Fifty-five school children between 2 and 6 years have fallen ill after a 18-inch dead snake found in cooked rice of their mid-day meal. All the children started throwing up and were hospitalized immediately.



The incident occurred in West Bengal's Birbhum district at the Integrated Child Development Scheme centre at Rampurhat.

Dr Himadri Haldar, superintendent, Rampurhat SD hospital, who examined the sick children revealed that they dsuffer fromid not food poisoning. But horror, shock and nausea caused children to fall ill.

It created a stir with Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee terming it as "gross negligence" and demanding stern action against those responsible.

The cook Maya Konai said "There are many snakes, insects and worms in the shed. I had told the authorities to get it cleaned many times."

Towards evening, most children were discharged from the hospital.

New Birbhum MP Satabdi Roy visited the hospital and promised "measures to improve standards of cooking and distribution of meals".
