The government will soon negotiate with Thales International Asia PTE to exchange Thai rice for French frigate as part of its barter trade policy.

Rachane Potjanasuntorn, director-general of the Foreign Trade Department, said that the Barter Trade Committee gave its approval for the Commerce Ministry to study in detail the value of goods to be exchanged and other terms of the deal.

The ministry has a rice stock of more than 2 million tonnes and aims to release all of it in barter trade.

The growing trade and current account deficits have prompted a barter-trade policy for mega-projects with trading partners.

This project worth 755 Million USD.

In fact, the "French Frigate" is KDX-2. Because Thales International Asia PTE is join company between French and Korea.

We are not as rich as Singapore (that sad story), so this is the most suitable way to got new weapon while boosting national economic. We are still nagotiate the possibility of buying new fighter jet between JAS-39, Su-30, and F-16. Someones said that F-16 is the most possible way in the view of both RTAF and government. The deal include 80 AIM-120 and 100 AIM-9. The estimate number of fighter is 16. We are interested in buying 6 Su-30. But JAS-39 is the less possible because the cost per unit and spare part is high, and it might be some problem in import agriculture product to EU because of the import quota.

Keep an eyes on the state visite in USA. The deal might complete after that.

But we can say that Thailand shall got new fighter sqn. and frigate for air defence mission soon.

Not yet, Mr. Lee. Government and Royal Thai Navy still nagotiate about this frigate with Korea. The lastest update is Korea want only rice but the payment method is still in talk while Korea already approach to Royal Thai Navy about the specification of those frigate. (We like to buy 2 KDX-2 class) The value of deal is around 700,000,000$ (around 28,000,000,000 bath)

For the completed deals - with China, trade fruits with + 100 armoured vehicles

- with Rusia, not sure if we can call it barter trade or not, but to write off the debt they owe to us of $ 30 M (for rice), we will get 2 helicopters (Mi 17, I think) in return.

Unknown del. date for both deals.

I tot Thailand will only get Chinese frigates only since u got the Naresuans coz they're the cheapest and PRC give Thai 'friendship discounts'.Does Thailand plan to buy these KDX-2 to get better weapons (i heard Thai having problems with the Naresuans) or becoz of the opportunity that Korea coincidentally accepts barter trade with rice.Surely the Koreans will not accept only rice, u'll have to pay partly with hard money and with other counter trade initiatives.I'm curious, what other commodities will SK accept besides rice in the barter trade?

For example,Indonesia bartered 30 agriculture products(rice, rubber, palm oil, tea, spices etc.) and other commodities (lots of cigarettes) for 2 Su-27 and 2 Su-30 from Russia, these collectively amount to about $117 million. What is Thai gonna give SK worth $700 million for 2 frigates besides rice?

How much does 2 million tonnes of rice worth anyway?

2 million tons of rice= $580 million???

I dun think SK will accept all 2 million tons of rice, it will drive the farmers in Korea to ruins and they've made protests recentlly when SK say they will import more rice.

What other commodoty had Thailand bartered for military hardware besides lychee , rice and palm oil.

Its good to have businessman as a PM(Thaksin), he'll know how to make these kind of deals.

If we do take rice, it will mainly go to North Korea.

But one question, does Thailand need a 5,600ton heavily armed warship? Wouldn't a lighter MEKO-A100 design do just as well? I'm wondering about the requirements here. KDX-2 can be fitted with variety of weaponry, and design modifications are easily done with simple module changes, but I'm wondering.

Well, hopes it gets through anyway. I think it`s a good idea Thailand beefs up its forces too. Definitely, good for the region. But i have doubts about hat barter trade getting through though. Was there any? Perhaps a mix of hard cash and barter like what the Malaysians are doing. It limits your options though.
