hi. i got diagnosed with PMDD when i was 18. my family physician simply wrote out a Rx for Sarafem and basically said take this. never really explaining what PMDD was. my mom who's a Rn was hesitant about letting her daughter start prozac at such a young age. i never got the prescription filled and it hasn't been discussed since. i'm currently on birth control to control the horrible outbreaks of acne and the pain associated with my period. my GYN also said it would help with the mood swings and depression. i haven't been able to tell a difference.
i'm 21 now and ready to do something about this. i'm interesting i trying more natural ways of controlling my symptoms. any links, books, tips, etc. you guys know of that would be helpful would be much appreciated. thank you.

Hello Sarai

Welcome to the board ... it breaks my heart every time I hear about a young girl having to suffer so much because it is so unnecessary. Your Gyn needs a good kick in the pants! Since when does bc control moods, help with pain and treat acne? It is doctors like him who give the practice of medicine a bad name -- grrrrrr!

Ok, here's my advice ... first of all ... if you haven't done so yet, I recommend that you read the information on my site (link above -- PMS & PMDD Information). Look for the link titled PMS & PMDD - An Expose. Read the entire essay please, not just selected pages as I go into a great deal explaing PMDD from A-Z throughout. I also outline the best alternative methods for combating symptoms.

Secondly, I think it is very important that you go for a 2nd opinion and get a thorough check-up. You mentioned you experience a lot of pain. Well, this is not normal at all. A lot of pain either just before or during menstruation could be in early indicator of endometriosis, and at your age it is extremely important to have this checked out asap. It could also indicate polycystic ovaries, or other problems. Any undiagnosed medical condition of this nature could be what is causing you to experience more pronounced PMS/PMDD symptoms. Please, please, please go for another opinion and discuss these possibilities with a new, more informed, Gyn. Don't leave it too late, ok?

About the acne, there is a very effective treatment you could try. It is called "Proactiv Solution" and you can check it out here ... www.proactiv.com

All the best, and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
