. She had been treated for bi-polar disorder, but the diagnosis didn't really fit. This past November she attempted suicide (right before her period)and ended up in a psychiatric hospital where her dignosis changed to clinical depression, anxiety disorder and gifted ADHD. All of these make more sense, but we still were seeing an increase in her irrational behaviors just before her period. In researching on the web I ran across PMDD and yelled to my husband to look at this !!! this is Emily. We just came from the gyno and she wants to keep her on the Lexapro she has been taking and after her next period (which is due soon) put her on a continuous birth control patch to see if we can avoid the drop in her behavior the week before her period. After finally getting her anti-depressant regulated, she had had three good weeks at school until yesterday when she had an emotional melt down and got in trouble. At these times she is very irrational and her behavior is erratic and has gotten her suspended from school twice. Yesterday she was able to remove herself to the point where she was not screaming and swearing at people, but she's back at school today and I don't know what the day will bring. She knows she has a problem, but these days before her period it's like her brain turns off and she has no control. Any comments, support or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My husband and I are really at our wits end and it breaks our hearts to see our daughter so miserable and needless to say we are scared to death for her at times.
P.S. I have always suffered from pretty bad PMS, but nothing like my daughter is experiencing.
