Turkey says Muslims oppose Dane's NATO candidacy

ANKARA, Turkey Turkey's prime minister has said there is strong opposition from Muslim nations to Denmark's prime minister becoming the next NATO chief and indicated the candidacy threatened to harm the alliance.
Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, seen as the likeliest candidate to replace Jaap de Hoop Scheffer as NATO secretary-general Aug. 1, infuriated some Muslims by speaking out in favor of freedom of speech during an uproar over Danish publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in 2006. He has also angered Turkey by opposing its membership in the European Union.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the Islamic-rooted ruling party, told NTV television in an interview late Friday that he had spoken to Fogh Rasmussen and informed him about opposition to his candidacy.
"We don't want NATO to be damaged and we don't think it is right that you as prime minister should be damaged in this process," Erdogan said he told Fogh Rasmussen. He did not say when the conversation took place.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul had said Friday that Ankara had nothing against Fogh Rasmussen and described him as "one of the most successful prime ministers" in Europe.
Turkish officials however, said there was no contradiction in the two leaders' stances.
A spokesman for the president said Gul's statement was not an endorsement of Fogh Rasmussen's candidacy. He said Gul was merely trying to explain "that Turkey does not have any prejudices against anyone."
An aide to Erdogan said no decision had yet been made and Turkey was still assessing who should head NATO. Both men spoke on condition of anonymity because of rules that bar civil servants from making press statements without prior authorization.
Erdogan has lately become more vocal in publicly criticizing countries that he sees offending or attacking Muslims. His public scolding of Israeli President Shimon Peres at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, over the killings of civilians in Gaza made him a hero in the broader Muslim world.
"There has been a serious reaction in countries with Muslim populations over the cartoons crisis. Now, these countries are calling us and saying 'no way,'" Erdogan said to explain the pressure he is under from Muslim countries to try to block Fogh Rasmussen's candidacy.
Turkey also strongly criticized Fogh Rasmussen during the cartoons crisis.
Asked whether his words should be read as a veto threat, Erdogan said he has told Fogh Rasmussen that "as a party leader, I cannot contradict the principles of my party. You can imagine what it would mean."
Turkey has the right to a veto, but decisions on the next NATO secretary-general are usually taken by consensus. It would be difficult for Turkey to oppose Fogh Rasmussen if the 25 other member states back him.
Erdogan also criticized Fogh Rasmussen for his unwillingness to stop broadcasts by a Kurdish satellite television station, Roj TV, which Turkey accuses of being a propaganda machine for Turkey's Kurdish rebels.
Associated Press Writer Suzan Fraser in Ankara contributed to this report.
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

"Bringing danish to Nato command will be insulting to the afghan people since there is a big dislike to them from cartoon incident."
If they see Danish leadership of NATO as their biggest problem (as opposed to bombings, shootings, poor education, crappy infrastructure etc.) they truely are a fuked up people. A little pragmatism wouldn't go astray now would it?

Clever step by erdo. He will use this "muslim world dont like danes" excuse to oppose Rasmussens candidacy.

Spot on. Turkey has a personal problem with Denmark concerning their stubbornness to fight kurdish terrorism. So Turkey is using every card on the table.
Turkey which allowed Israel to train in Turkish airspace for the Gaza operations does not care about Muslims or Islam.

"Most Danes don't like Muslims."
Don't most European countries dislike Muslims in Europe? I can't count the number of Brits that I have met here in Canada who moved due to the piss poor immigration policy of their own country (not that Canada's is any better).

Diplomacy at its best.
Xstanbul is right..It is nothing to do with Muslim world..Denmark has failed to solve the terrorist TV issue. Denmark is one the financial hub for kurdish terrosist and Turkey has been asking Denmark for corporation...
Denmark is avery peacefull nation that far far from the world conflicts. Rasmussen is not the best choice....
Denmark leads the way for animal bordellos in Scandinavia
"Scandinavians with a penchant for sex with animals can find plenty of options right in their own backyard. There are no prohibitions on this sexual inclination in Denmark or Norway, though the latter is considering new legislation to ban it.
According to current laws, as long as the animals are not suffering, the government has no problem with bestiality. Danish Internet sites openly advertise sex with animals without any fear of repercussion from authorities. This has created something of a gray area as far as the animal bordellos are concerned, according to Torunn Knævelsrud, the Norwegian Food Safety Authorityâs section chief for animal control.
It could be that the animals dont really care, Knævelsrud said. But I think it is in the nature of the case that animals will often be victims of injury, stress or suffering in connection with sexual acts with humans. Either that they are held fast, or frightened, or suffer pain or physical injury.â
The animal owners boast that their animals have plenty of experience, and even enjoy the sex. The cost for having sex with an animal runs from US$85-170. But the Norwegian Animal Welfare Alliance is trying to amend existing laws to make this illegal. According to the Danish bordello owners, most of the customers are German, Norwegian, Dutch or
Swedish."

Turkish diplomacy at it best. its a win win situation well done Erdogan and Gül.
Ankara wins, Eu wins, Nato wins, Muslim world wins
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
To be honest, Turkey didn't win anything, because we approved Rasmussen's bid without receiving anything tangible, other than the verbal "guarantee" of Obama. Anyone knows a bit of diplomacy, would know that verbal promises are nothing significant.
NATO also didn't win anything, because it has got the wrong man for the job. Rasmussen is literally hated throughout the Muslim world, is now charge of NATO's Afghanistan War.. lol
The EU also didn't win anything, because they have only alienated Turkey and made the bilateral relations even worse. The arrogant stance by the EU was even more disturbing than our PM's horse bargain.
So it was rather a lose-lose situation to be honest..

EU-TURKEY: NO CONFIRMATION OF NATO-ADHESION FROM BRUSSELS
(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, APRIL 6 - In exchange for the go ahead to the appointment of the Danish PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen as Secretary General of NATO, Turkey has allegedly been promised the acceleration of the two chapters which are currently being negotiated for the EU adhesion process. The news, reported today by the International Herald Tribune, was not confirmed by the EU Commission. According to diplomatic sources at the NATO summit which on Saturday saw the appointment of Rasmussen with the consensus of Turkey, which had previously opposed the appointment, Ankara had received confirmation of six posts within the Alliance, the most important being the post of deputy to the Vice Secretary General, which was carried out today by Italy. Other sources quoted by the Herald Tribune added that an unblocking of two EU adhesion chapters were amongst the elements which led to the agreement. "The European Union and NATO are two very distinct organisations and there is no connection between the EU adhesion process and NATO agreements," Christiane Hohmann stated, not confirming the news. Speaking from Helsinki last Saturday, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn commented unfavourably on Turkey's veto of Rasmussen, which was motivated by the Danish PM's failure to censor anti-Islamic cartoon strips. Rehn said that the motivation did not bode well for Turkey's adhesion. "This does not bring anything good on a European front, given that the freedom of expression is one of the Union's fundamental values, at a time when Turkey is hoping to join the EU", Rehn said. (ANSAmed).
