Classic Retro Updo

Another fun updo for a special occasion, is a vintage type updo my Mom is wearing, as seen in my Colonel Sanders shot. (Yes, that's me as a baby... not much hair then, and blonde too!)I revamped it just a bit, as we have all grown up wearing versions of it. It's easy enough to do.

Start by putting your hair up in a high pony tail. Divide your hair into 4 equal sections and 1 smaller section. You will be making rolls and pinning each one. Using the scrunchi or pony holder as your center, one roll goes in front, one in back, and one on each side. The smaller section of hair will be used for the top roll which sits in the center of top of the other rolls. -Using a roller (size is your choice, I used a fairly large one) roll one section of hair under, until you reach your scrunchi band. I start in the front. Here's a picture:

Gently slide the roller out,
and secure roll by sliding a bobby pin in on both sides of the roll.

You simply repeat this process on all sides, but be sure to keep your smaller center section free. It will come up out of the middle to be rolled on top. For the last roll, the top one, you can roll any direction you want. I rolled forward. Again, slide the bobby pin in, catching just a bit of the rolled hair underneath. You may wish to use pins on each side for a more secure hold, otherwise your updo could tumble down. You can do so many variations of this style, and it's so fun to play around with. You don't have to do the top roll. If you don't want that height, just section into 4. Have fun!

Floral Bun - uses the retro basics

March 10 2003, 1:56 AM

To make this floral bun, start with the high pony tail. Section hair into 4 large sections and one small section. With the 4 larger sections, start again, just as you would the retro style by using a roller and rolling hair under to the front and sides. The difference here is that you will not be rolling one section for the back. Instead you will be looping that section, pinning in place, then moving sideways, looping in the opposite direction and pinning in place. You are making a free style bottom section so you can really do what you want. Take the remaining section of hair and twist until it begins to fold in on itself. Guide it in circles until you reach the ends. Secure by catch the back of it with a bobby pin. If I can get some step by step pictures, I'll add them in here with the instructions.

How does your mother's differ?

Are there multiple ponytails in hers, or does she just have more than the 5 sections to the one ponytail?

Cheers,

Some sections were done with the roller, and some were done like... (ro)

March 22 2003, 2:26 AM

Some were done like the Retro Twist which is the last post on this page. You sort of flip and pin sections of hair. Once you understand the concepts of this style, you can do so many variations. If you look at the Retro Twist, you'll see how you could change that to three sections, wrapping on the center one around the pony band, then using the tail of that as shown in the instructions and folling the twist and pin with the other two sections. The more sections, the more flips and curls.

Hope this helps,

Neat! r/o

I was suspecting that if I could learn the basics, I'd be able to do a lot of different variations. They're such awesome updos.

I tried the one described above this morning, but I think that my rollers are too small - the rolls ended up with more hair layered on top of itself than I'd like, and it looked like the finished product would be too compact. I only have one set of rollers that I've never used; it's definitely reasonable that I might need to go out and get some bigger ones. On the plus side, I could tell that the mechanic of putting bobby pins through each side of the curl was going to work to keep it in place. That was something I was intially worried about.

Btw, I love the idea of a board where styles with pictures are stored. It's very easy to find stuff with the organization here.

Cheers,
Jonobie

Thanks! (ro)

I am so glad you found it helpful. I thought it would also be an organized way to do it, plus, others could add their tips to the same style, so others could have another option if what works for my hair doesn't work for theirs.

I do have somewhat large rollers. You can use anythig smooth and round, like a perfume bottle, hair spray bottle... whatever size it is you are looking for. Just make sure it is smooth so it can slide out easily.

Enjoy!
