The Telegraph: French Army falling apart

The Conquerors (Turkey)

Most of France's tanks, helicopters and jet fighters are unusable and its defence apparatus is on the verge of "falling apart", it has emerged.

According to confidential defence documents leaked to the French press, less than half of France's Leclerc tanks – 142 out of 346 – are operational and even these regularly break down.

Less than half of its Puma helicopters, 37 per cent of its Lynx choppers and 33 per cent of its Super Frelon models – built 40 years ago – are in a fit state to fly, according to documents seen by Le Parisien newspaper.

Two thirds of France's Mirage F1 reconnaissance jets are unusable at present.

According to army officials, the precarious state of France's defence equipment almost led to catastrophe in April, when French special forces rescued the passengers and crew of a luxury yacht held by pirates off the Somali coast.

Although ultimately a success, the rescue operation nearly foundered at an early stage, when two of the frigates carrying troops suffered engine failure, and a launch laden with special forces' equipment sunk under its weight.

Later, an Atlantic 2 jet tracking the pirates above Somali territory suffered engine failure and had to make an emergency landing in Yemen.

France is increasing it's military budget to 6% of national GDP the Leclerc tank is one of the most advance tanks in the world which makes up the backbone of the French armoured forces an d in the Rafalle fighter they have one of the most modern fighter aircraft in service which makes up the backbone of the French airforce along with the Mirage 2000 ... yes the French have some units with aging hardware ... most countries do ... but the French are in the middle of regrouping their forces

Is 6% of national GDP valid figure? if that is true, it would be an impressive number. I would think from 2.6 to 6 is a big jump and considering that US fighting several wars has even less ratio forces me to question its validity.

Other items on the French list of proposals involve calling upon all EU countries to increase spending on defence to meet a new target of perhaps 6% of Gross Domestic Product.

It seems to me just show but we will see.

Right now, France can't afford (politically) to spend 6% of its GDP on its military. There's a reason why they are cutting back every program; i.e. Leclerc, FREMM, PA2 etc.

Heck,if all Eu countrys would spend 6% that would dwarf US military budegt,,,,Sorry but that wont happen......not yet, unless a treath emerges,,,,,

Oh by the way Germany along whit some other Eu Nations is starting to work again on Horten XXI type of planes -----Flying wing... PROJECT VELA.....
Some of those should be used as civil transport others on Military alpications.........
VELA 2 looks cool to me,,,,,where Vela 1 is just a Transport Flying wing!
