WASHINGTON: The Obama administration has appointed a woman of Kashmiri-origin, Farah Pandith, as Americas special representative to the Muslim world.
Her appointment, announced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday afternoon, however, has raised eyebrows in India.
Ms Pandiths task will be to advise Secretary Clinton on dealing with Muslim communities around the world, in keeping with the Obama administrations efforts to improve relations with the Muslim world.
Ms Pandiths family is from Sopore, a town in Indian occupied Kashmir known for its strong support to the demand for independence. Sopore is also home to Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and thousands of young men fighting the Indian occupation forces.
Ms Pandith left Sopore for the US with her parents when she was five. State Department Spokesman Ian Kelly, when asked to confirm the appointment, said: Shes actually a friend of mine. I worked with her very closely in the European Bureau, Farah Pandith. She was a special adviser for outreach to Muslim communities in Europe. The secretary has appointed her to more of a global role.
Mr Kelly was unclear about when Secretary Clinton tapped Ms Pandith, saying he believed it was made within the past few days.
When asked why the post had not been made public, Mr Kelly said an announcement was sent out to the State Department community. However, he promised to disseminate more information about the appointment.
During his inaugural speech, President Barack Obama pledged to seek a new way forward with the Muslim world based on mutual interest and respect, after eight years of tense relations with the Muslim world under former president Bush.
Earlier this month during speech to the Muslim world in Cairo, Mr Obama once again said he would try to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect.
Ms Pandiths mother is a doctor and the family has a home in Boston but Farah Pandith has been living in Washington since her previous appointment in the Bush administration.
