I love reading the chatter about sale of teams to parents etc.....When everyone starts to realize that Jr A teams just cant be financial stable the way things operate, it's only BECAUSE of the parents that teams continue to operate....last I heard more than 80% of the league are operated by parents or someone with family involvment...think about it who else wants to lose big $$$$ every year for the "enjoyment" of hockey...maybe eveyone should be thanking new owner groups for keeping Jr A hockey alive and well....

So themanwithnoplan, I agree with you completely that these Rich parents get involved for themenwithaplan, they ARE keeping Jr. A hockey "ALIVE but NOT WELL"
-one thing is for sure, it does become their Bat & their Ball and they get to do whatever they like with it......
-our league though is to busy making rules changing divisions/conferences, reducing 20 year olds increasing 16 year olds, letting teams fold in the middle of the season etc. etc.
-who cares about the kids well being, on one hand they spend a year coming up with a process to develope players and then a bunch of parents own teams who's kids MAY not be able to make and a bunch of other kids don't get developed
-I'm real good with no Parents owning any part of teams and if that reduces the numbers of teams so be it,
-no offence intended to the owners who's have kids that legitametly make teams
Just my thoughts,

I would have to agree on both of your comments, yes if a parent has the big bucks and wants to have a team for their son to play for in Junior go for it,and then there is the other side of the money story...is this son worth playing Junior, destroying the chances of a player that deserves to be in junior hockey.
We have seen and complained about this topic for years now,the only way this can be resolved, is the OHA has to stop anyone from buying clubs with the intent of an owners son having a spot off the bat, they the OHA has to do homework on the person or persons buying clubs no matter if it is Jr.A/B/C/or even D.
look at club rosters in any league and you will find Owners/Coaches/Sponcers sons names on these rosters, and it is a shame to see this when 98% of them do not deserve to be on those rosters!!
If i had won a 649 DRAW....My kid would of had a better chance making the OHL or even the NHL with limited skills!!

You are a smart cookie man,i agree also with you 100%,we have this problem with a team in the EAST division, and killed the playoff drive for other players last season when they were on a 3-1 series upset over Bowmanville and meeting Kingston Vees!
That was brutal for all in the next round, to throw everything those players worked for out the window to please an Owner and his kid!

The day when a team has to fold is lamented by their fans. But it really only matters if there was ENOUGH fans to support the team, otherwise it is time to go.
I can assure you that the Battalion and the former Ice Dogs initial revenue projections far outweighed the reality in their opening seasons. At least the "O" found a way to reduce the number of teams in the GTA (dogs to st kitts - st mikes to miss). I don't think that there is anywhere left to put a Jr A team in Ontario that would "make money" under the current system, even with the new Conference Callaboogie.
Team reduction (anyway you can) is the only long term solution.
Unfortunately the supply of Hockey Daddie$ is unlimited.

Maybe you should be on the Board of Directors with the O.H.A Spiritfan08,then things would be good for players at the Jr calibre level and not others with Dads money that should not even be at this level ever!

Good luck Huntsville fans, because if this is the case to have an Owner buy a team for his son,it will put you all back 3 years after an amazing season last year WOW!

I find it funny how everyone is so quick to damn an owner even before he has had a chance to act. Have so many forgotten who owns the Kingston Voyageurs? Just because an owner has a son who makes the team it does not mean it is the end of the world. We have seen a bunch of successes where kids parents have been owners, coaches and GM's and because of that there is no way to be able to restrict a parent from buying a club. It would be possible to shut it down by proving negligence through operation, but that would still be a tough thing to prove. Just because a teams bad does not mean that the problem rests on the fact a son of the owner plays on a team.

Really, Matty is right on the money. Besides, there is NO team I have ever seen that wins or loses solely based on the play of one player, even if that player IS the son of the owner.

How many teams really are we talking about which have parent owners/coaches/GM etc.
Let's start a list of teams with parent involment
Huntsville-no parents, YET
Couch-Micks & Salmon, Micks & older Salmon real good players, don't think youmger Salmon would be on that good team without dad
Port Hope/Trenton: Finney probably could be a backup goalie somewhere but not a number 1.

The Muskies are part-owned by Aaron Keaney's dad. But it has worked very well. Dad Mike kept out of the team's affairs and Aaron won his place on merit. Now Aaron is off to NCAA, Mike will likely step up and do more. They are a shining example of how parent-owners can work really well.

manwithnoplan better search the top of your head a little more. Don't think Vaughan, Villanova, North York, St. Mikes are part of that group. Is Newmarket in that group anymore?
But Toronto, Hamilton, I think Burlington would be.
