Very nice indeed but the driver's visor blocks don't look right! Am I seeing right?
To me it looks like AI have been less careful when painting them so he's gotten blue
paint where there shouldn't be any.
Lovely weathering though.

McCoy, I'll tell AI to be more careful in painting the visor blocks
ChaosWarrior, it's difficult to write about how to. AI doesn't write English and my
translation is poor. He once wrote an article on "The Making of Famo & Sd.Ah. 116"
with some pics and I translated into English many years ago. It remains the only
article he's ever written. You may view it at :

Good looking model, nice paintjob and weathering.

Tought Panzer II were not used during the campaigns in WW2.
I probaly would be wrong, but I assumed they were replaced by the Panzer III already.
Think I should get some info about that.

With a completely new Christie suspension with four road wheels, the Ausf. D was developed
as a cavalry tank for use in the pursuit and reconnaissance roles. Only the turret was the same
as the Ausf. C model, with a new hull and superstructure design and the use of a Maybach
HL62TRM engine driving a seven-gear transmission (plus reverse). The design was shorter
(4.65 m) but wider (2.3 m) and taller (2.06 m) than the Ausf. C. Speed was increased to 55 km/h.
A total of 43 Ausf. D and Ausf. E tanks were built from May 1938 through August 1939 by MAN,
and they served in Poland. They were withdrawn in March 1940 for conversion to other types.//

Here`s more..
May of 1938, first Panzerkampfwagen II Ausf D/E (Schnellkampfwagen - fast fighting vehicle)
were produced by MAN as light tanks for cavalry units. Only 43 were produced from May of
1938 to August of 1939 (chassis number 27001-28000). They featured unsuccessful Famo
/Christie-type suspension similar to those developed by the British and Soviets. Top speed
of new tanks was 55km/h, compared to 40km/h of regular Panzerkampfwagen II tanks.
Both were powered by 140hp Maybach HL 62 TRM 6-cylinder engine with Maybach Variorex
VG 102128 7-speed gearbox. The main difference between two were the modifications made
to the track and wheels from Ausf D to E. The only component that remained the same in the
design of Ausf D/E in comparison to previous models was the turret, while the rest was
largely newly designed. The armament and ammunition stored remained the same.
The armor protection was increased from 5 to 30mm. The main idea behind Ausf D/E
was to provide cavalry units with a fast reconnaissance tank. Ausf D/E tanks only saw
service with Light Divisions during the Polish Campaign of 1939. In March of 1940,
due to the poor cross-country performance large number of Ausf D/E was taken out of
service. Only 43 chassis were completed as tanks, while the rest of chassis produced
was used for conversions such as Flammpanzer II Flamingo (Sd.Kfz.122) flamethrower
tanks and Marder II (Sd.Kfz.132) tank destroyers. // Achtung Panzer
It seems that you should change the name of the dio, if you want it to be accurate...

So is this a Panzer II Ausf. D? There's a guy on finescale.com who said this is Panzer I Ausf. C
According to Alanger - the manufacturer of this kit, this is Panzer II D and Alanger named this kit
(tank and figures) "French Campaign, 1940". I have no idea whether that's accurate or not,
just followed suit...

This is without question a Ausf D vehicle.
Only 250 of these was produced (all versions included), starting in 1937 and it was Daimler
Benz that was given the contract to manufacter Ausf D and E versions. These versions had
a suspension system made of bendable bars and those huge wheels (Christie type) with no
return rollers.

Nice diorama.
The guy that is carrying the long rifle is the famouse PTRS-41 AT-Rifle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTRS.
This weapon is the reason why the germans used sideskurts too protect their tracks
and wheels.
The Russians didn't used bazooka's or panzerfausts that much or neither at all, but
they devolped the AT-rifle.
It had it drawbacks, but I guess if its used by a guy who know how too use it, this could
be verry destructif for the Germans.
But it wasn't powerfull enough too take the latest German tanks down like the bazooka
or panzerfaust could do.
They were made of the principel of hollowcharge.
Hope that clears it up for ya Chaos.
Here us one more verry good website for AT weapons.

Art Instructor has done it again. That's a very nice diorama. I've also got a question:
This "Art Instructor"...how much does he model that he gets so many (and so good )
results? I model...quite a lot I guess, but I am not that quick hehe !
About the diorama:
- The Panzer II ==> VERY nice! I like the preshades, washing en weathering a lot..!
Very nicely done!
- Building looks very...french . Nice job. The woorden doors are very cool. Subtle things
like dust on the wooden doors (very low @the door): nice!
- I think the plants are OK...can't see a lot of it.
- The dog is very nicely painted!
- The only thing that maybe....could have been better are the jerrycans. I thing if that
they were washed, that would be a bit better. However, this is France 1940, not 1943/1944.
So it is reasonable to say that these jerrycans were still almost brandnew .
- The perspective is very nice. You can look to the diorama from 2 sides: very cool! The
only thing you need then is a rotating display hehe
Very nice & keep posting!
Greetz,
Jurrie

Jurrie, starting June this year, "Art Instructor" quitted his other job and began modelling
full time, for me alone! So he has a lot of time for modelling, I know he wakes up at six
and works through late evening everyday. There's no wonder he can build a lot. He has
good imagination too. You see the dog here, it's not from Alanger's but from Trumpeter's
WWII Soviet Red Army on Maneuver kit that he built at the same time of this dio. He moved
the dog here and I agree with him that the dog suits here better than the Red Army's dio.

water-slide or dry transfer?

My reply :
Many thanks for your kind words, Dave! The shield decals are water-slide, but you'll
have to paint patterns in the circle and square in the middle of the shield yourself.
This kit costs only $8.95, I think it's too cheap for Christmas present. You should ask
for another one as well - the Roman Legionary II Century A.D. :

ajlafleche, according to the instruction manual of Alanger - the manufacturer of this kit,
this is Panzer II Ausf. D The title "French Campaign, 1940" is the name Alanger gave to

This must be the Roman legionaire you mentioned about earlier when you put up the
earlier one. Nice work on the face and overall nice clean build. Red is tough to paint
and I think perhaps either the camera flash or the lighting must have masked some of
the subtle shadow and highlights of the red cloth areas.
Hope to see more of Art Instructor's 1/16 figs.

I didn't use the camera flash but I took pictures under direct sunlight at around 9-10 AM
and maybe the light was too bright. Umm...
AI is working on VP's Kubelwagen typ 82 w/ crew 1:15 and I have commissioned another
modeler named "Joh" to build some 1/35 vignettes (each employs a Dragon's figure set)
and also a 1:16 figure from Dragon.

An interesting composition utilizing both sides of the wall. The addition of the dog takes up
a critical corner of the dio too. As I said earlier I find A.I. has a talent for non-combat dios as
I always find them more interesting. Well done.

The only few things that come to mind are:
1. An accident or a traffic jam
2. A lazy driver who was aassigned to wash a vehicle but was sleeping instead and is
about to be scolded by his sergeant.
3. An overturned food truck on the road with soldiers and civilians stealing the food
4. 2 big vehicles meeting on opposite sides of a very narrow bridge that only allows 1
vehicle to pass
5. A vehicle smashing into an outdoor toilet and the occupant just barely manages to
escape with his pants on.
Actually the possibilities for non-combat dios are almost limitless and I suppose that's
why I find them interesting because of the stories that can be created.

MM,
It is in IDF markings, the French AMX 13 were supplied to the Israeli with at least 60
units during the 1957 war with Egypt. The 75mm gun was derived from the German Panther.
The registration number has the TSADI at the end of the last digit, whereareas Hebrew is
read from right to left. That is the first letter of the word ZAHAL or Israeli Defence Force.
Another notable marking is in the turret "V" outline which is 1st Company.

DM: AMX-13 is a light tank. I forgot how you describe that turret but IIRC Switzerland
and/or Austria had a similarly designed tank. Obviously, the design had a lot to be
desired of from a protection point of view hehe

nice work..it's by heller.,i have one also but didn't finished it. the whole kit is crude..
the scale i'm not sure if it's right..the turret is too small..hardly no space to move around..
anyway..it's a very nice piece of work..keep 'em coming.

Stainless: The turret IS really small.
Either the figure is too big (I had a 1/32 figure included in my 1/35 Tamiya M60A3 kit)
or the turret is smaller than the rest of the kit.
Considering that the kit is by Heller, I'm inclined to think that the figure is too big
(perhaps 1/32).
Then again, it is Heller....

Wow, awesome. This is actually the precursor of the Israeli design of putting engines
in the front. This little tank had such arrangement. The Israelis learned from the West indeed.

the first reliably working tank with autoloader. AI did justice to the topic. Nice!

Darthmarc, most SKIF kits fit together quite well. Anyway, according to AI, building of this one
is "most difficult", probably because of lot of tiny PE parts. Click link to see details :

You may order from this site, I think it offers the best price for Russian tanks. Better join with

Love the shield and armor! The armor plates look like real steel (iron?)! I like the way
the face was painted, too.
Though the beautiful legs are kinda distracting. Joke!
Is it possible to use hard foil for the cloth parts? As if it is an actual cloth...even the cloth's
thickness can be simulated...

The decals for my shield cracked just like what happened here. Overall it's a great paint
job though I could still notice the seams and the belt has to be painted brass.
What's the thickness of the hard foil you are talking about?

Nice paint job...one problem I think is the lorica segmentata. I think they are supposed
to be shiny (like polished metal) not dark steel. The shield I think is also from the late
Republic not the the 1st Century AS Legionary. Anyway, its not the problem of Art Instructor.
Going back to the figure...the overall paint job is really good. Well done
Cheers

a centurion in a classic life of Christ movie. Probably the inspiration for this figure.

am no historian, but i think the lorica looks just fine as it is. i guess one can argue since
he has already drawn his gladius, he must be in the midst of battle therefore exposed to
the grime and other stuff of the environment. a shiny lorica might be good for showing off
in a parade, but i dunno if its good or its shine would last in the field. oh well, i guess
there will always be a difference in opinions with regards to historical accuracy and
artistic license. building a kit or figure is really dependent on one's personal taste.
maybe the guy's legs are indeed a distraction. looks too smooth for me. more
highlights/shadows perhaps?
kudos to AI on a wonderful figure.

I would like to seek your help on painting the red uniform. What colors did you use. I'm

so the other forum members can welcome you as well? Thanks!

My reply :
Hi Arnold,
I didn't paint the figure myself, it's "Art Instructor" - my main modeler - who painted it.
As far as I know, for this figure he used only artist's oil paints. You can mix them to
get the desired red. Your figure is 28mm?, that's around 1:64, rather small one.
Once you finish it please show it here, OK?

Is that the Mini-Art Park Gate and Fence kit? It has vacu-formed parts. How was the fit and
how hard was it to build? I have the same kit but I'm intimidated by the vacu formed walls.

Yes, I think that's Mini Art's Park Gate and Fence. If you use the vacu-formed parts,
the joints between front and back plates might be noticeable and difficult to eliminate.
Instead of using the parts for once, AI used them to cast plaster cement walls instead.
That's why one Park Gate kit has emerged several times :

Defcon1, I told AI already about the tip (upwards at front and downward at rear)
but he might have forgotten that (and me too). I'll tell him again and again until
he can remember. Is this tip applicable to all German armors? And what about
American ones?
darthmarc, first I thought the dog came with Alanger's kit, but your question aroused
suspicion. And you're right. The dog did come with the Trumpeter's kit AI built at the
same time. It's apparent that he moved the dog here. Good decision, I would say...
