Indian Mars Mission Gets Final Approval

August 06, 2012

With NASAs Mars Science Laboratory having just touched down at Gale Crater on Mars, the Indian government now has given the final green light for its first orbiter mission to the red planet in November 2013.

In December 2011, Indias Space Commission gave its approval for the project, which is estimated to cost around 4.5 billion rupees ($80.7 million). The government has allocated 1.25 billion rupees for the initial phase of the mission for Indias current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2013.

The project, which comes after Indias Chandrayaan mission to the Moon, envisages putting a spacecraft in Mars orbit to study its atmosphere. The spacecraft will be boosted by a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which was also used for Chandrayaan-1.

The spacecraft will have a scientific payload of 25 kilograms [55 lb.] and is proposed to be placed in an orbit of 500 x 80,000 kilometers around the planet, according to a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Indias Mars orbiter is expected to be launched from Sriharikota in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh and will take nearly 300 days to reach Martian orbit. The mission is currently slated to carry nine scientific experiments, but that number could be reduced by weight considerations, the official says.

The tentative scientific objective for the Mars mission will be to focus on life, climate, geology, origin, evolution and sustainability of life on the planet, according to ISRO.

ISRO officials say a significant amount of work on the mission has been completed and scientific payloads have been short-listed.

India will be the sixth country to launch a mission to Mars after the U.S., Russia, Europe, Japan and China. China made an attempt to launch a satellite to Mars in November 2011, but the spacecraft was unable to escape Earths gravity and crashed into the Pacific Ocean in January.

If the ISRO fails to launch the Mars Mission next year, other launch opportunities are available in 2016 and 2018.

Pathankot Strike
8 F-86Fs of No 19 Squadron led by Squadron Leader Sajjad Haider struck Pathankot airfield. With carefully positioned dives and selecting each individual aircraft in their protected pens for their strafing attacks, the strike elements completed a textbook operation against Pathankot. Wing Commander M G Tawab, flying one of the two Sabres as tied escorts overhead, counted 14 wrecks burning on the airfield. Among the aircraft destroyed on the ground were nearly all of the IAFs Soviet-supplied Mig-21s till then received, none of which were seen again during the War.

Pakis calling others 'incompetant' is quite a irony and if we are talking about space exploration, the Pakis should not even be in this thread in the first place. The Pakis can neither design a simple thing as a satellite, forget about launching it on their own.Their ONLY functional satellite presently is a second rate communication satellite Paksat-1R which is designed, built, launched and even funded by the Chinese. Before learning anything, the Pakis need to learn a little humility and their pathetic place in the pecking order of things.

India on the other hand not only designs and launches its own satellites, it is also active in space exploration by sending probe to moon. The next step obviously is to send a probe to mars and get trained for manned space missions.

afghanistan let alone australia).
anyway its nice step forward long overdue.
and pakis should stfu... india has been sending satellites of countries like japan, germany, swiss etc into orbit
for some time now.
pakis cant even develop their own sateliite so making smart arse jokes about something which is light years away from u
is not wise.

And who said its going to happen this year ? They are aiming for 2013 which may or may not be ambitious but 2016 is still a good date. The point is not whether they will launch in end of 2013 or in 2016.The point is it got a go ahead for that project from the govt which itself is a big thing. The latter part of this decade seems to be an interesting period for Indian space programme. The launching of a Indian Vyomanaut into space will also happen during that period.

What BS ? The Pakis are begging India for electricity and begging world bank to provide technical assistance and funding for infrastructure to import that electricity since they are not technically capable and dont have money to fund themselves.

http://asian-power.com/regulation/more-news/pakistan-asks-wb-weigh-power-import-india

Pakistan asks WB to weigh up power import from India

"Pakistan had decided in April that it would import up to 500 megawatts of electricity from India with the World Bank agreeing to fund construction of the required infrastructure.

The World Banks initiative comes in light of the request made by Pakistan to provide technical assistance to conduct a pre-feasibility study regarding the import of power and exploring interconnection options between the power systems of both nations."

Thats not true, Bun ! ISRO has consistently delivered what it was asked for with a relatively lesser budget than its contemporaries else where. Delays with some of the projects like crogenic engines for example are natural since India is developing these technologies associated with it for the very first time.

DRDO - yes, they are a complacent bunch who think staying two steps ahead of phuckistan means they are doing a good job.

ISRO on the other hand is a credible organisation. Its a miracle that they are so efficient inspite of the pathetic pay they get.
