Car sales down in western Europe.

European car sales hit the skids

Car makers have temporarily closed factories to deal with falling demand
Car sales in Western Europe fell by 15.5% year-on-year in October and sales will remain weak, J.D. Power Automotive, a leading forecaster, said.

The fall in demand has been blamed on difficult economic conditions, expensive financing and reduced consumer confidence.

Sales will fall 10-11% in 2009, with the situation "at least as bad as during the recession in the 1990s".

Sales in Germany, France and UK have accelerated their decline lately.

"A sharp economic slowdown appears inevitable and the most important question which remains to be answered is how deep and long this event will be," J.D. Power said.

After a 23% fall in October, the UK market is seen as particularly vulnerable, with J.D Power predicting a "significant double-digit decline in 2009".

In Spain and Italy, where new car registrations have already fallen dramatically, "sales appear to be closing in on a more stable, but much reduced level".

J.D Power also warns that plans to introduce government-sponsored incentive schemes aimed at boosting sales will only have a ''limited impact" in the current economic climate.

This is horrible news.

I just hope this is a routine recession (i.e. part of cyclical economic boom and busts) rather than something fundamentally more, considering the issue of oil running out.

Oil is far from running out. Anyway, my father must buy a new car in a few months, he'll get it for "cheap". Not that cars are cheap. I don't believe one second that cars are more expensive than they were 30 years ago. It's not the 10$ sensors added here and there that can make the price that much higher. Not to mention that cars are now manufactured in 3rd world countries which of course have lower wages.

How many more years/decades of oil do you think we have left?

What about alternative sources of energy e.g electric cars?

I am not an expert on this but in addition to petrol-based energy and car fuel, plastic is made from petrol. I have not heard of an alternative for plastic, though as I said I am not an expert.

''Oil is far from running out.''

Many industry insiders think the decline rate will far higher than Cheney anticipated in 1999. Andrew Gould, CEO of the giant oil services firm Schlumberger, for instance, recently stated that "An accurate average decline rate of 8% is not an unreasonable assumption." Source Some industry analysts are anticipating decline rates as high as 13% per year. Source A 13% yearly decline rate would cause gobal production to drop by 75% in less than 11 years.

If a 5% drop in production caused prices to triple in the 1970s, what do you think a 50% or 75% drop is going to do?

Estimates coming out of the oil industry indicate that this drop in production has already begun. Source The consequences of this are almost unimaginable. As we slide down the downslope slope of the global oil production curve, we may find ourselves slipping into something best described as a "post industrial stone age." Source
Some people believe that no new refineries have been built due to the efforts of environmentalists. This belief is silly when one considers how much money and political influence the oil industry has compared to the environmental movement. Do you really think Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush were going to let a bunch of pesky environmentalists get in the way of oil refineries being built if the oil companies had really wanted to build them?

This is serious, find out more here:

cars are NOT made in third world countries shockingly enough because of the way certain treaties are worded cars in the US are made primarily in the US and this includes all the Japanese branded cars which are also primarily made in the US.

Some parts are made in Mexico & Canada. Very little comes from China.

In Europe most of the cars are made in Germany and France with some parts now made in Russia.

Before Russia they are made in Czech Republic and Romania. Don't put Russia on the same line with France or Germany.

And by the way, where you let Italy or Spain who both make more cars than Russia? Or what about Sweden? Wake up, dude.
