What would be a great team name for a second Toronto NHL franchise? This may include the corridor from Toronto through those of us here in London, and right down to Windsor, and may also form part or all of the Golden Horseshoe and Niagara Region!

So let's see your creative flair, your originality and creativety! I'll even throw in a $50 dinner for two at East Side Mario's for the most original name! We'll gather up the ten most popular names over the next few weeks and then put those names into a poll which our forums participants will vote on, the winner will be determined prior to Christmas and will have a dinner for two compliments of "The Cage" that they can enjoy over the holidays, how's that sound everyone?

So put on your thinking caps and start submitting your votes by replying to this thread! Thanks everybody! Have fun with this!

My first entry will be ...... The GTA Renegades! Imagine the artwork that would work with that one! It's got to be better than the "Leaves" (what the hell is that anyway? A Blue Maple Leaf? And leaves get soggy and lose their life in the fall ..... hmmmm ...... maybe they were onto something afterall huh? (teehee)

Tony, how's about the Toronto Beaver Pelts? Pelts are usually soft and warm and adored by both men and women. The Pelts would play out of the new Beaver Dam Arena at Downsview across from California Sandwich. The Arena would be in the shape of a Beaver Tail with two big teeth at the front. Tickets would be 1/2price vs Leafs tickets and every season ticket holder would recieve a beaver pelt at the door.

Ah, the Toronto Huskies -----------------------------

No score for this post
October 23 2008, 8:10 AM

A name from the past.

When I was a youngster, Toronto had an NBA team and it was called the Toronto Huskies. I believe it was around 1948/49/50 somewhere in there. The Huskies played at MLG for, I think, 2 seasons and then folded. When the Raptors started, they considered reviving the Husky name, however on search, they ran into so many products and teams with the name Husky (eg: Husky Oil) in Canada and the US that they chose not to run through the possible legal implications and opted out of using the name Husky.

As I recall the Huskies had a pretty good NBA team, I guess "Hogtown" wasn't ready for basketball at the time. Now there's some trivia, anyone know why Toronto was called "Hogtown"?.

I think "Toronto Huskies" would be a great name for a 2nd NHL team in the Toronto area.

I knew of the '46-47 Toronto Huskies team.
The inaugural NBA game was played at Maple Leaf Gardens on November 1, 1946.
The New York Knickerbockers defeated Toronto Huskies 68-66.

The Huskies went on to a 22-38 record and did not make the playoffs.
They finished in a fifth place tie with the Boston Celtics.

Toronto = Hogtown
It is a reference to the livestock that was processed in Toronto.

I know you are not old enough to remember all that, so "Kudos" to you for looking it up.

Since we are momentarily on Basketball, here's another piece of trivia for you.

Have you ever wondered why the LA Lakers are called the Lakers? when there is no lake of any consequence around LA.

The Lakers started in Detroit in 1946/47 and were known as the Detroit Gems. In 1947/48 they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Minnesota's state motto is "The Land of 10,000 Lakes", so the new team became known as the Minneapolis Lakers. When the team moved to LA in the early 70's, they chose to retain the name "Lakers".

I knew before I ever even heard of the interenet ...

The Lakers came from Minnesota, there are a few lakes there. lol
I have always been a sports fan.

True I am not old enough to know first hand, but Toronto's "Hogtown" nickname is fairly well known. I am more then old enough to remember the Maple Leaf Foods plant at ST.Clair and Weston RD/Keele St.
Besides, I was raise by my parents in this city.

I knew that the Raps were not the first NBA team in Toronto and that the team was called the Huskies and that the first NBA game was played here.

The interenet helped today in finding the year the Huskies played and the exact date of the game I mentioned.

Very good Wex.

One little mistake, the food processing plant at Weston Rd & St Clair Ave/Keele St. was owned by Canada Packers Inc. from 1927 to 1991. In 1991 Canada Packers Inc and Maple Leaf Mills Limited merged to form the present day Maple Leaf Foods Inc.

The huge Ontario Stock Yards were located on the south side of St Clair Ave. The unsuspecting animals were led accross St Clair each day to the slaughter house at Canada Packers. When the wind was blowing from the North/West you could smell the lovely aroma as far south as Bloor Street. Aaahhh, those were the days, especially when it was 95 degrees in the summer months.

Canada Packers and the Ontario Stockyards used to sponsor hockey teams in the old Ravina Gardens Senior League, back when Senior hockey was pretty close to AHL and NHL caliber. In fact Conn Smythe of the Leafs used to let the Ravina Senior League play their final playoff series at Maple Leaf Gardens. Many players from the league eventually found their way to the AHL and the NHL.

Don't you just love trivia!

Drunkest fan gets to drive Zamboni.

KINGSVILLE — Ice and impaired charges often go together — but not like this.

An Essex County woman found out you don’t have to be driving on a road to be charged with impaired. About 9:40 p.m. Thursday, an off-duty OPP sergeant was approached at the Kingsville arena by concerned citizens who reported that the Zamboni was hitting the boards, missing sections of the ice and being driven erratically. At one point, witnesses reported that the driver stopped on the ice and was slumped over the wheel.

After driving off the surface, the officer arrested the woman, who was taken to the local OPP station. Police say she was not cooperative. OPP say a mickey of vodka was found with the driver.

A 34-year-old Kingsville woman was charged with impaired driving and over-80.

She’s scheduled to appear in a Windsor court in December

Toronto Islanders.

The New York Islanders were just listed among the Top 10 Sports Franchises Most Likely To Move.

Toronto has Islands. Toronto likes a winner. Islanders have won 4 Cups.

They'll move if Charles Wang can't get a new rink built and they're valued at $149 million.

I'm not sure if Thunder would work just because of Tampa Bay being the Lightning. I have some suggestions:

1)Toronto Toros (going back to the WHA days)
2)Toronto Thunderbirds
3)Toronto Terror
4)Toronto Trailblazers
5)Toronto Hornets
6)Toronto Outlaws

If the team was based out of Hamilton I would say the Hamilton Tigers (history) or if it was Kitchener-Waterloo I would say the Siskins.

The Trillium, being Ontario's provincial flower, what could be more appropriate?

The whole thing with team names now adays is that they have to be marketable to the younger audience and I just don't see trilliums appealing to the younger, or older male crowd, as that is the majority of the market.

You don't like Trilliums, then how about

"The Toronto Totems"

Toronto is an Indian name that means "meeting place" and "Totems" is obviously very Indian.

I believe there is also a "Seattle Totems" hockey team out west, but then there are a lot of teams named Canadians, Rangers etc.

"In keeping with the tradition started by the Leafs, should that name be the Toronto Mooses."

Everyone knows the proper pluralization of Moose is Meese! happy.gif

I'm thinking something along a Fort York theme.

Redcoats
Riflemen
Dragoons
Voltigeurs
Cavalry

I see that SMC did indeed mention "Toronto Oak Leafs" first, of course he should get credit. I noticed that someone else also mentioned "Northmen" as well.

I did not intend to take any name already used.

the Toronto BIG SMOKE. there have been thoughts / threads about various pro teams that don't have an 's' on the end. miami heat, utah jazz, ??? many others, i know we'll get help here.

in tony's $50 dinner deal there were some others as well as the BIG SMOKE without an 's' but i like mine. Toronto is known as the Big Smoke to some, T dot to others, and other assorted. PICK ME -- PICK ME -- PICK ME ................

i agree with the dog that this thread has sunk to the ridiculous ........ PICK ME and get it over with ........ $50 bucks would do me and my 8 hungry kids about 1/2 that is required at mickey d's .....

How bout... the Toronto Great White North

The Toronto Mackinaws (and their team colours can be plaid! now all we have to do is lure Joe away from the Leafs...)

Oooh ooh! I got it... The Dukes of York
(reminiscent of the "mighty ducks of anaheim" or Stouffville's proper name, "the spirit of stouffville")
BAM if that's not a winner right there, I don't know what is.

Either that or the Yorkshire Puddings would be ok, too.

Bahaha Yorkshire Terriers!! the players could all wear pink bows. ooh cute!

Toronto Gardiners

did someone already say The Hogtown Hogs?

The Cabbagetown Carnies? (I don't even WANT to know what those uni's would turn out looking like)

I need to get back to work.

*I can see your five hole*

You have "WON" a $50 Gift Certificate at East Side Mario's for submitting the winning entry here "In The Cage"! Please e-mail me at either:

So that I can courier your prize tomorrow so that you receive it before Christmas! Thanks to everyone who participated, or as in Wexdogs' case whined, grovelled, complained and was just downright negative throughout the contest.

Hey Tony, great contest it was a lot of fun and certainly was enjoyed by me and I'm sure many more, no matter was the "Cur" says.

Congrats to Wayne, even though I don't think anyone will know where Upper Canada is, but I did like the "Rebels" as in "Toronto Rebels".

Tony, placing 2 names in the 5 finalists should be worth a hot dog and a coffee don't you think? LOL
