Looks well built, the hull is good weathered but I think the ship is in the need of some more weathering on the decks.

A nice built ship, but it needs some weathering. The flightdeck too clean for a aircraft carrier.

Many thanks for your kind compliments! This is the Nimitz in 1975. Maybe it has just been in service for not so long...

I didn't build this thing myself, but as far as I know late models from Trumpeter are good ones which fit together very well. For this ship, Trumpeter does not provide PE rails like its 1:200 Sovremenny.
So I'd suggest you buy aftermarket PE rails from some manufacturers (I used local made ones), it sure makes the ship look better.

The ship looks great! Now I want one of those Sovremenny's to add to my growing ship stash.

My reply :

Many thanks for your kind words, Scott! Do you limit your ship stash to 1/350 only? If not, I'd suggest
Sovremenny 1:200 (also from Trumpeter) because it comes with PE rails & masts at a little bit higher price.
I love it so much that I have both types (956 and 956E) built and still another one in box.

Good looking build there! . Guess I'm going have to look at getting a Nimitz too. If I can make a suggestion or two, I would add figures about the flight deck and bridge areas to bring the action more to life, and would dirty up the flight deck, those white landing stripes are a little too clean. I really like the looks of those planes, particulary the Phantoms.

Thanks so much for your kind compliments! Before getting the Nimitz, have you seen the Kuznetzov 1:350 also from Trumpeter? I like it better than the Nimitz. It sports the MiG and Su fighter planes, you gotta see their looks and compare with that of the Phantoms. It's Mr. Niphon the same modeler who built both carriers - years apart :

Many thanks for your kind compliments! Niphon said that the planes of this carrier are more difficult to paint than the planes of the Kuznetzov because they cannot be painted by hand, must use airbrush only. Here's the Kuznetzov with hand-painted planes, I like it better than the Nimitz. :

I recently watched the saga on Discovery, that's why I'm asking. They were on war exercises at the time I think.
Tanker, not to hijack MM's thread, but I think archangel has a kit.
MM, 1:350? How big is the kit itself?

Military exercise, the Kursk was practically brand new (a few years old I think, although IIRC she languished at the shipyard because Russia didn't have funds to build her in the usual rate I think). Part of the exercise was said to test a new kind of high speed torpedo (using hydrogen peroxide or whatever fuel to propel the fish). Apparently, it was highly volatile and the torpedo detonated, causing a chain a reaction of explosions with the other torpedoes and sinking the sub. Russia I think continues to blame the US for the sinking, saying it was a collision by one of the USN's subs. Coincidence or not, one 688 sub was said to undergo repairs to her bow shortly after the Kursk incident. But underwater videos clearly show that the sinking was caused by a massive internal explosion at the torpedo room.

How big is this kit? I want one too.

According to A Time to Die by Robert Moore, it wasn't a new kind of torpedo and it was very old, first built in 1990. Suspicion was corrision ate away at the gasket separating the High Test Perxide and the kerosene reactive since servicing was never a Russian strong point.

Besides which if it was caused by the US sub immediately after the collision, the explosion which was so strong it registered on seismic sensors in Norway would have taken the US sub with it.

I hope MM doesnt mind if we talk more about this sub (mods?) but IMO russian pride(?) prevented the rescue of the crew that time. IIRC, norway is willing to send rescue asap.

I've seen the documentary on Discovery and it send chills down my spine when they salvaged the Kursk, how extensive the damage is. I also recall, they were able to recover a letter from one of the sailor for her wife whos trapped in the rear (near the propeller section I think). Imagine writing a letter in the dark and cold compartment and slowly, the oxygen is getting depleted and your just waiting to die?

remember das boot? there was one scene when the kriegsberichter thought they were going to die in the bottom of the ocean and since he can't do anything about it, he just dozed off. better off they got hit squarely with a depth charge than suffer a painful death from asphyxiation.

I think the kit Archangel has is the Zvezda version. Don't know if it's the same mold as the Revell kit. Chakraphad did a a good job here.

Not entirely Russian pride. Also Russian paranoia. They were worried about the West getting sensitive technical details from the Kursk. So much so they wouldn't even tell the rescuers how one of the hatches worked.

------------

My reply :

Many thanks for your comments and compliments on the sub! It's about 10 times more popular than the Nimitz considering the number of replies. I also watched the saga on cable TV, it was real sad story. Perhaps the name wasn't right. I don't know its meaning in Russia, but it sounds like "cursed". Would you name your ship "Doom" or "doomsday" or things like that? Just my 2 cents.

The sub is about as long as the Typhoon in the same scale, but with much sleeker shape. I think it was Zvezda's product in Revell's box.

Well it really sounds ominous, but Kursk is a city in western part of central Russia. Their Oscar class subs are named in honor of cities in Russia like Murmansk and Minsk.

Also Kursk is famous for one of the largest battle during WW2

Chuck, Chakraphad (my modeler) used local made 1:200 PE rails to dress up this ship. He also made cable rigging using excess sprues. No other detail parts was used.

I bought the 1:200 & 1:350 PE rails from Mr. Pued who sent them to me by mail. I don't think he'll ship his product overseas because payment would be troublesome. His PE rails are generic rails, not specific for any ship. I think GMM and WhiteEnsign? provide PE rails in many scales and maybe more specific too though I've never used any of them.

Duncan,

A polite email to the builder may be more appropriate....

Wow, if that is the case then maybe it is okay to point out some glaring inaccuracies... I would think a commission job would be better researched.

Many thanks for all comments and responses. I myself didn't know that the wings of S-3 Viking should be folded down, otherwise I would have asked Niphon the modeler why didn't he fold them down like instructed by the manual. Anyway, I think this is not hard to fix.

Thanks, Jim, for introducing my website and menus. You've probably spent quite some time there...

Mr. Model Maniac,

Please don't get me wrong, the quality of the build is very fine. Basic construction looks to be extremely well done. There are just a few very obvious and easily researched things (that can be easily fixed too) that are wrong. Like I mentioned, since you paid for it, I would assume you would want it to be fairly accurate. I never critique another's model on a public forum (unless they ask for it), but if you'd like to PM me I'll be happy to point out a few things that can be fixed.

Many thanks for your kind offer, Kelly. I'm open to suggestions and recommendations. You can either put them here or send me a PM, they'll be very useful because I still have so many warships unbuilt - mostly 1:350 or bigger scale.
