China asks Pakistan, other countries to unearth links with Urumqi violence

BEIJING: Even as additional security personnel and machinery poured into Urumqi, the Chinese foreign ministry has got into action asking
several countries including Pakistan to prove their friendship by taking a stand on the issue.

Beijing wants several countries to unearth the links between their citizens and the World Uyghur Congress.

A worried Hu Jintao, secretary-general of the Communist Party of China and the country's president left the G8 summit in Italy and rushed back to Beijing on Tuesday night as it dawned on Chinese authorities that the Urumqi violence might set off a chain reaction and eventually affect the party position.

The Communist Party boss of Urumqi said the local government will seek death penalty for those involved in the killing of 156 people during the orgy of violence on Sunday. Li Zhi, the local party boss, said the streets of the city are totally under the control of security forces.

The authorities also launched a concentrated effort to connect with all communities with the help of leaflets dropped from airplanes and appeals made through loud speakers telling people to stay calm and eschew violence.

Li made a significant revelation saying most of those detained for the violence were young students. This may not be good news for authorities, who were hoping that the young would be charmed by promises of modern development instead of carrying forward the old struggle for an independent East Turkmenistan nation.

A section of Uyghur Muslims have been demanding a separate nation in the northwest Chinese region of Xinjiang for many years.

China wants several countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Germany and the United States to help unearth links between their local citizens and the World Uyghur Congress, which Beijing considers to be behind the violence in Urumqi. One report suggested that foreign ministry officials are in talks with envoys of Afghanistan posted in Beijing on the issue.

The government had earlier issued a white paper, which showed that a large number of Xinjiang terrorists have been trained in training bases in Pakistan. The Turkic speaking Uygurs have close links with Kazakhstan and Turkey while the WUC operates from Germany and United States.

Russia came out with a statement confirming that it "views the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region as an inalienable part of the People's Republic of China and considers that events there are purely the internal affair of China". The statement was apparently issued after persuasion from Beijing.

The moves suggest that China has further evidence about rioters in Urumqi getting support from sources based in foreign countries. But reports from the northwestern city suggest that there was still a high level of fear and distrust among both the Ughyur and majority Han communities about a possible reoccurrence of violence.

Now lets see what Pak does .

China has also realized (like Pak) that short term tactical gains will lead to long term strategic disaster.

Terrorism by Islamic extremism is a problem for both Pakistan and China. The Uighur terrorists are connected to the Taliban and its operatives are trained mostly in Taliban camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Coalition Forces captured dozens of Uighurs terrorists during its battles against the Taliban in Afghanistan. If the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan deteriorates then Xinjiang is one of the next likely grounds for major Islamic Extremism so it is in China's interest to stabilize the region and cooperate with both Pakistan, Afghanistan and NATO forces.

On a side note, it is very likely that China will be sending troops to Afghanistan in the next year or two, Coalition Forces are in talk with China to get PLA involved.

And the irony is, most of the Taliban weapons are Chinese in origin.

Actually most are old soviet stock from the Soviet occupation and the remaining stockpile of former Soviet Republics. The majority of Aghanistan's military use Type-56s though, NATO bought it from China for the Afghans to use.

Well Urumgi is gateway to middle east and Africa through Pakistan. And this gateway will be more and more important in future. Pakistan and China has very low visa requirement policy, thats why Chinese are eager to know what going on in border markets. Where thousands of Pakistani and Chinese comes every week for trade. This unrest will not only hurt China, it will badly hurt Pakistan economically.

China Friendship Group to be dissolved with resignations

Turkish parliamentarians are continuing to resign from the Turkish-Chinese Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group in a bid to register their protest against the Chinese government's stance on the violence in Xinjiang, which is likely to result in dissolution of the group.

In December, all 316 of the deputies in the Turkish-Israeli friendship group, which was formerly the largest friendship group in Parliament, resigned from the group in protest over Israel's deadliest-ever air offensive into Gaza, closing that group.

Turkish parliamentarians are showing a similar reaction to the violent incidents taking place in the northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang, populated by ethnic Turkic Uighurs, where hundreds have been killed during riots in the past week.

The first resignation from the Turkish-Chinese friendship group came on Wednesday from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Mu deputy Seracettin Karayaz. Following him, 59 deputies from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) also resigned from the group.

The head of the group, AK Party Diyarbakr deputy hsan Arslan, has not resigned yet, but has said he finds the protests of his friends correct. I think these resignations reflect the reactions of the public and have the potential to become a deterring factor for China. I hope they do send a message to China, said Arslan.

AK Party Trabzon deputy Asm Aykan, who resigned from the group, sent his resignation to the Chinese Embassy in Ankara instead of sending it to Parliament. In his resignation statement, Aykan said: I protest your inhumane attitude, which can never comply with any universal law and humanity, on behalf of the residents of Trabzon, whom I represent, and the Turkish people and I resign from my membership in the Turkish-Chinese Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group.

AK Party Adana deputy Fato Gürkan also announced her resignation on Thursday, stating that she harshly condemns the Chinese government, which has taken no action to mitigate the violence and noted that killings are a shame for humanity.

All AK Party deputies in the group were reportedly thinking of resigning soon.

MHP parliamentary group chairman Oktay Vural also sent a statement to the Parliament administration noting that all MHP deputies in the group have resigned. Deputy chairman of the group Manisa deputy Ahmet Orhan, who accompanied President Abdullah Gül during his recent week-long visit to China was among the deputies who resigned from the group.
