Pakistan: Child Abuse At Madrassas

Clerics in Pakistani Madrassas are being accused of sexual abuse of male children. Their response is to issue death threats against the the minister responsible for revealing the allegations.

The BBC reports:

There were 500 complaints this year of abuse allegedly committed by clerics, Aamer Liaquat Hussain, a minister in the religious affairs department, said. That compares with 2,000 last year, but as yet there have been no successful prosecutions, Mr Hussain told the BBC.

Mr Hussain said he had received death threats from clerics, but that he had done his job and his conscience was clear. ... [T]he revelations have angered some Islamic leaders. At a parliamentary meeting this week, some demanded he apologise.

I've read about these accusations before, but now it sounds like something might actually be done about it. This would appear to be expected in a situation where religious leaders are given absolutely authority alongside little to know independent oversight. Who is in a position to question or challenge the actions of these clerics? They can threaten the lives of anyone who crosses them, and without fear of repercussions it seems.

I suspect that if the true extent of these atrocities is ever revealed, it will be the crime story of the century: Madrassas hit by sex abuse claims.

A Pakistani minister has revealed hundreds of cases of alleged child sex abuse at Islamic schools, or madrassas.

Boys escape from madrassa in chains

KARACHI: Police in Pakistan are searching for the principal of a religious school who kept young boys chained up and beat them daily to force them to study. Police raided the madrassa in the southern city of Karachi after 8-year-old Mohammad Ammar and 10-year-old Ahsan Mawia jumped from the roof to escape, still wearing their chains. One of the boys was bleeding profusely and there were visible marks of beating on their bodies, investigating police officer, Jahan Khan Niazi, said on Thursday. He said police raided the madrassa seeking to detain the principal on charges of keeping the boys in illegal detention. They beat us every day, kept us in chains and gave very little food to eat. We want to go home, Ammar, the younger boy, told a court hearing after which the boys were handed over to their family. Complaints about conditions in madrassas are widespread in Pakistan, where more than 12,000 religious schools provide free education, food and shelter to about a million children, most of them from poor families. The government launched a drive in 2003 to reform madrassas but this has altered due to opposition from hardline Islamists. reuters
