Belgian, a summary:
3 "regions" Flanders (6M inhabitants, Dutch speaking), Brussels (1M inhabitants, mainly French speaking but it's the historical capital of Flanders) and Wallony (3M inhabitants, French speaking).
The French speaking part of Belgium has as much political weight as the Dutch speaking part although they are a minority.
Flanders is VERY wealthy and pours billions of euros each year into Wallony.
Unemployment in Flanders is about 6%, in Wallony it's almost 15% !
The Flemish have had enough of this situation and don't want to pay for social programs in the south. Flanders has no problem with solidarity but just giving money to the lazy Walloons must halt.
The Flemish have been oppressed up til the '60 by the French speakers, for example, only in 1850, 30 years after the creation of Belgium, was Dutch recognised as an official language.
Flanders wants more autonomy, Wallony is scared of more autonomy and wants to keep the status quo.
