Was it glaucoma?

Besides retinal detachment that's what possibly comes to mind...PRA isn't common to this breed but I guess that can happen also...found in Collies or other herding breeds I believe.

Anyway, sorry that Kelsey has to deal with this...and you too, of course, but if she can be kept comfortable (no headaches) then removal won't be necessary. Dogs learn to compensate much better than humans, and their sense of smell fills in a lot of the gaps to compensate for loss of sight. Just develop a routine like a gentle tap on the forehead while saying her name should get you quick attention, if you want to give her a treat, just slide it past her nose and she will learn to open her mouth quickly. Taking a gentle hand on her collar or harness to show her where you need her to be should suffice...in fact, I would really recommend a harness on this dog if you are not already using one.
