A new film about Nazi-Soviet links

BEING burnt in effigy on the streets of Moscow by nationalist hoodlums must count as a kind of Oscar if you are a Latvian filmmaker whose aim is to expose modern Russia's blindness to the criminal history of the Soviet Union. The ire of Young Russia's protest outside the Latvian embassy this week was directed at Edvins Snore, whose film “Soviet Story” is the most powerful antidote yet to the sanitisation of the past.

The film is gripping, audacious and uncompromising. Though it starts by telling the story of the murder of 7m Ukrainians in 1933, it is no mere catalogue of atrocities. The main aim of the film is to show the close connections—philosophical, political and organisational—between the Nazi and Soviet systems.

AP

Hot new filmmakerAs Françoise Thom (one of many anti-communist luminaries appearing in the film) puts it: “Nazism was based on false biology; Marxism was based on false sociology”. The Marxist dream of the “new man”, for example, mirrored the Nazi idea of racial superiority. The Nazis murdered chiefly on racial grounds, while the Soviets concentrated on class. But mass murder is mass murder.

Those who keep a soft spot for Marxism may flinch to hear that the sage of Highgate referred to backward societies as Völkerabfälle (racial trash) who must “perish in the revolutionary holocaust”. Or that the Nazi party in its early days idolised Lenin (Josef Goebbels said he was second only to Adolf Hitler in greatness).

Perhaps the best sequence in the film shows pairs of posters using almost identical designs: muscular workers strike heroic attitudes in support of the party and the state, blonde little girls beam, fists smash enemies, hammers break chains. Without the swastika and hammer and sickle as clues, it would be hard to know which is which.

The illustration of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact is compelling: Soviet radio transmitters guided German bombers in their attacks on Poland. A Soviet naval base near Murmansk helped the Nazi attack on Norway. The Soviet secret police helped train the Gestapo and discussed how to deal with the “Jewish question” in occupied Poland.

Cooperation was based on a written agreement—complete with the signature of Lavrenty Beria, head of the notorious NKVD—which is shown in the film. “The NKVD will propose to the Soviet Government a programme to reduce the participation of Jews in state bodies and to prohibit Jews and Jewish offspring of mixed marriages from the areas of culture and education”, reads a final, chilling sentence. Russia says the document is a fake.

Powerful archival footage shows Red Army officers drinking toasts with their counterparts from the SS in Berlin in December 1939. In 1940, the Soviet Union had become a huge supplier of grain and oil to the Nazi war machine, while it encouraged the Communist parties of western Europe to sabotage the anti-Nazi resistance.

“It is comforting to see Parisian workers talking to German soldiers as friends”, a French communist publication gloated in July 1940. Vyacheslav Molotov, who was then the Soviet Union's foreign minister, called fighting Nazism a “crime”. Along with similar pronouncements, that was published in every Soviet newspaper; such pages were hurriedly removed after Hitler's treachery.

Something pretty similar happened in the West. Nazi war criminals are reviled; their Soviet counterparts are honoured veterans to this day. Any attempt to bring them to justice prompts angry protests from Russia. “Hands Off Our Granddads”, was the slogan chanted by the protestors from Young Russia. A better question might be, “What exactly happened?”

Mr Snore and his sponsors in the European Parliament have produced a sharply provocative work. Its tone, technique and composition may be open to criticism. But those who want to ban it should try refuting it first.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

the soviets started planning the invasion of Germany in 1937. All friendly gestures towards the Germans were to buy time. Stalin planned to invade the Reich somtime in the 1940's. Hitler beat him to the punch. Its funny how the USSR, a nation with almost no roads, was out building trucks only fit to drive on highways in 1935. Clearly, the intent was to drive them over German roads. For every memo praising Germany there were secret soviet general staff papers planning the invasion of Germany.

I remind you the British and Americans were kissing Hitlers ass up until 1939 too.

To say that the Communists historically have been violent people is true. To say that their ideals were trash, now that is pure bull sh*t. Americans in general can not understand what it means to have a friend, or a family, or a neighbor. Most Western Societies today are turning into SOCIAL GARBAGE. Whereas the Nazis and Communists tried to instill some kind of substance in people, the west just LOVES to degenerate themselves after all those centuries they thrived as colonialists. How can you say that in a world with dwindling resources, booming population, spiraling unemployment, continual break down of the fabric of society that we do not need more socialist ideals in our society.

Whereas the Nazis and Communists tried to instill some kind of substance in people,

You do realize that you just compared your role models to the worst plague on humanity in a hundred years, don't you. If by brotherly cooperation and social fabric you mean killing millions of your own citizens, and by neighborly love you mean love to rule over your neighbors, then by all means, let the comparison role on.

The quote system is foolproof

my sole problem with soviet basher is this. I make no excuses for Stalin and 90% of Russians today see him for what he really was, this includes Putin who has overseen the building of many memorials to Stalins victims. The problem is that the Soviet Union existed for decades after the death of Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union of the mid 50's, the 60's, 70 and 80's was a very different place of the Soviet Union of Joseph Stalin and it is incorrect to paint those 40 years with the same brush as the Stalin years.

Communism has as much to do with killing people as Capitalism does. Do not forget, that Capitalism was responsible for enslaving millions of people and forcing them into back breaking labor, it is also today responsible for the continual destruction of natural resources in Brazilian rainforests and the sponsoring of killings in Mynamar all in the name of profit (just to name a few). The idea of Communism was not to kill millions of people, that was mainly the role of Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot.

What people forget is that before Communism, the entire Russian Empire was a nation full of wage-slavery, largely uneducated and grossly paralyzed from upward mobility. Thanks to the Soviet Experiment, 300million people were given access to the finest Education and Healthcare possible, a concept that was absolutely obscene just 50years prior. Just because the European imperialists managed to build their nations at the expense of others does not mean other non-european nations have the same opportunity. As we see today, Cuba is the only Communist nation in Latin America, and its acheivements in the fields of culture, education, and medicine are far higher than those Capitalist nations which the West continuously praises (Chile, Mexico, Panama).

Communsim is not the best system for the West as we have a highly advanced freemarket and legal systems (plus, many socialist concepts such as public education and public healthcare). However, where Communists gained control of the country they did so because communism was light years better than the authocratic dicatorships they would have had instead.

Oh, and by the way, we really see that there is no such thing as free competitive enterprise in the fields of high tech industry. Companies like Boeing are continuously seeking expensive subsidaries because the market does not see air travel as profitable. The Greatest Capitalist nation on Earth, the USA, adopts many socialy conscious programs of subsidiizing certain industries just so we can have jobs and stay ahead of the competition. Capitalist nations should embrace many communist ideals, a hybrid of the two systems can do marvels for civilization.

You are right Irkut according to some reacent German and Russian publishments,Zhukov proposed a
plan for premtive strike on Germany, but Stalin bolived that Ussr was not strong enugh to deal with Germany allone, preticulary ween France was defeated and Britain on her Knees and isolated.....
so Stalin also hopped that USA would enter and at least have a formidable second front before he
entererd in a War.He was playing a sneaky game that costed millions of death on both sides.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remeber the old Lenin saying:Ussr is destined to become tons of Red flags, but no real socialism
unless Germany leads the way and becommes a ally of Ussr.........

Altough you are right in your statmant above IRKUT,ur cant denie this fact.........

On the other hand,Hitlers stupidity to invade USSR ween Germany wasent eavn fully prepared(yet allone mobilised speaks for its self)

ofcourse having an army geared for offensive though isn`t nesscearily an evidence that one is planning an attack it could also mean that if attcked one is planning to go onto the offensive but staling big parachute armies and light tanks fit for Western Europes roads are atleast indications that was suspicious enough for Germany whether Stalin planned an attack or not on Germany he did incorporate the baltic states and parts of Romania in 1940 scaring Hitler even more since he came close to the Romanian oil fields

The Federal Reserve Scam!
