PARIS: The French news media were captivated by Hurricane Katrina, pointing out how the American government's faltering response brought into plain view the sad lot of black Americans. But this time the French, who have long criticized America's racism, could not overlook the parallels at home.

"It is true that the devastations of Katrina have cruelly shed light on the wounds of America, ghettoization, poverty, criminality, racial and territorial tensions," Le Figaro, the conservative daily, said in an editorial on Sept. 8. "In France, those in disagreement ran to pelt the 'American model' and the neoconservative president.

"But have they only looked at the state of their own country?"

Since April, 48 people, most of them children and all of them black, have died in fires in Paris.

In neighborhoods like Château Rouge, filled with the hundreds of thousands of nonwhite immigrants, some Arabs but mainly blacks, whom France has absorbed over the years from former colonies in Africa and the Caribbean, you feel the anger.

Cheickh, 28, got a university degree in France, but rather than working for someone else and running into what he and other young blacks say is France's low glass ceiling, he decided to start his own business. Six months ago he scraped together some money and opened a store.

"You see these fabrics? All from Africa, from my family," said Cheickh, who came from Mali, as he gestured toward colorful rolls of cloth.

France has long boasted of itself as the cradle of human rights and a bulwark against racism. It regularly denounced racism in the United States, and the road from Harlem to Paris was wide, inviting talented American blacks like the dancer Josephine Baker, musicians like Sidney Bechet, and writers like Richard Wright and James Baldwin.

But French insistence on the equality of man leaves them in a bind, their black critics say, perpetuating the fiction of a society without minorities.

The census in France does not list people by race. Hence, while blacks are thought to number about 1.5 million, of a total population of 59 million, no one really knows the exact number, which is estimated to be far higher.

There are virtually no black people in corporate France, and blacks have almost no political representation. No black person sits in the National Assembly or in a regional parliament, and only a smattering are found in city councils. The European Union finances programs for minorities but not in France, because of its refusal to recognize minorities.

So, today, blacks are not much on the French agenda. After the recent fires, the interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, proposed a program of affirmative action and a requirement that résumés conceal a person's ethnic or racial identity. But the rest of the cabinet, including the minister for equal opportunity, rejected the ideas, saying they offended the fundamental principle of equality.

"The French like to say, 'Blacks are a social problem, not racial,"' said Gaston Kelman, 52, a native of Cameroon who has written widely on France's black population. "So our institutions have no means to overcome it."

Until recently, virtually all blacks were on the lowest rung of the social ladder. Gradually, however, a younger generation is, like Cheickh, gaining education, starting businesses and gradually giving birth to a black middle class. They feel the discrimination they say is rampant in French society and are beginning to resist.

After graduating with a degree in economics and data processing, Claude Vuaki tried his hand at several jobs before deciding to start his own business. Together with his wife, Kibe, he opened a beauty salon in central Paris. But Vuaki's search for start-up capital was typical of the black experience. "They said right off, no loan, no money," said Vuaki, 52. He and his wife managed to gather some family savings and self-financed their shop.

Now the business is so successful that they plan a second shop, in Nice or Cannes. Kibe Vuaki travels regularly to the United States to study African-American hairstyles.

Still, Claude Vuaki remains one of a relatively small minority. Most blacks are employed in menial jobs, in construction or transportation.

What encourages people like him is that the glass ceiling often felt by young blacks who get an education is not discouraging them, but increasingly prompting them to strike out on their own.

"A lot of people I know want to create something of their own," he said, often in landscaping, construction and delivery services.

West Europe is setting a bad trend, already in alot of West European cities the immigrant population is almost approaching half the population. Mohammed is becoming a very popular names for "European babies".

The Africans living in France have just the right to stfu like any foreigner living in France.

Having been to Europe recently and seeing the various immigrant peoples in various cities around Europe, I can easily say that Africans don't do anything in the Southern countries and are nothing but a burden on society.

On the complete flip side, Turks in Munich were not exactly well assimilated (but were well integrated) but they were peaceful and many just kept to themselves. Even the Africans who were well educated or students were there for a reason.

Seems the majority of Europe is simply failing on a large scale to do anything with these immigrants. They bring them over just to be unemployed, I see no reason at all.

What matter is culture and the level of education.

And concerning culture, if we gave way to much to the political correctness, that's still much less than the English or Canadians for example.

If I want France to close it's door even more firmly to people of different culture than ours, it's not because of race, it's because we have a stock of half assimilated foreigners whose assimilation need to be completed before opening the doors again.

I've travelled all over France. Paris is chock full of blacks. I think most of them go to Charles DeGaulle Airport everyday so they can walk around aimlessly and take cuts in front of whites.

You get outside Paris and there are far less of them. Used to travel to Calais all the time and you almost never see any blacks up there.

In southern france there are lots of middle easterners and arabs. The kids hang around McDonalds restaurants during the daytime it seems.

Less than 8% of France globally (including Martinique and Guadaloupe who are majority black) and about 5% metro France. France is about 85% white in contrast to Greece which is a 90% brown country like Turkey or Jordan.

I have nothing against natural Frenchmen. Just all those recent immigrants who add a dark complexion to that nation.

It's not like my comments are unheard of, everyone in Europe has commented on the French national teams looking like they came out of Central Africa. You mean to tell me there are no caucasion french players that are qualified to be on the national teams? well, I say that in a group (neighborhood, classroom, workers) there are always people with higher virtues than others, more creative and generally more successful. The kind of success that doesn't come from obedience, but from all the individual's spirit, while others just copy, envy and find other "alternatives" to benefit.
And imagine a moron like that, going to, let's say New York for the first time, then a successful individual. The incompetent moron will look in stores at what to steal and how to benefit from that "riches". Totally ignoring the things that he never saw, then observing, probably just to take a picture with them, for show in his group, laughing like he build the city. Then will put some bad music, spit act "cool" and think how to assault everything.
The other guy will respect that order and think a way to benefit, but building and trying to be proud of it, if now, is just a newcomer.

Now, that are the differences, between people. They are basic and many are narrow minded incompetent individuals, while others are clearly superior. A group of individuals who are losers and incompetents have a reason for what they are like that and the reason, has nothing to do with the environment and other factors but it's true feelings and value. We can blame the environment all we can but we can't change the fact that today, entire nations are formed by incompetents in their big part or incompetents rule them, for some reason.

So, i believe that as soon as we change our ideas about society and groups and stop acting like we are all equal, we'll avoid or stop a new dark age. People are never equal and real values are few. We are not all Einsteins or his equals, for example.

Immigration has already proven to be an unmitigated disaster for Europe, and there are still no concrete reasons on why it should have been put into force in the first place.

Tolerance? Anti-racism? These are meaningless platitudes that have served only to intimidate those who argue against immigration and a multiracial Europe.

The sooner Europe wakes up and begins to realize that this immigration policy is not only unsustainable, but fatal, the better.

The French unfortunately seem to think that importing millions of these people to replenish their population will somehow make them a great power, and that the superiority of French culture should be enough to make them fully French and their future generations fully assimilated.

However, France - as well as the rest of Europe that pursues these disastrous policies - marches headlong towards destruction.

Another problem in all of this is also that many of these blacks are not African immigrants per se, but legally French citizens that come from French overseas possessions in the Pacific, South America, and the Carribean.

I'm not trying to make a remark against France because I like the country, but it's clearly setting itself up for a nasty fall.
