LUCKNOW: An unemployed man sliced his tongue at a temple in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad town as an offering to appease the Hindu god Shiva and "get
blessed with a job", police said on Tuesday.
Manoj Kumar Hela, a resident of T.P. Nagar locality in Allahabad, about 200 km from here, went to a temple on Monday evening, cut his tongue with a razor blade and offered it to the shivling, a symbol of Lord Shiva.
"Writhing in pain and bleeding profusely, Hela was spotted by devotees in the temple who informed us about the incident," police inspector Raghuraj Gautam said.
"With the help of the locals, we rushed Hela to a nearby private hospital, where the doctors said the man could develop speech problems after losing his tongue. Hela is out of danger now but is still in hospital," the official said.
Hela, 32, used to work on an ad-hoc basis as a sanitary worker in a hospital in Chitrakoot district but he lost his job a couple of months ago, police said.
"Being the sole bread-winner of his family, comprising three daughters, parents and his wife, Hela was mentally very upset ever since he lost the job," said Gautam.
Hela's wife Hiramani told police officials that her husband left home on Monday evening, saying he would do anything "to appease Bholenath (Lord Shiva) to get blessed with a new job".
