Chinas Tianhe-2 Supercomputer Takes No. 1 Ranking on 41st TOP500 List

MANNHEIM, Germany; BERKELEY, Calif.; and KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--Tianhe-2, a supercomputer developed by Chinas National University of Defense Technology, is the worlds new No. 1 system with a performance of 33.86 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark, according to the 41stedition of the twice-yearlyTOP500 list of the worlds most powerful supercomputers. The list was announced June 17 during the opening session of the 2013 International Supercomputing Conference in Leipzig, Germany.

Tianhe-2, or Milky Way-2, will be deployed at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzho, China, by the end of the year. The surprise appearance of Tianhe-2, two years ahead of the expected deployment, marks Chinas first return to the No. 1 position since November 2010, when Tianhe-1A was the top system. Tianhe-2 has 16,000 nodes, each with two Intel Xeon IvyBridge processors and three Xeon Phi processors for a combined total of 3,120,000 computing cores.

Titan, a Cray XK7 system installed at the U.S. Department of Energys (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory and previously the No. 1 system, is now ranked No. 2. Titan achieved 17.59 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark using 261,632 of its NVIDIA K20x accelerator cores. Titan is one of the most energy efficient systems on the list, consuming a total of 8.21 MW and delivering 2,143 Mflops/W.

Sequoia, an IBM BlueGene/Q system installed at DOEs Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, also dropped one position and is now the No. 3 system. Sequoia was first delivered in 2011 and has achieved 17.17 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark using 1,572,864 cores. Sequoia is also one of the most energy efficient systems on the list, consuming a total of 7.84 MW and delivering 2,031.6 Mflops/W.

Fujitsus K computer installed at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) in Kobe, Japan, is now the No. 4 system with a performance of 10.51 Pflop/s on the Linpack benchmark using 705,024 SPARC64 processing cores

A second BlueGene/Q system, Mira, installed at Argonne National Laboratory is at No. 5 with 8.59 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark using 786,432 cores.

Rounding out the Top 10 are the upgraded Stampede at the Texas Advanced Computing Center of the University of Texas, Austin; JUQUEEN at the Forschungszentrum Juelich in Germany (and the most powerful system in Europe); an IBM BlueGene/Q system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; SuperMUC, an IBM iDataplex system installed at Leibniz Rechenzentrum in Germany; and Tianhe-1A at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, China.

According to TOP500 Editor Jack Dongarra, who toured the Tianhe-2 development facility in May, the system is noteworthy in a number of aspects. Most of the features of the system were developed in China, and they are only using Intel for the main compute part. That is, the interconnect, operating system, front-end processors and software are mainly Chinese, Dongarra said.

Other highlights from the June 2013 TOP500 List, which can be found at www.top500.org, include:

There are 26 systems with performance greater than a petaflop/s, up from 23 six months ago.
The new No. 1 system, Tianhe-2, and the No. 6 system, Stampede, are using Intel Xeon Phi processors to speed up their computational rate. The No. 2 system, Titan, and the No. 10 system, Tianhe-1A, are using NVIDIA GPUs to accelerate computation.
A total of 54 systems on the list are using accelerator/co-processor technology, down from 62 in November 2012. Thirty-nine of these use NVIDIA chips, three use ATI Radeon, and eleven systems use Intel MIC technology (Xeon Phi).
The number of systems installed in China has now stabilized at 66, with 72 and 68 on the last two lists. As a nation, China now holds the No. 2 position as a user of HPC, ahead of Japan, UK, France, and Germany. Due to Tianhe-2, China has also taken the No. 2 position in the performance share, ahead of Japan.
Intel continues to provide the processors for the largest share (80.4 percent) of TOP500 systems.
Eighty-eight percent of the systems use processors with six or more cores, and 67 percent with eight or more cores.
IBMs BlueGene/Q is still the most popular system in the TOP10 with four entries, including No. 3, 5, 7, and 8.
The entry level on the list moved up to the 96.6 teraflop/s mark on the Linpack benchmark, compared to 76.5 Tflop/s six months ago.
The last system on the newest list was listed at position 322 in the previous TOP500 just six months ago.
Total combined performance of all 500 systems has grown to 223 Pflop/s, compared to 162 Pflop/s six months ago and 123 Pflop/s one year ago.
Geographical observations

The U.S. is clearly the leading consumer of HPC systems, with 252 of the 500 systems (250 last time). The European share (112 systems 105 last time) is still lower than the Asian share (119 systems 123 last time).
Dominant countries in Asia are China with 66 systems (down from 72) and Japan with 30 systems (down from 32).
In Europe, UK, France, and Germany, are almost equal with 29, 23, and 19 respectively.
About the TOP500 ListThe first version of what became todays TOP500 list started as an exercise for a small conference in Germany in June 1993. Out of curiosity, the authors decided to revisit the list in November 1993 to see how things had changed. About that time they realized they might be on to something and decided to continue compiling the list, which is now a much-anticipated, much-watched and much-debated twice-yearly event.

The TOP500 list is compiled by Hans Meuer of the University of Mannheim, Germany; Erich Strohmaier and Horst Simon of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; and Jack Dongarra of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

interesting analysis that Tianhe-2 is almost 13x more powerful than all indian supercomputers combined

It shows how advanced indian technology is ... ohhh wait, actually all indian supercomputers are made by foreigners ... too bad [linked image]

When China actually produces itself own chips for its supercomputer, then they'll have more respect. Right now, they're amassing processors, and tbh that isn't all that impressive.

China is desperate to use its own chips, but they know they cannot compete.

In fact, that's a but unfair, as the Chinese do have talent, it's just that the Chinese have a disproportionate view of themselves.

hmmm ..

June 23 2013, 6:53 AM

I checked also that all British supercomputers listed are all made by "non British" and all use "non British" CPU as well.

On the other hand, at least one of China supercomputers does use China' designed CPU and manufactured in China as well. It is ranked No. 33. (Sunway Blue Light)

http://www.top500.org/system/177447

Site: National Supercomputing Center in Jinan
Manufacturer: National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology
Cores: 137,200
Linpack Performance (Rmax) 795.9 TFlop/s
Theoretical Peak (Rpeak) 1,070.2 TFlop/s
Power: 1,074.00 kW
Memory: 139,264 GB
Interconnect: Infiniband QDR
Operating System: Linux

in fact only 2 British owned supercomputer (made and designed by "non-British") have better performance than Sunway, and the rest (27) have worse performance than Sunway

We're not in the race, hence your point is invalid. China puts everything it has into chest beating, that's all it is good at.

Big projects, because they have masses of money and man power, but couldn't care less about repairing fragile bridges and rural schools which then collapse and kill their occupants.

The CPU race is all about how many GPUs you can strap to a motherboard. I.E all about money.

This is all CCP propaganda. Chinamen have no super computer. The biggest one they have exported from India to China months back so it is technically India's computer on top. But they make the best kungpao chicken though that Indians just can't make.

What I find interesting about Tianhe-2, is that it seems to be a step backwards in terms of computing efficiency as it comes in at 398th when the list is sorted by Rmax/cores (processor and accelerator) with a ratio of 5.8 (gigaflops/s per core)...

Top500-41.png

I am wondering how much of the inefficiency is due to the fact that this is the first time Chinese computer scientists have attempted to handle the interconnect (and most other aspects outside of the main processing cores) with indigenous technology...
"Most of the features of the system were developed in China, and they are only using Intel for the main compute part. That is, the interconnect, operating system, front-end processors and software are mainly Chinese, Dongarra said.
For those of you interested in performing your own analysis...

Ummmm...actually a Canadian company is the first company in the world to sell and ship commercially viable quantum computers (at least according to Google and LM), which will likely dominate this list in the 2020s and beyond.

The above fact combined with the mediocre performance figures for Tianhe-2 would seem to indicate that China is far more useless and backward than Canada when it comes to advanced computer technology (which is sad considering China has 50x the population of Canada). Of course this is to be expected since for decades now China's best and brightest minds leave never to return...

simple as that!

Canada is too useless and backward in DDG, MBT,5G JET,Space station ,nuclear subs ( oh no, importing 2nd hand Sub from Briton but crashed before arriving), things!

simple as that!

Canada is too useless and backward in almost everything in defence industry, the best you can do it is to be a lapdog for

powerful nations, now it's USA, but in future, maybe China it's your destiny!

Well Nicolas I suppose that to a drooling simpleton, everything is as simple as that...but alas as I pointed out it appears that China is far behind even more useless and backward than Canada in terms of building efficient supercomputers...which I suppose makes China the world leader in uselessness and backwardness in a computing context.

I am glad Nicolas that you have taken the time and highlighted the fact that 30M Canadians are capable of producing more advanced and efficient technology than 1.6B Chinese can, kudos to you for being secure enough to admit the shortcomings of your (adopted) nationality (since you don't actually live anywhere near China).

Oh and Nicolas...

When you have billions of people, someone has to have a brain! If China had say 400 million or so people as the EU or US does, it wouldn't stand a chance. Nationalism is all they have, because individually they're about as bad as your regular Indian...Ok, perhaps not quite that bad. happy.gif

Chinese only excel in things they can study, IQ included. You only have to look at how Chinese study music to see why their collective IQ on paper is so large.

Western countries don't tend to study for tests such as IQ test; just look at real intellectual tests like Chess...Where are the top Chinese chess players?

1.35 Billion people and your highest is 16th! And believe me, the Chinese play a great deal!

Nicolas, you think about riding other men's cocks frequently? ...perhaps talk to Gorgg, he's seems very interested in that sort of thing.

As for Canada's accomplishments in space exploration, they stand on their own merits, they have no need of anyone to defend them as they are still far superior to anything China has managed.

I hate getting all "patriotic" in threads these days, but I would say only a decade ago was China building jets comparable to our old Arrow that was $hit canned after prototype back in the 50's, and that was tiny insignificant Canada building a lot from scratch compared to Chinas dumbed down copy/paste of Russian designs.

Now if you would excuse me... wink.gif

Unlike China who would kill a million of its own people to get those 5G codes from the US!

And the UK and Canada want to send someone into space for what reason? The UK as at the very forefront of space technologies, it just doesn't produce technologies or achievements to show off to the rest of the world.

Only one nation has produced a 5th generation fighter jet though. The UK though a small partner is heavily involved in the JSF and was the major partner in the Eurofighter, both of which are far in advance of any Chinese jet even at prototype stage. With the laughable record of past Chinese fighters this is unlikely to change with cheap knock offs like the J-20 and J-31. Sorry!
