PORT KLANG: Today was a historic day for Malaysia with the arrival of the first of two Scorpene submarines for the Royal Malaysian Navy.
Describing the acquisition of the vessels as the single biggest defence procurement to date, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin called on the RMN to safeguard the integrity and sovereignty of the country.
I hope you will have better avenues to protect the nation from threats, now that you are equipped with such expensive assets that are a force-multiplier.
The submarine purchase has no doubt transformed the armed forces, and the RMN particularly, into a formidable force that is comparable with other navies, said the king, who is also supreme commander of the Armed Forces.
Malaysia's first submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman docked at Port Klang after its arrival this morning.
His majesty applauded the RMN officers and men who had successfully completed their four years of stringent training in France, sacrificing their family lives and returning home safely with the submarine despite rough seas.
I congratulate and am proud of you men whom I believe have the dedication and capability to live up to the billing of `sedia berkorban (ready to sacrifice). I pray to the Almighty that you will be empowered with the strength and courage to serve.
As the pioneer submarine crew, it is my hope that you keep up the excellent work on a national project as important as this, he said in his speech at the welcoming ceremony of KD Tunku Abdul Rahman at the National Hydrography Centre in Pulau Indah.
Present were Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also the RMNs captain-in-chief, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other top brass.
The second submarine, KD Tun Razak, is expected home later this year.
The Prime Ministers-class submarines were procured in 2002 from a consortium comprising Armaris of France and Navantia of Spain, under a RM3.4 billion package.
KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, with a crew of 32 officers and men commandered by Cdr Zulhelmy Ithnain, left Toulon, France on July 11 on its 54-day journey with stopovers in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Djibouti and Cochin (India).
It will sail to the Lumut RMN base on Saturday for a three-day stopover before its crew take a break for Hari Raya Puasa. It will then proceed to its home base at Teluk Sepanggar in Sabah.
Later at a Press conference, Ahmad Zahid said the submarines, which were equipped with sophisticated integrated systems, required very high maintenance costs.
He added that KD Tunku Abdul Rahman and its crew would undergo tropical water training next month.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak entering the KD Tun Abdul Razak.
Asked on the possible procurement of more submarines, Ahmad Zahid said it depended on budgetary allocations which have been trimmed owing to the global economic downturn.
Even for the purchase of these two submarines, we had planned it over 25 years ago during the Fifth Malaysia Plan. It's now the Ninth Malaysia Plan. Hopefully, we will be able to buy more submarines during the 13th or 14th Malaysia Plans, he said.
Ahmad Zahid added that in view of the operational difficulty, the sailing allowance of submarines would be reviewed from time to time.
At yesterdays ceremony, Tuanku Mizan also launched 30 sen and 50 sen commemorative stamps and first-day covers of KD Tunku Abdul Rahman.
He later toured the submarine and viewed a submarine gallery, displaying photographs of the crew training and vessel construction at Cherbourg (France) and Cartagena (Spain), at the hydrography centre.

If you are so concerned about 70% population homeless, and poverty an roads filled with cows and dung then why only stop at submarines? Submarines cost only a fraction of money, stop having a military.
Like you said your malaysia is backward, so why waste money on defence expenditure instead of feeding your population? BTW wasnt a malaysian model sentenced to b whipped for drinking alchohol?

Of course, they didnt have submarines in those times. You can have 100,000 men armed with spears, bows and arrows and technically you can have an army. You are just 500 years too late thats all.

Scorpene Attack Submarine KD TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN
The Scorpene attack submarine is equipped with six bow-located 21in torpedo tubes providing salvo launch capability.
1,500 ton Scorpene has a length of 66.4m. The two vessels are powered by four diesel generators providing more than 2,500kW using GM synchronous motors with permanent magnets.
Scorpene has a hull-mounted medium-frequency active / passive sonar. The vessels are armed with WASS (Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subaquei) Black Shark heavyweight torpedoes.
The Black Shark is a dual purpose, wire-guided torpedo which is fitted with Astra active / passive acoustic head and a multi-target guidance and control unit incorporating a counter-countermeasures system. It has an electrical propulsion system based on a silver oxide and aluminium battery.
The six torpedo tubes will be capable of firing SM-39 Exocet anti-ship missiles, which have a range of 50km. The vessels will be equipped with EDO Reconnaissance Systems AR-900 electronic support measures/direction-finding (ESM/DF) system.
Scorpene is equipped with six bow-located 21in torpedo tubes providing salvo launch capability. Positive discharge launching is by an air turbine pump.
Handling and loading of weapons is automated."The submarine's weapons include anti-ship and anti-submarine torpedoes and anti-surface missiles. 18 torpedoes and missiles or 30 mines can be carried by the Scorpene attack submarine. The handling and loading of weapons is automated.
SUBTICS COMBAT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
The SUBTICS combat management system, with up to six multifunction common consoles and a centrally situated tactical table, is collocated with the platform-control facilities.
The combat management system is composed of a command and tactical data handling system, a weapon control system and an integrated suite of acoustic sensors with an interface to a set of air surface detection sensors and to the integrated navigation system. The system can also download data from external sources.
The integrated navigation system combines data from global positioning systems, the log, depth measurement and the ship's trim / list monitoring system. The Scorpene monitors the environment including seawater density and temperature and the submarine's own noise signature.

Conventional diesel-electric, sounds like. Not AIP.

Hello Han,

At least TLDM can sharpen her ASW skills further.

bought were of similar type with RSN Subs Italian made....
So what's next for TDM...

LUMUT: The submarine KD Tun Razak will begin its journey home on Jan 26 and arrive here two months later.
Royal Malaysian Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar said the country's second submarine was being put through second phase trials by its Spanish manufacturer, Navatia, in the waters off Cartagena naval base.
"The KD Tun Razak is scheduled to be handed over officially to the Royal Malaysian Navy on Oct 25 and begin its journey home on Jan 26, " he said after the welcoming ceremony for the country's first submarine, KD Tunku Abdul Rahman at the RMN base here on Saturday.
The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, and the Raja DiHilir Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, were present at the ceremony, which was also attended by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Defence Forces chief General Tan Sri Azizan Ariffin.
Aziz said KD Tunku Abdul Rahman would be at the Lumut naval base until Thursday before heading off to Sabah. It will arrive at the naval base in Kota Kinabalu at Sepanggar Bay on Sept 17.
The Sabah government plans a brief welcoming ceremony for the submarine and its crew .
KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, under the command of Commander Zulhelmy Ithnain, arrived at the National Hydrography Centre at Pulau Indah in Selangor on Thursday after a 55-day journey from Toulon, France, where it was built. -- Bernama

Yeap no doubt its quite safe, 2 years ago n before, but situation with Indonesia according to my sources, is building up, from good to bad, ease to tense. Things seems normal for Malaysians because Media are discourage from stirring the pot, partially due to large amount of Indonesian Immigrants here.
Whatever it is, Peace and Safe doesnt mean we should neglect the development of our Armed forces. We should always be prepared.

What MAL-INDO relationship ?
if you mean both bitching each other, its always like that between us
it is one way around. especially for your damn media. they bash everything about malaysia, even the issue that malaysians dont event know. they even pissed when we call them Indon, they want us to call them Indo. i dont even care if they call our country Malays or Malay. but its ok for them to call other countries with weird name like Korsel (Korea Selatan/South Korea), Korut (Korea Utara/North Korea) or Jepang.

oh 1 more thing, dont forget Spratly Islands.
Indon will not back off this time. either our goverment start beef up our military or we are the one who gonna back off. about Spratly, we can give Viet, Pilipinos and Brunei a slap but we cant have a chance against PLAN. at least Najib can throw Mahatirism and start using USA card. potentially, we can offer USA many more than what our southern neighbour **ehem ehem** can offer

there were no confirmation of black shark being purchased for the RMN scorpene.
as far as the UN register go and other sources, the black shark is not in RMN inventory.
even SISPRI only noted it as an unconfirmed possibilities, and non was ever reported delivered.
only 4 sub launch exocet was delivered this year according to malaysia 2009 UN arms register.
a recent news report in singapore with regards to the introduction of singapore AIP submarine, also took particular note of the absence of torpedos in malaysia scorpene.
