Feedbacks on Model Maniac Page 26 - Part C
การตอบรับที่มีต่อ โมเดล เมเนียค เพจ 26 - พาร์ท ซี
=======================================

I promoted Model Maniac Page 26 - Part C in several international model forums and I got kind
feedbacks and compliments from many modelers around the world. I usually compile and
translate them into Thai - to be printed and given to my modelers to keep them inspired,
but this time there are so many feedbacks that translation will take two days and I'm too
lazy to do so. So I'll just compile them for another time .

As always, very nicely done, even if the canvas (I guess that is what it's supposed to be)
over the frontal turret looks a little bit weird... more like a solid piece of concrete (or something
like that) than canvas.
My regards to Art Instructor

Thank you so much for your kind compliments, MASteel and Sun Tsu!

Sun Tsu, the kit didn't supply the canvas part, so Art Instructor made one out of
tissue paper. Anyone know what material should be used instead?

Nice model, as always, Mr Maniac. Pass the regards onwards. I must agree with Sun Tsu

material, I leave that question to the big guys..

I do have to say that Sturmtiger chap looks quite "relaxed" even if para's are firing their

Looks O.K. Few things that need improvement though. The track is too loose and doesn't
lay well on the return rollers, just floating above them. Tracks could use some weathering too,
they are too clean compared to the rest of the tank. Rear lights are incorrect and sloppy.
The right side should not have a red lense, but another small slit on the upper portion for
the blackout marker light. Decals are silvered in most areas. Center hubs on road wheels
look black, they should be green like the rest of the tank. The piece on the back of the
turret stowage box is a tripod mount for the .50 cal MG. It should be all overal green or
gunmetal, it has no wood on it. Tools have mold lines and could use some weathering too.
Lastly, the figure is incorrect for an M41A3. The CVC helmet wasn't issued till the late '70's
and early '80's. M41A3 was used by US forces in the '50's and early '60's. The soft leather,
WWII type helmet or the Vietnam era bone dome would have been worn. Pretty good effort.
Little more work and "Art Instructor" will have made a nice model. Right now it is so, so.

Hope that isn't its permanant dio base ifor t is on as well. It looks pretty bad with exposed s
tyrofoam and green foam poking through. Plaster for the road looks pretty sloppy and
unrealistic as well.

There are some nice touches i like the way exhaust mufflers are painted
But is it just the photo's or is the tc wearing a wrist watch that does not appear to have
been painted (left arm ) ? and the cover over the manlet appears a little "rough" ,

Just my opinion but i would remove the tc and display the tank " buttoned up "

Ive read about using black sewing threads to tension the tracks down onto the wheels
so that it appears heavy.

What other tricks are out there to make the tracks appear heavy?

Jazza
Ive seen pins drilled through the the hull that press down in the track in between the wheels
to give sag but you have to be carfull the pins are not to long so that they show , or another
method is a drop of superglue on top of the roadwheels or rollers and attach the tracks that way

Gino might sound harsh, but this is how we can all learn to improve.

Why sugar coat it? After all we are all here to learn to become a better modeler.

Model building is an ever-learning experience. The more open minded you are about accepting
criticism, the better you will improve.

I don't know jack about US armor (or German really). But if I was building one, I would love to
have Gino point out all my errors. So next time, I would build a much stronger presentation.

That's my VHO.

WC

-------------

My reply :

Many thanks for your kind comments and recommendations, esp. from Gino, ian and Jeremy!
They'll help us improve our future works.

The M41A3 was built as an armor, not a dio. I made the base myseff sometime ago. I showed
it because I got frequent question "Why don't you build yourself?", so this is something that
I built and the quality is typical of my work. I think it's very clear that I'd better have others
build models for me.

No problem about big stash. Yesterday I got a new built-in showcase in my showroom.
It's 2.40 m high, 2.85 m wide, and 0.45 m deep. It's a very big one with 11 storeys.
Will be good for hundreds of armors and dio's.

Gotta love those Reds and Israeli's for allowing women to get involved for what they believed
in as well.

I know other countries had women working in the military, but in non combative areas.

On another note, its such a shame that we have to HAVE combative positions when everyone
on this planet only wants comfort and relaxation.

Some nice additions to your collection Phaisal,
I was not going to enter the great debate, but the Sturmtiger dio needs some comment.
The church ruin from Italeri needs rubble adding around it. I also feel that the Fallschirmjaeger
with their mortar are out of place with the relaxed pose of the Sturmtiger's crewman with the ammo.
The mortar suggests that the frontline action is very near, but the crew member seems to enjoy
a break during reloading...
I know you are happy with them, and won't be changing them, so it's just for future reference.

Cheers

I'm glad Henk's said something, coz I've been reigning myself in when I looked at the last
couple of dios that Phaisal posted.

I won't comment on the Sturmtiger as I'm not an expert on armour, but that dio just begs for it.
I know that it's technically a dio/vignette, but come on, it just looks like a collection of components
IMHO.

The ruin, mortar team, and track have all just been plunked down on some sand with no attempt
to integrate or make 'em blend in. The Sturmtiger is practically airborne. I can actually see
shadows underneath the track.

As Henk pointed out, where's the rubble? What happened to the foundations of the wall which
should be visible? The trees just look like twigs stuck in the sand.

The ground and foliage is identical to the "AA recon patrol" dio of some weeks ago. Phaisal, surely
you must see the difference between what you are paying for and some of the other dios on this site?
I think you are being ripped off if you are paying big bucks. These dios are bein churned out without
any thought or character.

I'm sorry if I'm blunt, Phaisal, and I would be a lot more tactful if this was your build and you were
improving your skills, but Art Instructor is obviously talented. He just doesn't seem to care about
what he's giving you.

Staff: if I've stepped over the line here, feel free to tear a strip off, but I had to say it.

I agree with David. the FJ mortar crew looks totally out of place, also it seems that the Sturmtiger
is missing Zimmerit on the hull (not the part with the mortar "Turret"). I also agree with Davids
position, you are not getting what you pay for. If you look at the M41 Walker bulldog model,
the decals have silvered, Now would an expert or advanced model builder, turn a finished work
over to a client with half-azzed decal application??? I dont think so. As for the KV-1 dio, it's nice
but why are they smoking, next to a FUEL drum????

I know he is happy, Scott. That's why I'm saying what I did. Just as I would if somebody gave an
obviously crap kit a glowing review. And on a site where everyone's dedicated to doing the best
they can with their builds, this just stands out, not for it's lack of ability (which is always
forgiveable) but for it's lack of effort, which is just sad.

Hey, stop kicking my soapbox!

Hi all

I must agree that there are elements that are very good with the set up of the dio however,
i do feel that a bit more effort could have been put into the fundemental execution of the dio,
and iam sure Phaisal is happy with the end result, what did not work for me was the set up
infantary fireing a mortor guy stood buy some shells smoking...like he so far behinde the
lines he is in London,i feel dios have to tell a story a snapshot in history (a Cheyanne Quote)
and so very true it is a good clean build however it lacks i feel that "my God this is fantastic"
you can put all that effort into a clean build but if you dont link it in with all the other bits and
bobs it falls flat.
I have seen other work by this guy and its first class perhaps he had a bad day at the modling
bench..who knows,just my 2cents.
Cheers Chris

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you really want to get nitpicky, (and as we're good at that here, why not ) the fuel drum
is a German fuel drum, and the Germans did not use diesel engines in their tanks, heavy
or otherwise.
However, the drum may be empty, or sealed ( you would not really leave a fuel drum standing
about unsealed anyway would you? ) or contain lub oil...

Ohh, by the way, if anybody is going to drop sigarettes in to petrol puddles, give me a shout
so that I can get out of the way.... I know that the petrol puddle will extinghish the sig, as long
as it doesn't set of the (very volatile) petrol vapour first Don't try this at home!!!!!

------------

My reply :

Many thanks for all your kind comments and compliments! (except David's )
We're always open for criticism and recommendations, so as to improve our future works -
provided that the recommendations are of a friendly manner. There's some points I'd like to
clarify. First of all, the German tank crew in the Sturmtiger dio looks relaxed although his
friends are firing 8cm mortar because they're in the back line, there's no enemy around.
His friends - the fallschirmjagers - are just practicing. I think you all know so well that
German soldiers practice a lot before going to war. Secondly, in this dio, nobody is
smoking at all - not the fallschirmjagers nor the tank crew - and there's
NO fuel drum in this dio (there's one in the KV-1 dio, you might have mixed up both dio's).
Thirdly, it's true as Scott pointed out that I'm very happy with the end results. They're
anyway a thousand times better than what I can build myself. After all, it's my money,
not David's. So David need not bother, get upset or frustrated.

Phaisal I am glad you are happy with the work put out by "Art" instructor. In the end you are
the only one he has to please. With that said, I think he has made a slight technical error.
Strumtiger shells (rockets) came packed in a basket type sleave, that was removed just prior
to loading. The way this was done, was with the shell lying prone, the weave was cut away,
then the hand crane on the back of the tank picked up the shells, and they were man handled
through the large roof hatch. I do not ever remember seeing pics of unwraped shells standing
on end, as this could foul the back end of the rockets. They are also sitting on the wrong side
of the tank for loading as the crane only works from the right side!

Cheers

Thanks for your kind words, John and Matthew!
John, you're right about the position and location of the shells, I also got the same
comments from someone else on another site. They will help us improve our future
works. Thanks again!

Yikes, those are some pretty harsh comments, guys!
At least Gino took the time to post some good, constructive comments.

Aside from the loose tracks, it's really not that bad a build.

It's not a bad looking build at all! The points that have been made are all valid in my mind
and would expect to receive this kind of criticism in view of the fact that "Art Instructor" as
experienced as he is as a builder of fine models, perhaps needs to note that his builds are
not historically accurate. If this kind of constructive criticism wishes to be avoided. Otherwise
it is a fine looking build. Semper Fi, Mike

I wasn't trying to be mean, it's just that this guy pays "Art Instructo" to build him something
and I feel he didn't get what he payed for. I can't stand that when someone takes advantage
and tries to pass it off as authentic. Arty offered all the criticisms that I would have, but I know
nothing of the tank... just the quality and attention to detail that was... Forgotten... especially
after you see the Sturmtiger this guy did, and is posted in the Dio section.. the fig is beautiful
aswell as the Sturmtiger

I've already answered similar posts at armorama.com, there's no need for duplicated
effort here. In short, I'm happy with what I got for the price that I paid. I confirm that all
my money has been well spent.

Very nice! Small and tight, but with fine character and straight to the point, so to speak.

What does that mean, "by Art Instructor"? Are you the model builder, or someone else?

oooooh and I just checked the web link, and I love that rain and fog effect on the pic!
Definitely makes for an awesome scene detail.

Very nice work. Question tough...what are the soldiers doin on the left like preparing to
shoot someone in any second while the other one on the right is like relaxed? Good art work.

Very nice job done, MM, as allways.
But I gotta agree, those two atmospheres don't make absolute immersion though......

A nice looking model, but there is no reason in the world why they would stand the shells
on their ends. First, it would allow dirt and rocks to foul the rocket's exhaust ports and the
threads for the igniter which was screwed into the center of the base only after the shell
was loaded into the breech. Second, the shells were always loaded while laying on their
sides, there is even a painted band on the shell where the shell hoist is to be attached.
Third, How many guys would it take to stand upright a 731 pound shell, let alone several
of them. Fourth, they are stacked on the wrong side of the vehicle for loading anyway.
Don't mean to beat up a nice looking model, but details are details....

Aric, "Art Instructor" has been my armor/dio modelers for many years.

ERAD and pises, the tank crew looks relaxed because he's not in the front line, there's no
enemy around. The fallschirmjagers are just practising.

Gimp, you've made good points and they're all true. We'll be more careful in the future
about all details.

it's looks nice, but logistically, why would the Sturmtiger crewman be standing there
resting on his ammo, while the mortar team is pounding away?

James, the German tank crew in the Sturmtiger dio looks relaxed although his
friends are firing 8cm mortar because they're in the back line, there's no enemy around.
His friends - the fallschirmjagers - are just practicing. I think you all know so well that
German soldiers practice very well before going to war.

Sorry, but I must point out that your diorama base has exposed foam as well as unpainted
plaster showing. As for the M41, the TC shouldn't be wearing a CVC helmet. I think the old
WWll leather brainbucket is called for. The track looks like it needs some attention as well,
not really in a realistic position around the sprocket area, also silvered decals all around.
Perhaps the "artist" can give you a refund on the M41 dio.

As for the Sd.Kfz. 140, the parting lines left on the pioneer tools leave something to be desired.
The turret side plate clearly shows where it was clipped off of the sprue, with no clean up.
While these works are not horribly done, they certainly aren't commission level models,
IMHO and I am suprised that they were purchased. The builds show lack of attention to detail
and quality construction that an "experienced modeler" would address, especially on
commission.

I know you are very proud of your vast collection of purchased models, and I don't want to
put you down, but, I'm just being honest and forthright in saying that I believe you could
have done much better for your money using another modeler to build these kits.

Respectfully,
Steve

My reply :

Many thanks for your kind compliments, seanrgb and tigertankman!

Thanks for your comments, Steve. You've made several good points which my modeler
("Art Instructor") asked for, so as to improve his future works. I'll translate all for him.
As for the M41, it's an armor, not a dio. I made the base myself some time ago, I showed it
because I got frequent question like "Why don't you build yourself?". This is something that
I built and the quality is typical of my work. It's evident that I'd better have others build
models for me. Your comments on this helped answer a question - whether I should keep
the base in a showcase or throw it into a trashbin. The latter seems more appropriate now!

Modelmaniac,
While Steve is right in all that he says, I think your assessment of your abilities are far from
right, I have seen alot worse, it seems to me that you could very easily be a quality builder
yourself if you wanted to be. But, therein lies the rub, doesn't it? you obviously do not have
the time to build?? You must like it, otherwise you would not be doing what you are doing
with the models you have! Anyway, it is obvious that you can do it if you wanted to. There
is a enigma here for me to ponder, or not.
Whatever the case, good luck to you.

Bill

My reply :

Thanks so much, Bill, for your kind comments. In fact I have plenty of time to build
but not the talent. I also don't like the smell of paints, thinner and glue. Smoking is
already hazardous to my health, so it's better not to mess around with those things.
Thanks for your kind blessings. Good luck to you too.
