I was diagnosed w/ Bipolar disorder in 1993, right about the same time I got my first period. I am now 23 and am suffering from what is definitely PMS, perhaps PMDD. All the symptoms of PMDD fit me to a T. The week before my period, my outlook shifts wildly. I am not able to function. I want to die. Then I start my flow and I am okay again. Is this just PMS aggravated by Bipolar or something entirely different? I know I really need to talk to a doctor about this but the first appt. I could get is for 2/18/04. But I need support now. This is affecting my relationships dramatically. I don't know what to do. I'm so scared. Someone please write to me and tell me something. Anything. Thanks.

I was seeing a therapist for my rage towards my husband, she concluded that I was bi-polar. I questioned her diagnoses b/c I always thought someone who was bi-polar had more intense and dramatic swings than the ones I have. She has stuck with her instinct and said that they can be more subtle. However I began to notice that my symptoms occured the weeks before my period, and I don't care what she says, I have PMDD. The point is that the symptoms aren't that different, but I think the timing of the symptoms are your best indicator

That happened to me too, I was diagnosed when I was in my early 20s with bipolar but now I have been tracking it and it is consistantly the same time frame. So I believe it connected to pms.

Hi,
I was wondering about a year ago if I might have bipolar disorder, and when I talked to my therapist about it she said she didn't think so. I told her about teh uncontrollable rage I suffered with each month. She's the one who asked if the feelings were intensified during the week before my period. She didn't use the term "pmdd" but she pointed me in the right direction. I stared doing my own research and prettt much diagnosed myself with pmdd. Now I've seen several doctors, as well as a new therapist and a psychiatric nurse, and they are all in agreement with me- I have pmdd. I spoke to the psych. nurse about bipolar disorder, she asked me some very specific questions, including whether I experienced days of really, really high energy- like I could barely sleep, or felt "manic". I had to tell her no- and that's when she said I do NOT have bipolar disorder.
Maybe you could do your own research inot both these disorders, and most of all listen to your instincts- then talk to your doctor about what you think. No one knows you (or your body) the way YOU do- if your doctor doesn't listen to your ideas, maybe you should talk to another one.
I hope you are getting some effective help. You're not alone.

I would highly suggest a second opinion. I thought/felt as if I were bipolar but it is definitely PMDD. My Psy told me that it's PMDD and I was telling her no it feels like being bipolar only it's each month... She said that's not possible for a bipolar person to have episodes that way. So I think your doctor might be wrong, there is nothing subtle about being bipolar. Who knows.. I think you shud check for second opinion.
