Little flaw, they both have 221 as nr.
But overall never saw such nice done Panthers.
------------
My reply :
Thanks for your kind comments! But how did you know that they have the same number?
I didn't show the number of the older tank.

between photos. Look att the radioantenna and you'll see...

McCoy is right. It's the old Panther that has german cross in the escape hatch.
The old Panther doesn't have side skirts, only the new one has.

A tank you don't see very often, esp. in this scale.
Tamiya's Gepard 1:16 (A multi-channel R/C kit I bought around 10 years ago. Its turret
rotates and its guns elevale at the push of a button, and the rear radar rotates too.
As you can see, it sports metal tracks. I painted it Olive Green with Tamiya's Spray Work
at that time. Now it gets a new life from re-painting by "Art Instructor") :

Very good work on this model maniac and i have always liked the look of this tank,
it looks awsome, wonder how it would be in war, very detailed too and realistic.

Many thanks for your kind compliments, Fallschirmajger! All credit should be given
to Tamiya who produced such a fine kit despite it's over 20 years old, and to
"Art Instructor" who re-painted it.

Yeah, this kit is in fact more than 20 years old. If the Marders are still in service,
I think the Gepards are too.

Very good paint job.
(Tamiya have many old kits, they don't update their molds so often compared to Dragon
who has more newer kits.
But nevertheless Tamiya has great kits old molds or not).

Fallschirmjager, some modelers think The Panzer IV is the most beautiful tank.
This is the one you would pick - Tamiya's Panzer IV Ausf. H with armor skirts :

How long has the bridge been broken? The fractured edges are as worn/weathered
as the road surface. If this was kncoked down recently - witnin the last few months -
the edges should be much brighter.
The guy about to jump in the water is not looking in the same direction as the AA wagon.
The sand bags look distinctly odd and out of place.
There is no 'flow' to the water - is this bridge across a lake?
There are a lot of really nice pieces of work here, but as a whole the story the diorama
tells is very incoherent.
Edit: BTW, I think that is a Mobelwagen, not a Wirbelwind.

Let my first of all celebrate your diorama as being of high quality.
But although I never post any models here myself, I hope you can all bare with me for
pointing the following out.
I think it is a bit of a problem that Tamiya produced the vierling M?belwagen. The general
consensus in regards to the M?belwagen is that the quad 20 cm guns was never
implemented as the 20 mm guns were regarded as being to weak for the AA support of the
ground troops, it was soon changed to the heavier single barrel 37 mm flak (if I
understand it correctly). Although I like the vierling design, and have made it myself I am
a little bit annoyed that Tamiya chose a design that is a somewhat anacronism in historic
accurate dioramas. Since it was never implemented one can never use it if one would
aim for historical accuracy.
Secondly I have an additional point.
It does seem a bit odd in the diorama, that the two MG gunners are using a somewhat
improvised firing position, (firing from the shoulders) when there is perfect cover in the
rubble. The improvised firing is both a firing position that would increase the inaccuracy
of the MG, secondly it is a very stressfull way for the helper to assist. (Having a machine
gun fired next to ones ears is never appreciative).
This is not to put you down, but to think about how one constructs a diorama to be a
believeable frozen moment in time.
So I would second jonS' comments here.
regards

Thanks for your comments, Jons and DXTR. It's a Mobelwagen indeed, not Wirbelwind.

@john S,
I don't agree with all your comments (but with some I do) & I have some comments of my own:
Quote:
If the bridge is already destroyed ... what are they defending?
It looks to me there are fighters in the sky and they are soon going to be attacked. On the
other hand, an MG team watches the other river bank.
Quote:
How long has the bridge been broken? The fractured edges are as worn/weathered as the
road surface. If this was kncoked down recently - witnin the last few months - the edges
should be much brighter.
Agree!
Quote:
The guy about to jump in the water is not looking in the same direction as the AA wagon.
There are maybe more fighters in the sky and he doesn't feel safe. I don't think it is a problem.
Everybody is watching their heads.
Quote:
The sand bags look distinctly odd and out of place.
I don't know. There is something wrong with it, but I don't know why
Quote:
There is no 'flow' to the water - is this bridge across a lake?
In a river, it can be very calm to. If it is not that big (but the it seems that the bridge is not
very big, so there is not a big river probably). I think the water was done very well. Maybe
some more algae (don't know if this is the correct word) would be nice.
Further comments:
1) I think the wheatering of the Mobelwagen is very nice. I like to see something different
then only panzergrey or the 3-tone camo.
2) I think the bridge, except for the algae, is very nicely made. Nice colors and wheatering,
I think that is very good.
3) Figures look nice
4) There is a camonet in the dio. Why is it there? It would be nice if it was OR half-covered
over the Mobelwagen OR thrown away by the crew or something, because of fighters
5) Maybe a bit more equipment could be added together with the soldiers.
So that's what I think of it. I think that besides the negative points, the good points also
have to be mentioned to make the modeller enthusiast to post it's new work . But of course,
negative comment must be there (with arguments) to help the modeller .
Thanks for posting
Greetz,
Jurrie

Looks good, but there are few things that I noticed. One, boots have white spots,
which should not be there. The standing figure looks like it is floating instead of
being attached to the ground.

The figures are not current either. The ICM US Anti-Terror Troops are from the 1980s.
Their armor is the older PASGT vest, their weapons are older M16A1s and an M60 MG
(both of which are no longer used). Also, the painting of them is off. Their web gear
(ammo pouches, canteens, etc.) should not be OD green. All US gear is a very dark
green. It may fade to a lighter medium green, but not OD. The colors are off on their
woodland camo vests too. There is no OD green in the camo. It should be dark green,
brown, khaki, and black. Good effort, but not accurate, as usual.

Can't help chiming in with some comments - hope you take them as constructive
criticism.
1) The vehicle is WAY too clean and not nearly cramped enough. Where is all the
extra ammo, the chow, water, kevlar blankets, AT-4's, night optics, cammie nets,
etc., etc., etc. There should be a TON more stuff back there.
2) In my opinion the purpose of a diorama is to tell a story of some sort with the
model and figures as key elements of the story. What is the story here? Two
guys are kneeling in semi-tactical poses. Two guys are standing doing...? and
why is noone on the MK-19? I'll tell you something - I spent enough time in Iraq
to know that there would be a gunner on that weapon system.
3) As has already been pointed out, the cammie pattern is all jacked up.

A friendly correction - The M60 is indeed still in use (well, it was as of May '05 when
I left Iraq). It was replaced by the M240B, but that's in line units and mostly Regular Army.
You still see the M60 around Anaconda quite a bit.
M16's should be mostly the M4 SOPMOD variant if you're being current, but could
concievably be the M16A2's if you're doing an early-war dio. As in, the first few days
of OIF (the Roll-Up). Also in the early part of the war, the old-style PASGT vest was
indeed still in use, more in the Marines than the Army, but it was there. They were
all over the place. In fact, the units who were around us recieved their Interceptors
while they were there (we inherited some of the old vests).
Correct that the gear will be a dark green. Much of it could also be "desert tan," but
not early in the war. And the vehicle would be dirty, dusty.

If you need a source of M4/M16A2 etc, www.blastmodels.com sells 2 different sets.
1 also include the SR 25 sniper variant and the other is the M4/M16 version. I think
Dragon might've reissued its AK stes but I'm not sure

Yup, I remember a engineer unit that was there that used the M60 on their trucks. Most of
the times I saw them they were providing security for the boat guys out on the Sapper

4 kits? You planning on making an army? Coolness MM! Will want to see all 4 of them lined up
-------------
My reply :
A small army, perhaps. I've been think of lining up all Tiger Is and Panthers in 1:35 scale,
but then again they'll need a very big base to stand. I think I have around 15 Panthers and
some 20 Tigers but many of them are used in dioramas.

ModelManiac, one comment on your planned platoon of early Panther As. Almost all early
panther As and early Gs have zimmerit, and almost all early As has a square or waffle (?)
pattern of the anti magnetic mine paste. Very very few early As left the factory without it,
I can only remember 1 photo without one. If you will build 4 panther A without zimmerit then
art instructor should be very careful regarding his references. If you are not concerned about
accuracy then just go on if that makes you happy
This is the reason I have not yet build my Panther A, it obliges me to buy an expensive
zimmerit tool or cavaliers or atak zimmerit products. BTW, nice weathering job done on
a monotone paint scheme.

stainless, assembling the track is a nightmare for me, I tried it before. But "Art Instructor"
has his way of doing. He would assemble the tracks using liquid glue (he prefers the
Chloroform-based one because it dries slowly) to get a full length and wrap around the
wheels and sprockets while the tracks is setting.
Morpheus, I thought only late type Panther has zimmerit and I think Dragon's Panther
A Early Type doesn't have zimmerit in the box art. "Art Instructor" once applied zimmerit
on Panther A Late Type, also from Dragon :

Zimmerit tool is not that expensive. I think the Tamiya's tool is quite affordable.
Don't use PE zimmerit until you see my Tamiya's Panzer IV that comes with PE zimmerit.
The thing looks great at first, but later on when it gets loose from the plastic hull, there's
hardly anyway to fix it back.

You're right about the tread pattern. "Art Instructor" disassembled the tracks for

look carefully when assembling them back. I tried not to show both tracks at once
but then I forgot in the third pic.

Very nice dio, MM!
However, Ive noticed that the Iraq US Elite Forces being marketed by ICM is not
reflective of the current equipment used by US forces. Its still using the old kevlar
body armor and the old-style web gear and ammo pouches used more commonly
during Desert Storm. Not your fault, really. Its ICM.

MM,
Yes, actually. The US Army and USMC figures offered by Trumpeter are more contemporary,
with Interceptor body armor, camelbak hydration systems, knee pads on some, and updated
weapons. They would be appropriate for the dio.
DML's Modern US Marines (appearing in the box art as wearing the 3-color desert scheme)
are also contemporary.
Ive seen the ICM set before, and chose not to get one. Ive already had too many DML
Desert Storm era kits before.

My reply :
A small army, perhaps. I've been think of lining up all Tiger Is and Panthers in 1:35 scale,
but then again they'll need a very big base to stand. I think I have around 15 Panthers and
some 20 Tigers but many of them are used in dioramas.

MM, zimmerit application started September 1943 (stopped September '44). For example,
all Panther D, Tigers, Panzer 4 during the time of Kursk (July 1943) doesn't have the paste
applied.
Ausf A started production Aug. 1943, so there is a few days (not even a month) window that
some "early" Panther A came out of production without any zimmerit, so its very, very few
(ex. MNH produced 3 panther A in August 1943). Though I will agree that even IN late '43 and
early '44 some tanks (Stug 3/4, Panzer 4, Panthers etc.) can be seen w/o zimm. But, with the
2,000+ ausf. A that came into being, there is an overwhelming chances that any ausf. A has
zimm.
About the zimmerit, the box pattern still has small ridges inside (vertical or horizontal lines),
using the Tamiya zimm tool will be very hard to do if I'll do Pattern 4, see link
-

.
Thanks.

some Panthers in stock and the next one will be zimmeritted for sure. Thanks for your comments.

Now I can answer doccesar's question about the tree. I asked "Art Instructor" what material
did he use to make the tree. He told me that for the trunk, he made a prototype out of wood,
plaster cement and some sculpting; after that he used silicon to cast the mould of the trunk.
With the mould in hand, resin trunk can be casted again and again (this is good idea if you're
making models for a living!)
As for the fronds he used reed or rush in making palm tree and paper in making coconut tree :

koowilliams, I don't think "Art Instructor" can communicate with you in English, and he's
busy making models from 6AM to late evening everyday - for me alone.
Argrillion, I'll pass your words to him and will tell him to use less fuel drums. Our problem
is that we don't much accessories to put into the dio's. Fuel drums is something we have
and they're easy to copy in resin.
kuman, the water was made using clear resin, he poured the liquid resin little by little,
10-15 cc at a time in several layers. And that is 'simple' water so to speak. Take a look
at his earlier work which shows 'complex' water :

The artist resin is very well applied and done up to simulate waves in Art Instructor's beach dio.
I enjoyed viewing this dio the first time and having a better look at it this time around I can see he
was really patient in stirring the resin to create the wave tops.

My compliments to Art Instructor on a very well done splinter camo and nicely faded as well.
My only tiny nitpicks would be a bit of pastel on the boots would have made it look more worn
in and perhaps a bit of weathering on the helmet. The cobblestone road appears slightly small
for 1/16 but its not major.
Nice work overall. Hope to see more 1/16 figs from Art Instructor.

A multi-channel R/C kit I bought around 10 years ago. Its turret rotates and its guns
elevale at the push of a button, and the rear radar rotates too. As you can see, it sports
metal tracks. I painted it Olive Green with Tamiya's Spray Work at that time. Now it gets
a new life from re-painting by "Art Instructor" :

So glad you remember me! Remember that time I wanted you to adopt me because you
have an awesome museum??
I know sometimes the guys at the other forum give you hard time but I still fully support what
you are doing. I visit your site from time to time and see what goodies you have.
I would like to make a suggestion for you if you don't mind. I was thinking it would be great if
you can do a photo references on unbuilt kits and mini review. With your vast amount of kits
it would be very beneficial to the everyone in the modeling community!
Take care,
WC

Totally agree with VS. Hope you can share with us some mini reviews. I am still amazed
with your collection.

My reply :
WC, there were a few guys who want me to adopt, I remember you're one of them.
Many thanks for your kind support and understanding. As for your suggestion, I'm
afraid I'm not in a position to review anything. And my unbuilt kits though a few
hundreds in number, are nothing fanciful. They're general kits available in most
places. There are sites that offer review of new kits - like a Perth military model site.
Anyway, I'll keep in mind your suggestion and Argrillion's backing. I'll see if any
of my unbuilt kits is worth reviewing/showing or not. Thanks again!
