In case you missed this week's COACHES CORNER,I hope I have added the following link properly. Grapes is emotional - the music is MAPLE LEAF FOREVER:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmPnaA1voNA

In addition I'd like to make you aware of another hero of our era. You may know of or at least hopefully heard of Vera LYNN ,dubbed THE ANGEL OF THE TRENCHES in WWii. She was a hero to our soldiers during the war and still is for our veterans and others.
Her songs, "We'll Meet Again", "White Cliffs of Dover"...etc etc are famous - Google her if you don't know the story.
In 2005 , an open air concert was held in Trafalgar Square to commemorate the 50th anniversary of VE Day. Vera LYNN was 88 at the time and barely able to speak. She introduced the "New Vera" the "New Dame of The Forces", Katherine Jenkins, a Welsh/Irish singer who has accepted the mantel from Dame Vera.
Katherine Jenkins has been into Iraq several times already , to meet and perform for the troops. She was also present there for the repatriation ceremony of one of our own. I have added a link below to the one of the songs she performed at the VE Ceremony. Her voice is more operatic than Vera's (i.e. harder to make out the words at times) so I've inluded the lyrics below. Find her on youtube & even if you don't like her music or disagree with the politics of what she's doing its worth watching her without sound - she's absolutely beautiful.
In one of her performances she dedicated a song to our elite JTF2 Unit which had just completed a special operation.
I apologize in advance for takin' you off hockey for a bit. To me she is a modern day hero. (The following link is over seven minutes long but its the full length version with the precision drums of THE ROYAL MARINES:)

You never lived to see
What you gave to me
One shining dream of hope and love
Life and liberty
With a host of brave unknown soldiers
For your company, you will live forever
Here in our memory
In fields of sacrifice
Heroes paid the price
Young men who died for old men's wars
Gone to paradise
We are all one great band of brothers
And one day you'll see we can live together
When all the world is free
I wish you'd lived to see
All you gave to me
Your shining dream of hope and love
Life and liberty
We are all one great band of brothers
And one day you'll see we can live together
When all the world is free

Just so you know, you can go direct to the source for "Coach's Corners" on CBC Hockey Night In Canada.

Click the link below, then scroll down just a little bit, you see an area called "Features". You will see a picture of Don Cherry and under the pic it reads " WATCH NOW Coach's Corner". Click the picture and the most recent Coach's Corner will play. You also have the option of going back to see past Coach's Corner segments.

Although many of us think about the sacrifices that others have made on behalf of us on a daily basis, I hope that each of us takes a few moments throughout the day to reflect on that unselfishness! My Grandad fought in World War II and when he passed away in 1977 (I was 15 years old at the time), my mom asked if there was anything of sentimental value that I would like to keep of his as a cherished memory of him.

I requested his war medallions from WW II which are proudly displayed at home! Although I'm out of town working and can't hold those cherished momentos on this day, I certainly won't forget the sacrifices that he and his comrades made in order for us to live free today!

I LOVE YOU GRANDAD, AND THANKYOU!

Your cell phone is in your pocket.
He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.

You talk trash about your 'buddies' that aren't with you.
He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.

You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.
He patrols the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.

You complain about how hot it is
He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow.

You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.
He doesn't get to eat today.

Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes.
He wears the same things for weeks, but makes sure his weapons are clean.

You go to the mall and get your hair redone.
He doesn't have time to brush his teeth today.

You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over.
He's told he will be held over an extra 2 months.

You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.
He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home.

You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday.
He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume.

You roll your eyes as a baby cries.
He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they'll ever meet.

You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything.
He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own people and remembers why he is fighting.

You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of men like him.
He hears the gunfire, bombs and screams of the wounded.

You see only what the media wants you to see.
He sees the broken bodies lying around him.

You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't.
He does exactly what he is told even if it puts his life in danger.

You stay at home and watch TV.
He takes whatever time he is given to call, write home, sleep, and eat.

You crawl into your soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable.
He tries to sleep but gets woken by mortars and helicopters all night long.

REMEMBER our Troops, and do not forget them LATER
Lest we forget -
