Hi All

I have known I have PMDD for quite a while and was prescribed Aropax for a period of 3 months and found this stablised my moods. I then was placed on Yasmin contraceptive pill and whilst I did not think it had made any difference my family and friends begged to differ. Due to a bad pap smear scare I came off the pill a couple of months ago and my life has become a complete hell. At least now I know I am not going crazy and what is causing this. I am hoping by my next cycle the tablets will have kicked in. I am spotting slightly so coming to the end of the torment and just felt compelled to say hello and ask how other women are coping with this?

I think the family doesn't notice the internal symptoms you might have had being on Yasmin. I am on it and plan to get off it because it has made me absolutely depressed for a long time before period and it keeps getting worse. Right now, I'm starting to feel much better so I know my period will happen today. I keep telling my family I'm feeling very depressed and they don't notice. I prefer not to be on yasmin,I agree not much help in my case.

I've just come to the conclussion that I too am a PMDD'er. I have had the same negative effects from taking Yasmin. I don't think that I ever suffered from PMDD until I started on BC. Does this make sense? Also, I read that Yasmin is supposed to help w/PMDD so why is it making me feel more mental than anything? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hi Tara,

Welcome to the board. I can't give you exact explanations as to why hormonal BC can play havoc with some women, and not with others, it simply would take too long and get too involved. All I can say is that it is not uncommon for women to start on a hormonal BC only to then find they have worsening PMS symptoms, even if they never had PMS before starting BC. There are several reasons for this. If you want to remind me at another time (when I have more time at my disposal, I will explain the 'why' in more detail.)

And despite Yasmin's claim (and others) there is no BC that actually cures anyone of PMS or PMDD. All that the BC can do for women with PMS/PMDD is regulate the cycle and make it more 'predictable' and lessen the severity of some symptoms for a fortunate few. It is also helpful for skipping menstruation as a means of avoiding PMS/PMDD but I don't recommend doing this for more than 3 months at a time. It is important to allow menstruation to occur as it is the feminine time of cleansing and detoxification of the body. Also, I always recommend going on the lowest dosage BC (which is far healthier) if at all possible. If used correctly, the low dose BC's are equally as effective at preventing pregnancy than the conventional higher dose pills.
