Ortaköy (literally Middle Village in Turkish) is a neighbourhood, formerly a small village, within the Beşiktaş district of Constantinople, located in the middle of the European bank of the Bosphorus.

In their 800 years of history how come the don't show a Turdish build city that is "exotic" and "cosmopolitan"?
Cause they got NONE and they are INCAPABLE of creating one... they can only destroy or reduce to trashlands the creation of others at best...

No wonder why there is NO term as "Turdish civilization" ....

Having lived and worked in Istanbul, I can really say it's one of the very best places to be in Europe when you are between let's say 18 and 45, with Berlin and London. 24/7 entertainment (concerts, theatres, exhibitions etc...), amazing bars and restaurants, amazing shopping places ranging from oriental to US style malls, moutains and beaches close by etc...

I went to Istanbul for four days in early July, and I can honestly say that it is one of if not my favorite european city. I absolutely loved it, Turks are such kind and hospitable people. I've been lucky to travel around the world and this city left a big impression on me. Like the an earlier posted noted, the restaurants, bars and general public spaces in the downtown area are wonderful. The temperature imho is just right, Summers are warm but with the effect of the Bosphorus it's not unbearable, 30 degrees on most days. Oh and did I mention the chicks are hot. The only drawback for me is the language, Turkish seems like a very difficult language to grasp and to live there I'd think you'd need to know Turkish.

I'd love to go there someday too, very nice city.
Too bad that's it's just a citytrip, I don't think you can really go to the beaches in Istanbul right?
Nevertheless, when I'm somewhat older I'll go there.

cheers

In another forum a Turk accidently revealed to me:

if a tork fights with a tourist he/she judged in state security courts instead of regular court

I always wondered how a fanatic muslim country like Turkey could receive so many tourists. Obviously the Turkish state knows that tourists need special protection or else they could be preyed upon like the hapless citiziens of Turkey(that are non-muslim).

People like karabasan1974 need warnings whenever they make a post like the above which is essentially an irrelevant pic spam bomb. This is not innocent behavior, especially when they massively pic spam in the middle of threads.

Quote:"Council of Europe"

... in 1960, the situation worsened dramatically for the islanders (of Imvros, Turkish name of island is Gökçeada). In 1964 ... article 14 of law No 1151 was put in force again by virtue of law 502/1964 and the Greek-language schools were closed. Most of the viable agricultural lands were expropriated, for the construction of an airport and a military base, the establishment of an “open prison” (agricultural prison) on the southwest coast of Gökçeada (Imbros) in 1965, and for the establishment of a state-owned agricultural production enterprise (TIGEM) in 1966. According to testimonies collected by a Turkish researcher5, and by some of the islanders themselves whom I met during my on-site visit, the inmates of the “open prison” committed many criminal acts against the (then still mostly ethnic Greek) inhabitants to the point of driving many to emigration, whilst the authorities did not intervene effectively.
...

Quote:"The Society of Imvrians"
http://www.imvrosisland.org/1990.asp
translation from the Greek:

...
In 1988, Turkey lifted its ban on entry arrangements in force for Imvros and Tenedos, which had been declared "military areas". Until then, all non-Turkish nationals had to obtain special permission from the Prefecture of Çanakkale to visit. Thus, in 1989 began a cautious, but increasingly widespread re-attendance of Imvrians to visit their former island for summer vacations. The picture that followed was disappointing: houses half-demolished from leaving, damaged property, military environment, Turkish settlers of low educational and living standards, which never failed to express the insular environment, severe damage from akrites and often unnecessary interventions in the natural environment of the island. ...

Thus even while Turkey sought to get rid of Greek Imvrians in the most digusting manner possible, the Turkish government has no problem to encourage these same Greeks who now live mostly in Greece to re-visit Turkey as tourists which they do regularly according the website of Imvrian Society and infact they are they are mainstay on that island(now inhabited by mostly Turks after the compelled and forced immigration).

No doubt Greek Imvrians are much safer visiting a muslim country like Turkey now as tourists with the protection of the Greek embassy and the fact that Turks who screw around with tourists face internal Turkish state security courts compared to the kind of problems they faced at various periods when they were actual Turkish citiziens.

This explains why a fanatic country like Turkey which treats non-muslim minorities so horribly is able to receive so many tourists. There is a double standard in Turkey between how internal minorities are treated who are citiziens and owed something by Turkey; and how well comparatively tourists are treated, who are just a foreign income source.

Nah, we're not that friendly. We just like Brazilians a lot.

---

LatinAmerica, China, and Africa. From all these continents, under whose eyes Europe today raises up her tower of opulence, there has flowed out for centuries toward that same Europe diamonds and oil, silk and cotton, wood and exotic products. Europe is literally the creation of the Third World. The wealth which smothers her is that which was stolen from the underdeveloped peoples. The ports of Holland, the docks of Bordeaux and Liverpool were specialized in the Negro slave trade, and owe their renown to millions of deported slaves. So when we hear the head of a European state declare with his hand on his heart that he must come to the aid of the poor underdeveloped peoples, we do not tremble with gratitude. Quite the contrary; we say to ourselves: "It's a just reparation which will be paid to us."
