He has a big infection pocket himself... He was nearly naked he had lost so much hair due to the infection.
Our vet prescribed an antibiotic for 30 days(very cheap), medicated baths every other day for a month, and a short term round of steroids. That was nearly two years ago and he doesn't have a lot of hair now...but he has healthy skin. The occasional flare up of "oily" skin has us back on the medicated baths for a few days, but other than that there are no real problems anymore.
Did your vet check for Demodex? A lot of times they also lose hair due to staph infections.
Benadryl will only help allergy related issues, and 6 of them in one day sounds like an awful lot to me. Is there another vet nearby that you could get a second opinion from?
I sure hope you find something to help the poor guy keep his hair.
Also... if he's allergic to grains, the UD is full of them...just something to think about. A good grain free food wouldn't cost you anymore than the UD does.
