Shimla: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani yesterday said the decision to expel party veteran Jaswant Singh for his controversial book praising Mohammad Ali Jinnah was "painful but inevitable".

"Advaniji said that Jaswant Singh episode has been painful, but it was inevitable," senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said, while briefing reporters on Advani's address to the party's three-day introspection that ended here yesterday.

Jaswant Singh, who has held defence, finance and external affairs portfolios in the BJP-led governments, was on Wednesday expelled from the party for his book Jinnah: India-Partition-Independence, in which he has praised Pakistan's founder Jinnah.

Singh in his book has said that Jinnah was "demonised" in India, while part of the blame for the country's partition should also go to the country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Swaraj said Advani, is his speech, commented that "whatever he [Jaswant Singh] has written is against the party's core ideology".

Speaking on Sardar Patel, Advani said Jaswant Singh had "denigrated" a figure whose contribution in unifying India during his tenure as the home minister between August 1947 and December 1959 was a "super human action".

The pakistanis have no idea what Jaswant's Singh book is all about and they are simply getting excited because there are discussions about this book in India. If the pakistanis ever read this book, they will understand that there should not be pakistan in the first place.That is what Jaswant Singh's book is all about.His contention is that Jinnah is not a fundamentalist person as understood by many but a greedy man who used religion for his own personal ambitions.The book is about the evolution of Jinnah, from a staunch India born non practising muslim who was against the Khilafat movement (Mahatma Gandhi was the one who suppported it) to a greedy ambitious man who turned to the same Islamic religion (which he never practised in real life) for his political career in the process using the muslims as a scapegot for his ambitions. The contraversy in India is not about the the points made by Jaswant Singh but how he presented them in his book.

'The basic and structural fault in Jinnah's notion remains a rejection of his origins; of being an Indian, having been shaped by the soil of India, tempered in the heat of Indian experience'

The Problem with Jinnah was he never beleived in Islam himself but he used Islam to score personnel points against the Congress.Jinnah was miffed that more than him Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a practising Muslim has more respect in the Muslim community.The Congress ignored Jinnah because Jinnah unlike Maulana Azad never fought against the British and never went to Jail.Jinnah was more comfortable wearing suit and drinking whisky with his English friends rather than walking on the street and shouting slogans against the British.So it was at this point when both the Congress and Muslim community ignored Jinnah that he used Islamic separatism as a rallying point to sway the muslim public opinion away from Maulana Azad towards himself.Even Jinnah did not assume that pakistan would be a reality.For him the 'pakistan movement' is just a bargaining chip to be used to get more concessions for himself from the Congress leadership.

Jinnah's proposals are non-starter from the beginning.His demand that there should be seperate electorates for Hindus and Muslims are not even demands which should be on the table in the first place.Congress insisted and rightly so that religion is a personnel affair and it should not be a basis for dividing electorates and running the govt.Jinnah wanted just that.When Nehru did not agree with that demand, Jinnah and Muslim League goons started the Direct action day which resulted in riots.It was only then that Nehru was forced to accept partition.The Congress could have bought Jinnah and the Muslim League to their knees by using force and rejecting partition but Gandhi being a humanist was totally opposed to that.

Yes i do. I quotes i gave you are taken directly from the book.As i told, the pakistanis are simply getting excited because they are assuming by looking at the contraversy in India that the book validates their assumtions of Jinnah.Its not case.The boook makes the case that had Nehru rejected Jinnah's proposals and Gandhi allowed Patel to use force, pakistani could have been averted inspite of the Jinnah's demands because even in 1947 not every muslim was convinced about pakistan.Many muslims have infact stayed back in India.Jaswant Singh's observation at the end of the book is that Nehru should have called off Jinnah's bluff. The contraversy in India is not about these main points .Its about small details like Jaswant Singh's observation that Jinnah is secular and not a islamic fundamentalist and he used religion for his personnel political ambitions.

There were as much victims from Hindu and Sikh sides as they were from the Muslim side. But the riots themselves were started by the Muslim League goons when jinnah in the west and suhrawardy in east Pakistan instigated the Muslim League cadre to take over Hindu and Sikh Businesses as part of a plan to force Congress leadership to accept partition. The attacks on the train carrying Muslims to Pakistan happened only after the Sikhs and Hindus saw trains coming from Pakistan with dead bodies of Sikhs and Hindus. There is a tendency among a section of Muslims to start riots without thinking about the after effects and when the Hindu/Sikh side retaliates and the Muslims get beaten up, that retaliation itself is portrayed as yet another example of Hindu domination over Muslims without even thinking who started the riots in the first place.

Jinnah had tuberculosis in the early 1940s but he knew about his cancer only in the mid 40s when the Lahore declaration for seperate pakistan has already been passed and Islamic secessionism has already got momentum.If Jinnah has backtracked at that point of time, his political career and his name (even after his death) would have gone completely among the muslim masses which he himself has aroused in the name of religion.

There are lot of myths surrounding Jinnah in pakistan because Jinnah is everything what 'Islamic republic of pakistan' does not like.Many pakistanis might not know but Jinnah is only a second generation muslim convert. Jinnah's Grand Father Poonja Gokuldas is a staunch Hindu merchant from Gujarat.When Jinnah's father Jinnahbhai Gokuldas wanted to convert to Islam for business reasons, he choosed Shia Islam rather than Sunni Islam because he did not like the fundamentalism sweeping the sunni islam in those days.Jinnah's mother Mithibai remained Hindu until her death.Not suprisingly , Jinnah born in such a family never was fully "islamised".His Hindu origins and ancestry was primary reason why Jinnah until 1930s was a staunch supporter of Hindu-Muslim unity.Until the 1930s Jinnah was the deciple of the Hindu Scholar and Congress leader Gopala Krishna Gokhale.It was only when Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who unlike Jinnah was a practising Muslim garnered more support from the muslim community and the Congress leadership started courting Maulana Azad that Jinnah in order to upstage Maulana Azad embraced even more stringent Islamic militancy proposed by Chaudhary Rahmat Ali.That Jinnah never beleived that pakistan would become a reality can be gauged from the fact that even when it became clear that India would be divided and an independent pakistan will emerge, Still Jinnah personally requested Prime Minister Nehru not to sell his house in Mumbai and that he will eventually be back and stay in his ancestral house in Mumbai.

One of the best biography of Jinnah is Khan Abdul Wali Khan's book "Facts are Facts". This book explores in detail about Jinnah's origins and his role in partition.
