5-HTP

Hi, I've been watching this forum a few months and have been happy with the amount of information you have provided here.

I've been suffering from PMS and PMDD since I was 15, and it has gotten much worse over the years. I stopped drinking coffee 1 year ago, have been tracking my moods for the past 4 months, try to eat healthy and exercise, and am trying to implement some of the other suggestions made on this board.

I decided to try 5-HTP for now. I've taken it twice - once last month before bedtime (I spent a week humming and hawing over whether to take it or not, so that after the 1st try my cycle was over), and then once last night after I got home from work. As usual when I'm PMDD-ing, I dreamt all night long, as I did the night before. I understand that dreaming all night long causes a depletion of seratonin in the brain, and I noticed a correlation between my cycle, depression and amount of dreaming.

I will continue taking the 5-HTP, but am wondering when is the best time to take it? In the morning or before bedtime?

Thank you for providing a place we can come to.

Hi, and welcome to the board.

First let me address the all night dreaming issue you mentioned. It is not dreaming in itself that causes serotonin depletion, rather it is the stress created by not achieving deep sleep on a regular basis (sleep deprivation due to a sleep disorder, etc.). For those interested in sleep patterns, and what is healthy sleep and what is not, you can read more here: http://www.sleepdisorderchannel.net/stages/

About the 5-HTP. First of all, I have to mention that 5-HTP and L-Tryptophan are not the same (5-HTP is a derivative and not as effective as the amino acid L-Tryptophan). You can read more about it in the link I provided above if you have not done so already. However, if you want to give the 5-HTP a try, then I recommend taking it one hour before bedtime, after your evening meal.

Your body will go through an adjustment period, and you might feel sleepier than usual, this should pass. However, if you experience any disconcerting side-effects for an abnormal length of time, please consult with your doctor. Also, please don't take 5-HTP if you are also using an MAOI or SSRI.

Continue with the good work and healthy steps you've implemented, and keep us posted.

All the best,
Anthea

Thanks so much for your response. I have been taking the 5-HTP for a week now, and both DH and I have noticed a difference. I'll be looking into a source for the L-Tryptophan soon, but in the meantime I can't believe how much the 5-HTP has helped.
