What meds besides paxil/prozac are effective?

I was on paxil first, and it was incredible...I absolutely loved it....it took away every scrap of PMS and PMD I had. However it also took away any ability to have an orgasm which my husband didn't care for too much. Prozac came next which didn't seem to improve the PMS as much but it did keep it away, and the only problem w/prozac was the longer I took it the worse the headaches were. To the point I hyperventilated twice and that was embarrassing. Pain meds did nothing for those headaches. Now I am on serzone but I hate taking it because I'm freaked out due to liver failure reports on it..also it doesn't totally stop my PMS though atleast I I don't become physically violent on it. I also have been experiencing tons of headaches, tingling, and dry eyes/blurry vision on and off. I am not sure if this is all due to serzone or not but I was wondering what other medication it would be smart to switch to to try. I am interested in trying something just half the month as well......but if I can't I guess I can't. No birth control pills, they turn me into a total nutcase emotionally/mentally. Thanks!

Can totally relate!

I am currently on paxil and I have lost ability to orgasm also...not fun. I experienced a severe post-partum depression 8 years ago and am now discovering I have PMDD, not just general depression. I have been on Prozac (experienced a emotionally "numb" feeling after taking it long term). The very first thing I took was Zoloft which helped intitially. I also took effexor(which is not really for PMDD). I have heard that othre drugs used are Serafem (uses a derivitive of Prozac)Celexa and Anafranil. I have also read that taking an anti-anxiety med up to 14 days before menstration (right after ovulation) like xanax is helpful, also. I am going to talk to my doc about switching meds, I have been on the paxil for 4 years now - I am either not responding to the drug as well anymore or I my symtoms are getting worse. Hope this helped a little!

Best wishes,

Kim

I'm also looking for improved meds. I have had some success with combinations of drugs. Yasmin is a birth control pill, but very low dose. I can't handle other birth control pills (you know which day I'm on by my mood!) but I'm tolerating yasmin very well. It helps even out the month. I currently take it with prozac. It worked well for the past year.

I recently tried Neurontin. That was very helpful, and I slept extremely well! Unfortunately, it was really hard to wake up for the day. I felt very sedated all day. Maybe a lower dose would be better for me. It also has the side effect of headaches, tho.

Good luck in your search!

Annette
